I watched Clay/Liston 1 (for about the hundreth time) and man o man, if he wasn't the abosolute quickest heavyweight I don't know who was.
His best years were before he was stripped of his title, but even after a three and a half year layoff he managed to become champion again.
-
Yea, Liston rocked. :)

In SOB I trust.

ya but who did he fight?
-
yup, im a contender!
oh heavyweight? thought you said overweight.. moving along.
-
Marciano?!? LOL Surely you jest. He was about 5'10, 185, and drug his right foot behind him so he looked like Quasimoto in the ring.
Ali woulda picked him apart.
-
Ali...Louis...Tyson...
George Foreman..go ahead and laugh, the guy was a monster in his prime, and not too bad in his 40's, either...even gave evander a serious run for his money...
Definitely the most marketable
-
Ok. Ali? Joe Louis? George Foreman? Certainly among the best of all time, although I think I'd have to give it to Foreman as the toughest and scrappiest of the bunch. He just wouldnt lay down and die. Even after........what, 13 kids? Those grills? His daughter boxing? Still looks like he could go back into training. But the best fighter overall? Lennox Lewis. He's smart, uses tactics in the ring to wear down his opponents, AND has the guns to slug it out with just about anyone toe to toe.
-
Max Baer. He killed 2 guys in the ring. And without him we wouldn't have Jethro Bodine!

bit more like 210lbs ish there for Rocky. Woulda been a heck of a fight both in their prime.
I think Tyson at his best could have beat any of 'em tho'. Tyson had great defense, and the best knockout punch in fighting.
Tyson vs. Ali? Tyson in Two
-
Lewis I don't think has that great of a jaw. He had to hold onto Tyson like his life depended on it for the first 4 or 5 rounds. Great champion overall, but imho, he doesn't have heart that I've seen in others.
George Foreman was not better than Moorer when he won... but he was alot smarter. Absolutely amazing he was able to keep his wits after that kind of beating, get Moorer into position, and then lay him out. He wasn't that smart when he fought Ali. Had he not left boxing when he did, he could very easily be a contender for the greatest.
Tyson was a rampaging beast in his prime, but he could never go the distance. He gets frustrated too easily and loses focus. He doesn't fight smart either. I watched him duck into the same Lewis uppercut probably 100 times.
Ali, Liston, Louis, Jefferies, Johnson, Tunney, Holmes... I dunno. If I had to pick, I'd go with Ali since he was pretty entertaining, but they're all on the same level imho.
Now, if we want to compare greatest pound for pound fighters of all time, that's easy, Sugar Ray Robinson.. unless you go back to bareknuckle & bring up Fitzsimmons & Dempsey.
-
If you want to go back to bareknuckle fighters, I'd have to humbly submit men like Jem Mace and Morrison, as well as Dempsey. Mace held titles in both England and America.
-
I just watched a special about bareknuckle on the the history channel maybe a month ago.. man I wish I could remember this guys name...
iirc, it was something ridiculous like the 80th round, after trimming off pieces of his ears that had been nearly ground off, he popped his eye back in and went on to win the fight.

Holeyfeild Micheal Spinks with Spinks winning??

That lame Don King fight last week (was it this week? hard to keep track) on HBO didn't last more than a minute. Golata was knocked through the ropes on the second knockdown =P Then again, that's the same stooge that wouldn't come out back out of his corner in round 2 vs. Tyson

Cool site MT.
I have to go wtih Foreman. Not for anything he did in the ring. But with how ****ing funny he was during his 80s comback.
I remember him on Letterman saying of Mike Tyson: "I'm gonna crush his head like Okra"
I have no idea WTF that means, but I laugh every time I think about it.
He also went on to explain how he got so fat: Fast food Drive throughs. It was probably the best interview I've ever seen.
And they had some awesome footage of him beating up tomato cans. He would just walk out there without pausing and beat the ever-living **** ouf of those poor ****ers.
Tyson-Foreman in their prime. That would be hillarious to watch.

i am!!..i would beat mike typson like a early sunday morning boner:lol <~jk:) great fighter..tuff as hell in his prime
marciano was only undefeated heavy champ in the world....and unlike tyson..marciano had to fight up to 20 rounds a fight<~~if it lasted that long..tyson only 12 rounds at the most..i would say endurance i have to give the fight to rocky

Max Baer. Killed a couple guys in the ring.

