Title: Star Wars Galaxies
Post by: Pooh21 on May 31, 2005, 03:09:50 PM
I just got this cause it came with the space expansion pack(mmm clubbing RR spacebabyseals), and it was cheap, and the free month will tide me over until I move out of my wifes house and get my own place so I can play AH2 again, anyway . Install it, go to create new account, only to find out the bastages are selling the CD without the CD key, and the cd key that came with the expansion pack is invalid. This is just to say wish more online game companys were like HTC, and had account and billing problems sorted soon after I mailed them instead of no response. Plus you dont have to pay 28 bucks to have AH2 beer coasters.

Wait until you actually spend time playing the game =P Since the entire economy is player made, every item is unique. This leads to horrendous amounts of lag, especially entering player cities. You spend more time loading than you do playing. On top of that, there's no economic consistency across servers. Some have out of control inflation that makes it harder on newbies w/o connections. The graphics are several generations behind (it's the Everquest 1 engine), and the cockpit textures are only marginally better than X-Wing vs Tie-Fighter.

I ignored my friends. I was a fool. World of Warcraft is better in every single aspect.

well joy not only what I spent my cash on is useless, its useless crap. Thats why i quit Anarchy Online was player city causing lag. Guild Wars is amusing  but seeing chicks in chainmail and swords whacking babyseals gets old after a bit as well. Thinking that my 28 bucks was better spent on beer and doner kebobs insted.

Ive been playing it for about a year now.  I should quit but I am a starwars geek and I still enjoy the stupid game.

Hmmm...looks like you play on a crappy system.  Player created items do not cause lag, never had and never will.  Yes, there is lag in some of the major NPC cities but that is usually do to the amount of player's spamming their products.  Load times take a long time?  Again, that usually depends on your system and quality connection.  It only takes me on average to 15 seconds (If I'm loading into my house or a player city) and maybe 30 seconds if I load into a NPC city like Coronet.

And for the graphics, where did you pull that from?  SWG uses the same graphics engine as EQ2 does, albeit the engine did get some fine tuning for EQ2, which by the way was incorperated into the latest expansion.  Go to Kashyyyk and see for yourself.

As for the economic disparity between the servers, that's what you'll get when you use a real time economy system for your game.

And space looks quite nice, I think only Eve Online can compare to the sheer beauty of space.

Anyway, have fun in WoW and tell Leroy I said "Hello".

Blame LucasArts for that.  They released a large shipment of the boxed games with invalid CD-keys and ontop of releasing the game to stores ealier than they said they would.  LucasArts messed up the same way when the JTL expansion came out.  They gave retail stores a whole load of invalid keys for the pre-order.

And as far as the fact that I am moving out, I want out. We are getting a divorce and she is still hoping that we go back but I am gone.

Athlon 64 3200+, 1g of cas2 memory, raptor 10k rpm hd, 6800 GT, sb audigy 2 gamer... nah, no bottlenecks on my PC. I can play Doom3 very, very smoothly in full detail. Not many can do that :)

I thought it was lag, but the result was the same across 4 different servers. Then I checked my wireless NIC and changed over to wired 10/100. Tried everything under the sun I could think of, because I really did want to play, but it was not to be. Still laggy & choppy unless in a very remote region, far far away from player cities. It's not the route to SOE, because other SOE games have worked just fine... even Planetside which is notorious for laggy zergs. The load times themselves were fast hopping into an area, but waiting for everything to magically appear and being frozen while waiting... that just sucked horribly. It made PK totally out of the question, which is why I play these games anyways.

Then the EQ2 engine is crap too :) Unless you prefer the bland EP4-6 starwars (before digital re-touching)... in which case it about looks right.

Kashyyyk is cool, but looks pretty pathetic put side by side with World of Warcraft.

Yeah, I know... but is it a good thing? I don't think so looking from the perspective of a new player. I couldn't tell if it took into account inflation when paying out player missions, but it doesn't look like it.

The space looked nice, but the cockpit textures were crap. They really could've & should've done alot better. To me, the newer cockpits in AH are 10x better at least.

...Eve Online is awesome. Unless you don't have alot of friends in 0.0 space, then it's a pretty, but very mundane grind for money :)

Dunno what server good ol' Leroy is on, but since he's on the Alliance, and everybody in my house is Horde, I wouldn't even be allowed to say hello unless I found his character somehow in game. :)

I was in the SWG beta and played it for almost a year after it went live.  Indy it's a new engine, and EQ2 borrowed the engine.  EQ1's engine couldn't handle what they've got going in SWG.

I got fed up with it when they finally did the Jedi revamp, and in playing with a Jedi on the test server I realized that no matter how I picked skills for my Jedi on the live server, after the revamp I'd never achieve the power my character had at that moment, only 2/3 of the way to master.

Was actually thinkin on sellin my account before the revamp hit, but got caught up moving and haven't messed with it.

Jedi should have stayed in the NPC sphere of the game.  THere was a lot of content, a TON of content for players to immerse themselves in but the Jedi and force powers nixed the other 90% of the game, for me.

I played on and off for about a year.  I was a smuggler/pistoleer.  Eventually i got fed up waiting to be able to do any actual smuggling et al.  Oh and the fact half of the tree in smuggling was useless too.

