I doubt I would have been able to restrain myself as much as the driver did. If I saw that video and it was my kid, I would apologize to the driver and my kid would get a huge bruisin from his father. And everybit of luxury the kid has would be gone for months.
Anyone have any more information on this?

The sickness of our society.. in a 25 second video clip.
Disgusting. Unruly disrespectful kids. Arrogant out of control bus driver. Who to blame? TV? Parents? Teachers? Bus Company?
The driver was outta line.. he shoulda just had the kids hauled off by the deputies and submitted the tape to the school authorities. The moment he raised his hand to the disgusting little donutwoods they won. He lost.
Sad.. truly sad.

"Yes, Mr. Diablo? This is the school principal here."
"Yes, how are you?"
"Fine, thank you. We have a situation here regarding you son, Diablo, jr."
"OH, is he ok?"
"Well, he's here in my office now but he acted very badly on the bus to school. He refused to listen to the driver's orders to sit down in his seat and face forward."
"Ok."
"The driver asked repeatedly, asking him to comply with his wishes but it seems your son refused to listen to the driver."
"Oh, he did did he? What happened?"
"The driver became irrate and handled your son severly. I am afraid he won't be able to sit comfortably for a long time."
"Good. If this happens again you have my full permission to treat him as you see fit. Disrespect of authority is something I will not tolerate."
"Thank you Mr. Diablo, have a nice day."
"You too, sir."
This is what would have happened if I had been the little brat that back-talked the driver. My dad always told my principal to treat me in direct proportion to which I misbehaved. Very rare these days becuase "jr" never does anything bad, he's such a little angel.

When the got out of his seat and said *mofo*, I could see where the driver could interpret that as an aggressive move if not a direct attack... I think a defensive response like that would not be unexpected. Then the kid started fighting back and things escalated...

He messed that little bastard up!

Same in my day Diablo.. but I gotta tell yah I'd have a real hard time keepin my cool if somebody handed me film of my kid bein beat on by a bus driver. Thats MY job... not a responsibility I'll gladly hand over to anybody else.
I expect the school authorities and their agents to act rationally when they got my kid.. violence on my kid administered without my direct consent? Nope.
On the other hand, if that was my kid, after I'd finished informing the administration in detail how furious I was for the violence upon my child, I would soundly beat the crap outta my kid..
It's because these lil brats have gotten away with defiance and foul mouthed abuse of their administrators without any fear of repercussions from home that they pull it to begin with.
Summary.. the driver should be fired. The kid needed his bellybutton whipped 6 years earlier at the first sign of disrespect to a school agent or administrator.. by his parents. Now the lil bastard is what 13, 14? With a 'tude? Too late fer him I suspect; but an bellybutton whippin is still warranted.
-
I like when the kid tells the bus driver to watch his mouth.
-
as a parent I'd be mortified. The bus drivers only mistake is that he "appears" to make the first move. Verbal threats from a teenager really arnent a reason to put your hands on them.
IMHO an arm bar would have been better than grabbing him by the neck. It appears less aggressive and more "restraining"
-
Hang, I agree with ya but I can't agree with keeping the admin's hands tied when it comes to discipline. It's natural to get angry when someone else disciplines your kid but, think about it, you aren't there. Theses kids, like it or not, were looking to provoke the driver. If you provoke a lion, what do you get? These kids are lucky that they didn't ride on my bus. We had this driver that scared the crap outta us. Just by looking at us we would STFU very quickly. These kids nowadays don't care, they know they can hide behine rules, "Go ahead and hit me! You'd go to jail!!!" or "My single mother of 5 with 5 different daddies will sue your ass!!!" The dismissal of chorporeal *edit-damn, how do you spell that?* punishment has done nothing but make brats of most of the kids now.

