Title: Boroda, your take on the violation of finn airspace?
Post by: Fishu on May 24, 2005, 02:18:46 PM
I'm curious to hear your take on the violation of the finnish airspace by russian military aircrafts

PM Vanhanen sees airspace violations as bilateral issue between Finland and Russia (http://www.helsinginsanomat.fi/english/article/1101979630776)

Quote
On Saturday, the European Commission gave its support to Finland's demand that Russia must immediately stop violating Finnish airspace.
Last week it was revealed that Russian jets flying over the Gulf of Finland had strayed into Finnish airspace 20 times in the past year.
Finland sent a diplomatic note over the repeated encroachments to Russia about four weeks ago. There has been no response

The violations of Finnish airspace have taken place along the south coast of Finland between Porvoo and Hanko. The aircraft in question were identified as Russian Air Force Tu-134 transport jets and Antonov battle command planes similar to the US AWACS radar planes. The planes were flying a route between St. Petersburg at the eastern end of the Gulf of Finland and the Russian Baltic enclave of Kaliningrad, when they deviated from the international air corridor over the Gulf of Finland.
The government is not calling the incursions a deliberate provocation. However, it has urged Russia to provide an explanation of what happened.

I belive that the twin engine design was also a major factor.

Not American unless born there?  Not sure who has ever said that on this BBS.  In fact I have read quite the opposite.

The backlash you have read about here does not relate to immigrants as such...but to ILLEGAL immigrants.  From what I have seen, if you want to enter the US legally, work hard and beome "an American" you are welcome with open arms.

Yes, that's probably how it must have happened. :)

11 violations of Finnish airspace have been reported since last October. The incidents involved flights between St. Petersburg and Kaliningrad, in which the Russian aircraft deviated from the (narrow) corridor of international airspace over the Gulf of Finland. Mostly the planes have been TU-134's and AN-26's, but also a Beriev A-50 Mainstay has been mentioned in the news. (An update, from today's news)

Last time I checked - there's nothing wrong with my ass.

I spent my childhood summers in Ino, where the Russian fort was until 1918, near Zelenogorsk (Terijoki). I think it explains who kicked who's ass.

Invading Finland is an interesting idea. Can you please explain to an asian barbarian on a shaggy mount - what for? I thought we have enough tundra... And enough oil in our own tundra. Is there any oil in Finland? If there is - I think they should be afraid of some other country, not Russia :D

You have all the rights to shoot down any unwanted planes in your airspace. I don't think it's a EU issue to protect your country.

IMHO it's a better idea for our military to make photo-recon of NATO airbases in "Baltic states". Maybe with some rusty An-24 falling down on NATO long-range radar station :D

The idea of building an air-defence SAM test-ground near Latvian border and lending it to Ukrainians is in the air now :D

Hmm, maintenance? I have heard that FAF technicians still remember MiG-21s with nostalgy, because F-18s are a nightmare in service.

Sure, the export MiG-29s have different avionics. AFAIK most of the VVS 29s are already upgraded to SMT version, that leaves only an airframe making it a completely different aircraft.

Me too! But I think we should continue in the "mega thread" if we want to go into that.

Anyway, the story I heard is that Finnish airspace deliberately planned and executed an attack on the Soviet aircraft. They were only defending themselves.

After a defensive action a peacefull Soviet lawnmover (mistakenly called a "plane" by bourgeous Finnish media) completely destroyed Finnish airspace, got out of ammunition and escaped to near-earth sattelite orbit.

:rofl

At least the major overhaul intervals are much longer on US planes than on the Russian planes. The MIG-21 in it's simplicity might have been more maintenance friendly on the field, and didn't reguire the same amount of training.

The planes were evaluated in 91-92, so the Mig-29 back then was more or less the "A" model. Sure the new versions are much better in the avionics department and they carry the  AA-12 "Alamo" missiles which weren't around back then.

Can you explain me the origin of this "Soviet Russia" stuff?... You know, cultural differences and all things...

His "In Soviet Russia...", or "In Soviet Union" form of jokes has become somewhat well known, with people making up their own.

In Soviet Russia, if computer program does not execute, they execute YOU!

Roses are Red
Violets are Blue
In Soviet Russia
Poem writes YOU!

Atleast it wasnt a civilian aircraft like in the case where the expert russian air defence workers for the people shot down a south korean civilian jumbo carrying 269 people. Im sure their relatives laughed too.

Othervice I would laugh if that "lawnmower" had carried like few hundred russians.

Wonder if $20 euros is a big enough bribe to the Russian Security Services for them to give Staga, an amusing tour of Lubyanka.

Well.. at least we have proof that Staga is a certified nutcase - he's boarding a Tupolev free willingly.

Friendly advice: Greet your family and make sure your last will is in a secure place.

I'll prefer good ol' Tupolevs to any new-fangled stuff.
