Title: French bashing
Post by: spitfiremkv on May 27, 2005, 06:06:18 PM
this is the dumbest thing I have ever heard. It clearly displays how little basic knowledge of history the average American has.
Yes, the French were defeated in WW2 by the Germans. Hey, if instead of Canada we had the 3rd Reich as a neigbour, you and I would be writing in German right now. In 1939, the US military was weaker than France's. No way this country could stand a chance agains the Reich's blitzkrieg.
Remember that one of the greatest military leader of all times, Napoleon, was French. remember that in WW1 the French  fought the Germans and Austro-Hungarians to a standstill on their own territory.
yes, France didn't join the war (Bush's war)  in Iraq. and you know what that shows? That shows that the French are smarter than  Americans :P

Napoleon was born in Corsica, 15th of August 1769.

30th of November 1789, a decree had proclaimed Corsica "an integral part of the French Empire".

Napoleon was born not in France, but on an island that in 1768 was by the Treaty of Versailles under the jurisdiction of Genoa, and later would become France.

Napoleon was Corsican and could be thought as born Genovese.

A teacher at the French academy where he studied said of Napoleon, "Corsican of nation and of character, he'll go far if the circumstances favor him."

it's similar with describing all Daytona residents as white trash who live for NASCAR.

Though there's a guy there driving a POS car with a number and "Jemi Powered" written on it that definitely fits the description.

honestly, I prefer hanging out with Americans rather than with French people, but the bashing that goes on-a poor attempt at humour- is totally unwarranted.

I have to beleive Frenchy is a good representation of his countrymen. Maybe your argument should be with some members of Frances government for their decisions, like members of the U.S. government make bad decisions. Most of the French people I've met have been well worth the meeting of them. The resistance in WW2 risked everything and never gave up. Think of them. They were a world class act.

"... Indomitable tenacity, ferocious energy, sublime courage: animated by the most resolute faith in victory, he bequeaths to the French soldier an imperishable memory which will exalt the spirit of sacrifice." Memorial to Guynemer

I personally believe that a lot of damage was done by Charles De Gaulle being an arrogant ungrateful avacado which has sterotyped the French people.

The French are good fighters (yes, even in WWII - look at the french resistance and tell me they were cowards.)

How the heck did the French bashing thing (ranging from threads, blogs, FOX news, ect ect) started anyway? I just noticed one day (2-3 years ago) that people here were renaming our national foods ranging from fries to bread. It's ridiculous!

I could probably post about 1000 reasons why people bash the French. But then Straffo will tell Skuzzy to come here and see what I posted and I would get banned.

If you really want to know some good reasons give me an email address and I will send you them 10 at a time.

I've made a few french jokes...  but after thinking about it, decided to stop.  Of all the nations in Europe, France has been the most consistent ally.  They poured water on the seeds of our liberty in the 1700s, shined the light that helped it grow in the 1800s, and have been through tremendously difficult times during the last century.  In the mid 1940s, we had an opportunity to return the favor by helping free them of their nazi bonds, but you don't end a friendship the moment you 'even the books'.

I might disagree with some of their loud mouth politicians, but we have the same people over here.  I'm embarrassed when I see international attention being given to some people in the US, and I'm certain that I have a counterpart in France who feels the same way about some of his louder countrymen.

I'm not sure that I like everything about France today, but I feel that the history of yesterday's France makes it more then worth giving them the benefit of the doubt until the pendulum swings back.

Because they didn't get sucked into the lies and were against action in Iraq. Bush and company have had a hissy fit ever since. So as always Fox had a hissy too and it's been in the media ever since.

All a bit childish really, but you can't expect much more. Like Rumsifled and "old Europe" they were slagging off Europe left right and center and said stupid things like you are "either with us or against us.".  Didn't take them long to realise they that needed Europes support politcally  and then go back for a few make up PR visits.

All of this leaving US credibilty on the world stage ranked at about zero. Which is a shame really because after Afghanistan they were doing so well. Everything went down the toilet once they started trying to make a case for war in Iraq.