It's a tuff one.. but the first ball was dropped by the parents.
"Daddy, the bus driver was a salamander, he cursed at me!"
My dad woulda absolutely wigged out at that crap, his answer woulda been "So what did YOU do to get him mad at you?. How many times have I told you to shut up, sit down, pay attention and do what you are told at school or on the bus?"
And he woulda followed up with the school, and I woulda been in deep watermelon if the story didn't check out. But that's 1960 America.. not 2005 America. In 1960 America, the teacher or bus driver woulda sent me to the principal, the principal would call home & discuss it with my parnents and then I woulda gotten a swat with a great big oak 'paddle' that woulda made my backside smart for a coupla days. Then when I got home, I woulda been grounded and had to sit in my room till Dad got home and THEN gotten another beatin with a belt.
Net result, when a teacher or authority figure said 'shut up, sit down and face forward', I woulda. I didn't have to worry about the bus driver smackin the crap outta me.. the principal and my Dad had that job.
Nowdays, the parents simply side with the kid, the kid learns to lie and twist the truth and parents just assume the school is staffed by incompetents. (in this situation, that's the case; that bus driver was outta line)
Short answer.. childerns attitudes towards adults and authority figures are shaped in the home, AND at school. By the time I was 10 I certainly understood that mouthing off had a severe penalty.. why haven't these kids learned that? Cause mommy and daddy dropped the ball; at home first, and with the school second. Mommy and Daddy elect the school board, the school board is responsible for making sure the school deals with our kids in a way that's appropriate and rational.
The systems busted, and the breakdown starts in the home.

agreed..
Now if the kid had gotten in his face first..then it'd be more reasonable..
But it looks to be a vietnam vet.. and well.. You don't call a vet a mother ****er..
Now for maybe the busdrivers side of the story -devils advocate-
He felt threatend with someone behind him, tried to restrain the kid, and the kid fought back.. etc..
-
The bus driver shoulda stayed in his seat, smiled like a shark and invitied the salamander to sit down and fasten his belt.
When the pinhead refused, he shoulda placed that radio call to the sheriff and had the kid removed from the bus. THEN he shoulda smiled like a shark again and asked politely if anybody else wanted a ride in a police car..
Then he shoulda gone to the principal with the tape and said 'this kid's trouble, don't trust him behind me when I'm driving. Get him another way to school or get me an apology from him and his parents; together.'
Takes a village. The systems broke.

Easy to say, but impossible to do. They wont even let schools paddle kids anymore. Its ridiculous.
Almost as stupid as parents nowadays putting kids in "timeout." What is that ****? When I was a kid and I did something stupid or wrong I got a whupping or grounded and I damn sure learned my lesson. It only had to happen once or twice before I figured out how to act and that my parents meant business. Too many parents now let their kids run all over them and then try to place the blame for lack of discipline on the schools or teachers or society in general. Take a little responsibility and quit making excuses for your kid being a moron.

