Well, the other night I was flying over a base in my G10, hovering above a bunch of LTARs who were all intent on shooting me down, when I noticed something a bit odd. The icon range indicated I was 1.5K away from this Osti on the ground when my altimiter said I was at 7K and the base was at 3K. Being that I was 4k off of the field, how is that guy only 1.5K away from me? I was almost directly over the top of him.
Good part was that they didn't manage to kill me, allbeit not from the lack of trying. A man could walk 10 miles on those tracer rounds that they put in the air. :D

he was in the 1.5k - 2k icon range. 1500 - 2000 yards not feet.
icons are in yards.
that means he was 4,500 - 6,000 feet away from you.
altimiter is in feet. if you are 3k alt you are 3000 feet.
since you were 7000 feet, and the base was 3000 feet he was 4000 feet away from you.
thats something alot of people forget about. especially in planes. getting hit from 1k by .50 cals is being shot from 3000 feet away.
thats .6 of a mile almost

:lol heheheheheh
1.5K tards * 3feet = 4.5K feet. It only took me 2 years to figure that one out.
The question I have is: You had LTARs 1.5K away and you did not die?

Howie ya big cow :D
4,000 feet = 1.3 yards
so you were only about 200 yards from being directly overhead.
thats an easy shot for any LTAR worth his name :rofl

Really? 4000 feet = 1.3 yards eh? I know whose kills I'm stealing tonight! :D
73, thank you for the explanation, I suppose I never thought of it that way. Its all coming together now... =)
Dedalos - Yeah I don't know... it wasn't for the lack of shooting at me thats for sure. Looked like one of those scenes you saw on CNN the first time we had an air strike in iraq. I went off looking for another fight because the base was capped, but it was still a good time overall =)

You are losing it Howi. No base is capped when the LTARs are there :D

Sorry Howi :( , didn't mean to let ya down. Next time we'll make it a point NOT to miss. :lol
We all the time get called NICE things when shooting down someone that just can't understand how the heck we were able to reach out and touch them, that they were too far away for an Osti to shoot them down. Many make the same miscalculation (he he). On the other hand, for us, that's Osti 101 :)

Dedalos - When that VH popped, it looked like someone flipped on the lights and the roaches all ran out. I swear they had their fingers on the spawn button waiting for it to pop =)
LTARokit - Its alright, don't feel that you have to shoot me down every chance you get =) I don't normally bring bombs with me, but if I had some I would have stuck around and played a bit. I'm not going to start straffing LTARs in my G10, especially when you are there in force. You guys are pretty good though, I was over 2k away one time, and I was watching the tracers get closer and closer. Actually had to roll a little bit in order to throw the guy off. :)
