Kinda enjoy the old films so Bogie, Grant, Fonda, Cagney etc are favorites.
But I kinda have a soft spot for the old B24 pilot, Jimmy Stewart.
Never acted in a war film, but played a combat pilot in real life. He didn't have to do it but felt it was his resposibility. Enlisted before Pearl Harbor and after winning an Oscar. Needless to say his movie bosses were not happy.
B17 instructor pilot
B24 pilot and Squadron CO 703rd BS, 445th BG, 8th AF
Group Operations officer 453rd BG
Lead the 445th BGs first mission to Keil, Germany December 13, 1943 and ended up flying 20 or so combat missions including to Berlin on March 22, 1944 and was flying on D-Day as well.
Image is from the recent book "Jimmy Stewart-Bomber Pilot" by Starr Smith.

He did Unca Sam and the Airforce a huge favor.. he did 'Strategic Air Command'.. excellent 'propaganda film; excellent footage of the B-36's in it.

Ditto here I love watching the old films as well.
In alot of ways its like watching a snapshot into the past as to how people were.
Never really thought about it till one day I was listening to my father in law talk and suddenly noticed some of the expressions and mannerisms.
then I started thinking about my grandfather and realised how he spoke and how his expressions and mannerisms were similar to movies made during the roaring the early talkies in the 20s
What we now consider corny acting is really the accurate way people were back then

Not really "War Film" though. He retired as a Brigadier General in 1968. He'd gotten his Mach 2 pin in a B58 Hustler and flown in 52s as well
He's also done the Monty Stratton story. Stratton being a wartime P38 pilot who lost a leg, but was able to return to major league baseball as a pitcher. And of course he did the Glenn Miller story.
I always think it ironic that his first film after returning from the war was "It's a Wonderful Life" where he portrays a guy who was 4F while his brother goes away to become a war hero pilot.

I believe you are talking about "Draw!" (http://imdb.com/title/tt0087174/) . One of the first HBO films. Kirk Douglas was the film's other star.
-
Jimmy Stewart and Jack Lemmon. OK I know that's two.
Throw in Johnny Dep for good measure.

Bruce Campbell is a great "tongue in cheek" actor. Rarely in any big budget flicks, he always steals the scene. I loved "The Adventures of Briscoe County, Jr.".
-
Thx rpm!.....a Kirk Douglas bonus I don't remember. Now if I can find a copy,
.:)
BTW another Kirk Douglas venue I always liked is Lonely are the Brave, great movie if you're Douglas fan.

Me:D Well I did have a line in national TV program, well an Irish soap. When I say line I really mean word....."Great!". It needed two takes. I fluffed the first one would you believe by trying expand my role. I added a "yes"
But for a real actor. I have to say Steve McQueen. He was too cool
:aok and James Stewart for being a combat pilot.

Monty Stratton lost his leg in a hunting accident before the war. You are thinking of Bert Shepard. He was a P38 pilot who lost his leg when he was shot down and was a POW. Shepard's story has not been told yet, cause I know the guy who owns the movie rights, and wrote the script.

Most of the ones named are among my favorites but Cagney would be number one, followed closely by Wayne.
And the thing I miss most in movies anymore is the "who was that guy" actors. Those sometimes leading but mostly background talent that added flair.
Ben Johnson
Bruce Dern
Paul Fix
Martin Balsom
Pat Hingle
Carl Malden
Woody Strode
Jack Elam
Keenan Wynn
Walter Brennan
Noah Beery Jr.
Dub Taylor
Michael J. Pollard
Charles Martin Smith
Richard Jaeckel
Jack Watson
These, and many more, are who gave the older movies a depth not seen in modern movies.
It seems that FX is the only co-star needed today.
-
David Prowse or Keiko

Nick Cage

Ed Harris
Tom Hanks
Will Smith
Sam Shepherd
Dennis Quaid
Martin Sheen

Kevin Spacy
Bruce Willis

Kevin Kostner
Morgan Freeman
Tom Hanks
Ray Liota

Bogie has to be mine. When he said he couldn't stand leeches has to be a cinematic classic.
Unless I just missed it, I'm really surprized nobody has mentioned Jack.

Not "Draw!"... but "Fist Full of Dynamite". I believe it was Sergio Leone's last movie.
Good movie, too. :)
