Title: LSTs: Mobile vehicle bases?
Post by: Rojo on January 17, 2001, 02:01:00 PM
Haven't seen a lot of discussion on this, and I was wondering about the implemetation. Jarbo was sitting in my office today and we began talking about how these landing ships would work in the MA.  My thoughts are that it should operate much like the CVBG, only with a LST at it's core instead of a CV.  Or, include it as an additional vessel in the CVBG, that could be attacked and sunk separate from the CV. Instead of beaching itself, the commander could designate a vehicle spawn point at some max distance from the LST (basically, click on the clipboard map to set the spawn point, similar to targeting the naval guns).

My own preference would be to put the amphibious ship in a separate TG from the CV, with it's own escorts (can you say "naval gunfire support? (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)).  In fact, instead of a single ship to represent the LST, why not  multiple LST's in the TG, each one "carrying" (able to launch) different types of vehicles; one LST for tanks, another for M-16's, another for M-3's, etc.

How about it, HTC?  Can you toss us a bone and tell us how the amphibs will work?  Thanks.

I like the idea of a separate task group. I think we might want to throw in a couple new GV's along with it as a bit of shore defense. I hear they will add the Priest. Maybe some speedy fire power along with it like an M8 Armored car. I can't wait to see all of this stuff.