Wow...I read the thread before I watched the video.
Un-****ing-believable.
Driver's actions were a bit out of line but I cant say that if I were in the same situation I would have reacted differently. He should have just stayed in his seat or at least in the front of the bus facing the kids and waited for the deputy.
The lack of respect those kids show for people in authority amazes me.....well I guess it should amaze me, but to tell the truth, in today's world it doesnt really.
We got kids in our neighborhood who play soccer every day in the little park on the corner of our street. A few weeks ago we were coming home in the afternoon after the kids were out of school and some of them were walking to the park for their daily game. Walking in the middle of the street.....didnt even try to move to the sidewalk when they saw us approaching. Not until I got right on top of them did they bother to move to the sidewalk....then proceeded to give me dirty looks and cuss at me as I drove by. Not too smart on their part since I live 3 houses from their park. I parked in the driveway and then walked back to the park and asked the kids who cussed me out where they lived. They of course refused to answer me and proceeded to call me a few more names...in Spanish this time since they assumed I didnt understand them. Growing up in South Texas I learned a little Spanglish and knew all the cuss words anyway, so I answered them back in their foreign tongue and you should have seen their jaws drop.
Fast forward to the next week. Kid across the street from me, who is a good kid, sophomore in high school...trumpet player...comes over to practice with me in the garage while I was playing my baritone. I asked him about the address of the individuals who I had the run in with the week before and he tells me.
Cut to the chase....after a short talk with the parents, I had 3 very contrite young soccer players standing in their parents living room trying to explain their actions and offering up apologies for them. They were very surprised that I had found out where they lived and it was at least 2 weeks before I saw those individuals playing soccer in the park again. I only hope that they learned a lesson from this. I know when I was a kid and screwed up getting grounded always made me see the light.
-
My bus drivers always had a great cure for jerkwads. They would tell challenge them to come up to the front. As soon as they were standing in the isle, they would jam on the brakes and get them airborne. Worked every time. They were always crying for Mommy when it was over.:rofl
-
Child on the right in a white t-shirt assaulted the driver. Pure and simple. Not only verbalized an aggressive statement but mad an aggressive move to the driver's rear. Disconnect yourself from parenthood and imagine that was a kid dressed as a gangster closing on your six with an aggressive tone. Tell me you would have acted differently.
-
yet the driver reacted to the voice..
Again.. I belive the kids are at fault..
I don't care what they did they disrespected authority and they should be happy that they learn it now opposed to down the street when they refuse to drop their carving knife on a hunting trip and approach a gamewarden... Seeing as how disrespectful these kids are sickens me..
Only disrespect I've given people is on these boards and my parents and on the boards its fun and games.
-
Pure BS. When I was that kid's age, teachers and principals and bus drivers didnt just have the right to spank kids. They made such an art form out of it we were more hurt by the lead up to the spanking than the act. I remember one teacher that had an extra large paddle, with checkerboard marks cut into it (he said so it would hurt more and leave a more of a mark). Its not that any of them ever really hurt us physically. They sure spanked alot lighter than my old man did when I got home. He used a leather belt. But they took so much pain to set it up, the psyhcology of it all was ingenious now looking back. They rarely had to actually resort to it. Kids nowadays have no sense there are any consequences for their actions. Then they are all surprised when they get old enough to get their little prettythanges hauled off to jail, and blame the system, right along with their pansy-prettythang parents that didnt discipline them.
-
The driver had no means of retreat or withdrawal from the perceived threat. A perceived threat is one that a reasonable person would acknowledge as a threat. the child was aggressively verbal and pursued the driver. With no means of retreat, he turned to deal with the threat, and attempted to subdue the antagonist. A choke hold may appear brutal, especially against a child, but given the threatening nature of many people, abiet children, would constitue an overwhelming force. I hope they do this right...
-
I do agree that the inital confrontation with the child at the front of the bus was overly aggressive, but from that point on, everything seemed handled by the book. he contacted the authorities, then attempted to resolve the situation.
BTW my wife sides with the children...
-
If it's any comfort (which it probably isn't) things aren't much better here. The trick is that they know all the rules much as DiabloTX says, and know how far they can go.
Funnily enough, I was on a bus in Concord, California when a similar incident broke out with some school kids, who were effing and blinding. The driver came back and told them to knock it off - and they did. But oh, that was 1981...
I've got another story in which I managed to have two arrogant little bastages aged ~13 chucked off a train. Made me feel good. I'll tell it if we get into talking about other incidents like this bus video.

You nailed it on the head here. The kids were out of line, but the driver lost his temper and made it a lot worse than it should have been.

But if the deputies had come, who's to say the kids would have shown any more respect to them? Would deputies have any rights to use physical force? If yes, then they're in the same position as the bus driver found himself. If no, stalemate...

As I said, part of the problem was that the driver lost his temper. Once he did that, a result was that the kids' misbehavior escalated. While inappropriate, it was also provoked. IMO, they felt the driver had lost control of himself (arguably a valid conclusion, based on what I saw) and felt they needed to defend themselves.
I'm not defending the kids here, they were the primal causal factor in the incident, apparently. I'm just saying the driver exacerbated the situation. There's not always a clearcut right/wrong in these things.
Deputies could be assumed to be professionals who know how best to control a situation. The driver had obviously lost control of his charges, but IMO its reasonable to assume the deputies either would have been treated with respect, or they would have been able to restrain anyone who needed to be restrained in a calm and orderly fashion. Either option would have been preferable.