Hulkamania woulda run wild and the Hulkster would leg drop any of those "pansie" boxers.
Greatest Hvy Weight of all time....(http://www.hulkhogan.co.uk/hulkster490.jpg)

Tyson never impressed me. He's never been that great a boxer. As a straight up brawler, the fact that he's about brain dead already and has tremendous power, makes him great in that sense. But as a real boxer, with the abilty to defend, and to deal with a really good defense, he sucks. In the ring with one of the true greats in their prime, Tyson's only prayer would be a lucky punch.
There have been very few really GOOD heavyweight boxers since Ali. Foreman is an anomoly (sp?), he's from the Ali era and made it into another decade or so with DESIRE. The only heavyweights that impressed me much since Ali were Lewis and Holyfield. Holmes, Tyson, and the Spinks brothers just happened to be decent when there was no great boxer around in his prime.
I figure Ali was already being affected by Parkinson's disease even before he retired, although not so you'd notice. I'm not talking about slurred speech and tremors, but more slowed reaction times and such. Combined with age and the decreasing desire, it was enough to allow guys like Holmes to come to the forefront.
-
The Greatest was the greatest.
Before the suspension he was 29-0 with 23 KO's ... hard to imagine what could have been ... a projection would make him 45-0 with 36 KO's.
While I admire Rocky Marciano and his record it is still a fact that he fought his cousin 13 times.
Hockey has Wayne Gretzky. Baseball has Jackie Robinson. Boxing has Cassius Clay. Humanity has Muhammad Ali.
Pffffttt on the hulkster ... he couldn't even do better than a draw against a movie character. ;) :D

What's funny is that anyone would believe Rocky Marciano could hold Ali's jockstrap. Marciano had a 68 in. reach, Ali an 84 in. reach. Marciano was a plodder, Ali had wheels. Marciano got knocked down by light heavies, Ali demolished an undefeated Bob Foster simply by out sizing him.
Marciano was fortunate there were no good boxers in his day- he came in after the Joe Louis/ Max Schmelling era and retired before the Patterson-Liston Ali era.
Ali dominated boxing, was Skuzzied from boxing for three and a half years, and came back to win the belt again.
That was the Golden Age of boxing.
-
Agreed.....Golden Age of Heavyweight boxing occured between the 60s' and early 70's. A good number of formidable heavyweights around at that time.
Oh....Ali...Liston...Frazier. ..Jimmy Young...Larry Holmes...Foreman.
I know I'm missing a few. The last 20 years if you are a fan of Heavywieght Boxing you've been bored to death.
Tyson was never a Boxer....and who the hell is buster Douglas LOL.
-
Bah! You's are all clueless
Everyone knows who is The Best EVERRRR!!!! (http://rockythemovie.com/) :)

Cassius, was "better than" Ali.
It ain't Maricano's fault.
But keep grasping.

in his 49 pro bouts..he hasnt fought the same person 13 times..cousin or not..talking about amateur bouts or somthing? a few rematches..but i dont see 13 on pro stats
http://www.boxrec.com/boxer_display.php?boxer_id=009032 <~very good site for records
-
Sorry for the confusion. "Cousin" is a boxing insider term for a looser (or over the hill opponent) fought in a home arena.
I should have used the more commonly known term of tomato can.
By contrast Ali fought only 1 man who had a loosing record ... in his 4th or 5th fight IIRC he fought a man who was 0-1.
Hope that cleared that up ... again sorry for the confusion.

cc..thats why i had to ask...lol...,,marciano didnt start fighting till he was 22..and pro when he was 25 right?..did get a few older guys,...but i cant count out the old guys..hehe old george foreman wasnt no push over in his 40's.. think ali was allready a pro by 22?..not sure,,im no boxing guru thats for sure,,but i enjoy watching:)