Still got it on monday and no response. Nice racket they got going there. Get money from customers and its all profit. I dont mind giving money to HTC cause in my opinion they earn it, and AH brings me amusement. But the fact knowing that Fatneck has 28 bucks of my hard earned cash for nothing, then converting it into a roll of silver dollars and is at this very second in time, buggering himself with it and screaming "may the force be with you Jar-Jar" makes me mad.

been playing for a year and a half now, have to say, since the CU the game has my intrest again.  Much more to do and see.  Kinda sad that Jedi is now so far away that I will more then likely not reach it but /respec'd to MBH and having a blast killing the jedi being I cant be one, hehe.

as far as the graphics go, being an old time UO player from beta the MMROPG world has come a long way.

That's no doubt. Beta UO was a trip, but nowadays it's like comparing Doom to Quake III. The funny part is though looking at alot of the game mechanics. I remember being a guinea pig when Raph was using LegendMUD as the testbed for concepts like PKOK, PKE, playing without killing, & skilltrees. He's beaten me with a nerf bat for 10 years now... bastard.

call 1-858-790-STAR and talk to Billing and tell them you got a boxed copy of the expansion with an invalid key and if they can do anything about it.  They might be able to give you a valid key.

Dont worry, you arent alone.  NWN has some of the worst customer service I have ever seen.  Atari is the worst at supporting their products.  I finally emailed them and told them I was using my CDs as skeet targets.

Ok after chatting with a Customer Service rep. I learned my SWG is without a key, and my JTL key was missing 2 letters:confused:

so now having sent a scan of my cd case and receipt like they asked I hope they get back to me soon.

edit yay all is now in order.

I just picked this up last Sunday.  I didn't have any key issues.

Now if only I could play outside of the 5am-8am and 8pm-10pm time windows.  It seems that when ever I log in outside of those times I lag like crazy.

Yeah that is the good thing with the lag, I get frustrated and log out = less trouble with the wife.  :D

I had the intentions of getting into the space combat, but then I started having too much fun with the ground combat.  Maybe next time...

What servers are you guys on?

I've got about 5mil worth of various BE gear, deeds, etc on Valcyn, plus a tier 2 neutral ship w/ uber everything (for its level). If anybody is on that server & wants the stuff, let me know and we'll figure something out. Gonna cancel the account this weekend. WoW is just.. so much better it's not worth even letting my macros grind artisan xp at night.

Im on Valcyn

Apparently when your ship gets porked you have to find another player to rebuild it?

Almost up to an interceptor though. When I get it gonna have someone pimp it all out and kill some rebels

Hrmm, if you wanna play on Intrepid I've got a lowbie on there with another 5mil and some gear. Tommorrow I'll be able to transfer the stuff over. Must reinstall the game first.

I'd do it tonight, but I'm breaking up with my g/f this evening.

Ah, well whatever's clever.  Noobs can share :).

I'm pretty clueless for the time being.  Some fellers set me up with a house on Talin... I think they expect taxes outta me eventually.

Question about space combat:  How separate is it from the rest of the game?  Anything you might achieve 'on the ground' affect your performance in space (or vice versa)?

Its cause of the dashing, daring, and swashbuckling figure I cut in my Imperial Navy Officers uniform.

edit: got a sullustan who is gonna be a privateer on sunrunner. Named Hampster. I need to figure out the ground stuff, spent the whole time either in space or running to and from space trainers.

If you need someone to run around with, let me know.  I started over with a new character on Valcyn.  I wanted to be Rodian, but the armor restrictions won't let you wear most of the cool stuff.  Anyway, I am a human named "Hagio Irenaeus" and I planned on taking the bounty hunter+creature handler route, but we shall see if I actually do it or not.  If you are up for some ground exploration, let me know and we can hook up.

I mostly play Sunday night and  Monday and Tuesday mornings + nights.  Sunday - Tuesday is my weekend.

***Oops I overlooked that you were using a different character on Sunrunner.  Well, if your Imperial pilot gets bored...

I wish I could be more helpful, but I am a noob and this is all I could find:

How do I land at and gain access to theme parks (http://forums.station.sony.com/swg/board/message?board.id=pilot&message.id=45243)

It seems you can interact with each planet and perform ground missions, but how helpful it is to a pilot? - I don't know.  Extra faction points?  Money?  A break from flying?

Title: Star Wars Galaxies
Post by: indy007 on June 04, 2005, 12:28:33 PM
You guys need to look for the (pick your faction) Pilot Trainer. He'll appear on your "m" map overlay in cities that have them. I know Coronet has a neutral trainer. Do the missions, collect the xp, sometimes you get rewarded with a skill you don't have to buy.

Oct: On the ground, the only thing you can do to improve space flight performance is buy better stuff for your spaceship. Skill restrictions make it not all that important. You'll find it's a very long grind to Master Pilot. The fastest & most effective way to do it is to join a guild, find somebody with a YT-1300 freighter (mullenium falcon), and fly with them as a turret. You'll blast stuff way beyond your level and make xp pretty fast.

any of you play in Bria or Flurry?

I got 2 jedi in bria ;)

been playing since launch of the game and i'm appalled at how the game has been going downhill due to incredibly inept management and development.

Their art guys and animators are top notch though. First online game I see no glitches whatsoever with animations or art aside from the usual new-drivers/vid cards having a few issues but those get fixed quite quickly.

Too bad i cant say the same for their other programmers. Seriously, its as if they had released the game and sent the good programmers somewhere else, leaving people hired from the street to do things.
