Lately I've been experiencing a big slow down on my computer here at the office. It comes in spurts, and you can hear the fan spool up because its working.
I don't surf the web to much here at work, this probably being the main site. I try and maintain my computer clean and up to date, but these slow downs happen and its annoying.
I've come to the conclusion it might be another computer on the network thats been infected and the "worm" is jumping around computers.
I've ran all scans I can think of, but is there anything I can use to monitor network traffic? I.e. communication between computers etc.
Any ideas?

Start with this...

Did the admins instal an antivirus software that fires up i the middle of the day? The wisards here did that. The had the scans start at 11am.

Where I work our virus scanner starts up Tuesdays at 1230 and runs on my PC for about 2-3 hours. It totally hozes up the performance.
Better yet on Wednesdays at 1230 they have some stupid software inventory program scan my whole PC and it pretty much renders my PC useless during this scan.
Are you sure you hear the fan spool up and not the CD/DVD drive?

Clean it out.. it's dusty..
I cleaned out this machine and the start up or booting process sped up by 25%.

Ok figured the problem out. It seems there was a corrupted system file in windows. Put my Windows resource CD and ran this magic command line in the run.
It took about 45 minutes for the scan (which supposedly should only take 10) to finish. It repaired my windows systems files and now I'm back up to speed, running a bit faster if I might add. Because in the search to fix my system I adjusted a few things that seem to have made a difference.
Thanks for all your folks help it was much appreciated.

Your post inspired me to tweak my XP Pro system. The BlackViper site is down but I found several others. All said and done, I went from 44 process running and 230mb in use down to 22 and 127mb in use. Shutting things off like Indexing Service, System restore and much more really gave me a few more FPS on a few of the games I play.

What magic command line? Sorry but just don't understand the cryptic post.