The driver was himself a child in the era when we had respect. What would you have done if a bratty 12YO had called you a MF? If the answer is to ignore it, then the signal goes out that it's OK to disrespect the driver, OK to swear at him - and they feel they have won. Kudos goes to the kid who did it - in the eyes of the other kids who were there. Next time, they'll take it a bit further, or maybe one of the other brats will want to try his hand. I'd be interested to hear from people in other countries about this.
In that train incident, I had to bite my lip, and summoned the driver once the train stopped at a station even though those brats showed little more respect than the kids in the bus video.
-
I'm not sure to have it fully understood (*** kids speak english :p)
Didn't the kid say mother****er ?
He is lucky I was not the bus driver he would have ended with a bloody nose ...
-
After watching the video, I think the driver restrained himself accordingly. In fact, he restrained himself too much. Once the kid took a swing, the gloves were off IMHO. He should have beat the kid until the kid could not have responded.
Coddling the little thugs will only make them think they have the upper hand and give them reason to try it again. NOTHING like that would have ever happened on a bus I rode on. The kids would have had a 45mph to zero ride to the dashboard, then gotten a whipping with a pine board once they returned to school for disrespecting the driver.
That was fluff'n disgusting to watch.

As a matter of fact, it reminds me of a field trip we took when I was a freshman. I was always a bit of a smartass, and that day I was in rare form. When we arrived at the park we were to have lunch at the principal called me over to the bus and started a conversation. Once I was distracted I was blindside tackled from behind by another teacher running at full speed and was thoroughly beaten, not with a paddle but with a fist. I still have the ruptured disc to remind me today what happens when you are a smartass to an authority figure. Nothing was ever said or done to the principal or teacher because I deserved what happened because I was out of line. This was circa 1975.
-
Here in Ohio, I've heard about kids using the "system" against the parents as well. It's a law that you can't use anything other then your hand to strike your kid. I've known several single mothers with 11yr to 13 yr old kids that just dont have the strength to make a serious impression just with their bare hand. I've actually known a mother that had a kid "inform" on her to his school because she used a belt. Of course, the end result for the kid could have ended up worse and they would have taken him away from her and stuck him in a foster home.

Whatever it was, that teacher lost control.

I'm sure there was other things that led up to the incident. The bus driver is responceble for ALL the passengers safety. I'm sure there were safety issues for the OTHER passengers.
I also heard on the news the driver was charged with simple assualt, while the kid was charged with a feloney aggrevated assault.
Tuff call if i was in the bus drivers shoes, and a few were jepordizing the safety of the rest.
Althou, If i was the kid and my dad was the bus driver, I KNOW how that would of ended. Without a call to the sheriff's also.

Are you guys sure thats a "school bus". Cuz ive watchd it afew times and it looks alot like one of the Juvenile Facility type buses. That and the Uniform the guys wearing (can anyone make out what it says on the front of his shirt. Another thing, hes wearing a name tag. Might be that state or something but none of the bus drivers here have name tags and they wear just regular everyday clothes.
Another thing, usually the schools dont have deauptys, but they have just regular police officers. At the Juvenile places they have sheriffs and deauptys as well as officers.
The way all those kids are acting that way, makes alot more since to me. I see there is a girl there and some other younger kids. But in the Juvenile Detention centers they have all ages etc.
Just a thought, not sure but i just wanted to put that out there.
I agree, someone needs to show that punk exactly how big he really is.

Nobody said anything about beating them....but a well timed spanking can do wonders. I was only spanked twice as a kid for stuff that I can actually remember thinking that if I got caught I was in big trouble, but I darn sure learned the lesson and didnt screw up like that anymore. Most of the time, a grounding worked just as well. But I always knew that if I messed up bad enough or talked back the way I see some kids do today then the belt was waiting for me or even worse the long wait in my room after mom said, "wait til your father gets home." I hated that wait and most of the time that was enough of a deterrent to keep me from screwing up again.

Some contract bus services use uniforms for their drivers, and everyone is big on the "nametag" thing these days, to provide accountability. No "Mr. Anonymous".

Let parants do as they will. assuming there are parents.

Just watched that for the first time...
That bus driver is an idiot. The kids are out of control and deserve punishment, but his reactions are downright stupid.

You beat me to it. The company that runs for most of the local schools here called "Durham Transportation" has uniforms that look a lot like the one the driver is wearing. None of the schools here have a private police force, they all use the County Sheriff's office.