Then how do you explain the only national memorial to our soldiers who died in Europe in WWI exists in France?  We didnt pay for it, thats for sure.  They did.  To express their gratitude.  We still dont have a national WWI memorial on American soil.  When 9/11 came, and our country was in shock, did you see anyone in any other country besides ours setting up memorials to our citizens that had died?  Plenty of them had words to speak in support, but only France truly seemed to grieve with us.  And it wasnt the politicians, it was the people in the streets.  I count things like that much more highly than what some stupid politician says or does.

**Ahem**

[rant]

Yah see there's . Frankly Vichy was huge Then there's . After that, the in Algiers, then pulled the plug and kicked NATO off their soil.

Of course there's always . Seems like every time we can use a lil help we get . Which is really our fault, cause by now we shoulda known better.

In the words of a Great American (and therefor hopefully above censorship):

"Going to war without France is like going deer hunting without your accordion." - General Norman Schwartzkopf

On the other hand... I've got nothin.

:)

Note: French[men] and French[women] are ok, and it should be ok for 'em to blame their government for their bad rap. After all, it's what we do. Americans are OK. It's Bush.. ALLL Boooosh!!

I gotta say I have made an arse out of myself picking on France in the past because of my frustration with the French Government.  But, that said, I think the French People are wonderful, and their country to be very beautiful.

My hat is off to people like Frenchy who take the bashing that his country has received and carry on without a grudge.

to you Frenchy and to France.

Oh heck, I'll play along:

Dago comes from the Spanish given name Diego. Its nautical in origin and originally referred to Spanish or Portuguese sailors on English or American ships. This usage dates to the 1830s. The meaning eventually broadened to include anyone from southern Europe, before narrowing again and restricting usage to Italians. The sense meaning Italian dates to at least the 1870s.

The term "Dago" by those who understand the correct context know that "Dago" in and of itself wasn't an insult or slur, but used in phrase such as "dumb Dago" would be accepted to mean "dumb Italian".

Somehow I am not surprised you had to ask and didn't understand the historical beginning, actual meaning or the way it became associated as a slur.

But then, based on your posts, you don't appear to me to be to bright or learned.  Thanks for highlighting that for everyone to see.

The French were fighting violent islamism years before the issue was even on the USA's radar.

The French have a record of arresting, trying and convicting islamic extremists superior to any other european nation and far in advance of that of the US.

The french intelligence services have arguably the best human intel setup in the middle east after Israel. The DGSE had agents within the Iraqi regime prior to the recent invasion who warned against exactly the type of insugency we are seeing currently.

France has a good record of cooperating with its allies in counter terrorism; good examples would be with Spain against ETA and with the UK against the IRA. The US on the other hand tolerated for decades extreme irish republicans fundraising on behalf of the IRA within US borders out of pure domestic political expediency.

The French president lied to Bush and to the public about the war in Iraq.
President Jacques Chirac had personally told President George W. Bush well ahead of time that France would be at America’s side.

France urged Saddam to commit genocide.
Saddam launched his genocidal campaign against the Marsh Arabs in southern Iraq to make their region “safe” for French oil engineers.

France helped build Saddam’s long-range missiles and nukes.
Based on exclusive access to new documents, provided by Iraq to the United Nations — that French defense companies were key partners in helping Saddam Hussein perfect the long-range missiles that killed U.S. soldiers in Saudi Arabia in 1991 and rained terror onto Israel.

Chirac has blocked cooperation on a high-profile terrorism case.
France’s top counter-terrorism judge was ordered to stop cooperating with the United States in the prosecution of Zacarias Moussaoui despite mounds of documents that would have helped the United States to convict Moussaoui of conspiracy to commit mass murder.

France illegally sold U.S. military secrets to Saddam Hussein.
A prominent French defense company shipped U.S.-designed laser designator pods to Iraq in the 1980s that compromised the most high-tech weapons in the U.S. arsenal.

President Chirac almost went to jail for corruption.
Chirac was on the verge of getting indicted on corruption charges in 1999 until he cooked up an immunity deal with the head of the French Supreme Court, former Socialist foreign minister Roland Dumas. While the French corruption scandals are well known in France, they have rarely been reported in the United States and will alternately shock and amuse American readers.
