Marine Capt. Brian R. Chontosh received the Navy Cross Medal from the Commandant of the United States Marine Corps, Gen. Michael W. Hagee, during an awards ceremony Thursday at Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Training Center, Twentynine Palms, Calif.
While leading his platoon north on Highway 1 toward Ad Diwaniyah, Chontosh's platoon moved into a coordinated ambush of mortars, rocket propelled grenades and automatic weapons fire. With coalitions tanks blocking the road ahead, he realized his platoon was caught in a kill zone.
He had his driver move the vehicle through a breach along his flank, where he was immediately taken under fire from an entrenched machine gun. Without hesitation, Chontosh ordered the driver to advanced directly at the enemy position enabling his .50 caliber machine gunner to silence the enemy.
He then directed his driver into the enemy trench, where he exited his vehicle and began to clear the trench with an M16A2 service rifle and 9 millimeter pistol. His ammunition depleted, Chontosh, with complete disregard for his safety, twice picked up discarded enemy rifles and continued his ferocious attack.
When a Marine following him found an enemy rocket propelled grenade launcher, Chontosh used it to destroy yet another group of enemy soldiers.
When his audacious attack ended, he had cleared over 200 meters of the enemy trench, killing more than 20 enemy soldiers and wounding several others.

Oh, one other quote from the story.
"I was just doing my job, I did the same thing every other Marine would have done, it was just a passion and love for my Marines, the experience put a lot into perspective," said Chontosh.
I was just doing my job....

wow,
The Navy cross is a real covited medal in the corps too. They usually don't give to people that survive combat.
Semper FI Capt. Good to see some officers now a days still have testicular fortitude!

I would've thought it would've been medal of honour material....how is the Navy cross in comparison?

Its Hard to imagine what it takes to do something like that.

WTG Marine.
Textbook on reacting to an ambush. Fight directly through it and turn the attackers into defenders. The 507th Maintenance Company "should" have reacted in the same way. But then their weapons "should'" have functioned as well.

Two negative comments, both from non-Americans.
"Bloody hell...sounds like one of those bad 80's action movies!!!"
"probably a daily occurence in WW2."
Sometimes it's better to say nothing at all.

Bet if he followed the watermelon trail he'd cap a few more.

notice how he blew thru the breach and brought the attack to them.. (not the front of the ambush but one of the weak sides of it..) (and if he got 20 of them.. then they routed pretty bad (empty weapons lying around etc..) when he brought the fight to them.. sounds like medal material to me..)
kind of makes Jessica Lynch's (not her fault stupid bigwigs..) silver star look like a piece of tin doesn't it..
basic military tactics do work..
Its amazing what a little training will do..
wtg...

your right and wrong. The Navy cross is the second highest medal awarded for combat heroism in the Navy/Marine Corps.
The Navy/Marine Corps still has the Medal of Honor wich is the highest award for combat heroism.
The Airforce has the Air Force Cross
The Army has the Distinguished Service Cross