How would you react to an outright aggressive teenager coming up behind your back and yelling *MoFo* at you? I would say most adults would defend theirselves as if they were being physically attacked. Especially with no escape route or place to retreat to. The fault lies completely with the kid that gets up out of his seat and follows the driver down the aisle yelling at him.

Agreed, Terror.. if I was a passenger on a regular bus and some kid made agressive threatining moves.. I'd cold-**** his bellybutton and ask questions later.
But that ain't the deal here.. THAT bus driver is a represenative of the school. Care to guess what the school policy is for unruly kids on a bus? Hazard a guess as to why that bus has a radio?
Unfortunately, the moment that bus driver GOT UP to go back there and kick some butts he blew it. Big time.
No question, the kid had an bellybutton whuppin commin. But that drivers responsibility includes the saftey of ALL the brats on that bus.. he shoulda stayed in the seat, got the sherrif on the scene. And quit that stupid job because he's not savvy enuff or thick skinned enuff to deal with the special problems that go with that particular job.
I know I don't have the temperment for that job.. now he does too.

The fault lies with our society that has produced children that cannot be controlled.
As a parent my biggest fear is that my parenting will result is prettythanghole kids like this. Since parents hands are tied these days by our local CPS and the fact that when kids cry woilf to CPS the parents are automatically guilty
Personally I applaud the bus driver's actions. Kids need to be put in their place..and If it had been my kid actig like that..he'd have deserved it and I would say nothing to authorities.
Someone put the idea in our childrens heads that they have some sort of rights...NO THEY DON'T...The constitution does not apply to any child in my custody as far as I'm concerned. They are my responsibility until they reach 18..then they can do what they want..until then they only have rights that I grant them.

well, if you ever hear me talking about changing my profession to bus driver, come kill me. It would be real mercy thing.
When I was in school, I was very small, and we moved alot, so bigger kids always had to try me out. Every new school had to remove my bus privilages for that year, so I had to walk alot. What's wrong with making those kids walk? While attending one school, I had to walk close to 4 miles to get there, but after awhile I started to enjoy walking to school.

One of my teachers has been a history teacher for possibly 25 years now. Anyways, you screw around or not do a project, he walks up to you and smacks ya in the back of the head and says "What the hell are you thinking ? " And then the usual followup is "Go ahead, cry to your parents I hit you, they probally will do the same. " So far, 20 some odd years later, hes still teaching, yet you have a parent complaint, and has the highest passing grades in class and on exams. He smacked me good once, turned me around quick, probally one of my favorite teachers in my school career.

One of my teachers has been a history teacher for possibly 25 years now. Anyways, you screw around or not do a project, he walks up to you and smacks ya in the back of the head and says "What the hell are you thinking ? He shows no fear of retribution..thats why the kids don't cry to their parents. I feel that teens respect someone more when someone stands up to them.

I had a pretty good lip on me back in the days before I joined the military. I really don't recall what I said or did that particular day. I think it was more of a cumulative effect.
They took you in the Military with a ruptured disk? Uh...OK.

I would say most adults would defend theirselves as if they were being physically attacked. Especially with no escape route or place to retreat to. The fault lies completely with the kid that gets up out of his seat and follows the driver down the aisle yelling at him.

He should have sat quitely, taken good notes and smiled the smile of a man with power at the little twerps. When the deputies arrived he could have calmly described the situation and gone on with his life. He lost his cool and the kids had him beat.

Yup. "smile like a shark".
Now, if there's nobody abround, no camera and just me & a mouthy lil twerp...
Muhahahhahahhahhaaa!
Come to think of it, we had a gym coach that did a 'chevy chase' on a wizeass. Tripped the kid, then with a fake 'helping grab' launched the guy into some lockers, then flipped him over the bench and then fell on him while bending over to 'help him up'.. all while apologizing profusely.. "oh, damn; so sorry, whups.. oh, crap; here; lemme give yah a hand.. geeze I'm sucha klutz.. you ok??" awsome. The jerk limped for a week. Was all an 'accident'. LOL!

Now if this were bizarro-fantasy world the best thing to do would be to deck the closest one... than stand on his chest to get a little height while you instruct the rest to sit quietly.

Hangtime, those kind of accidents happen in military program Im in or on the football team. Someone isnt pulling their weight, something happens.
