Title: Experts: Wet Winter Triggered Landslide

LOS ANGELES - Accumulated rainfall from an unusually wet winter most likely triggered Wednesday's landslide that destroyed 18 luxury hillside homes in Orange County's Laguna Beach, scientists say.

Good thing we have expert scientists on this or we would have never known the cause.

I would have thought gravity had something to do with it or maybe a combination of gravity and mud to cause a mudslide, but mudslides are not in my field of expertise.

Holden was this the same group of experts that determined the tobacco companies targeted women to get them to smoke? Thank God for these experts or we'd have never known that Virginia Slims target women!

(You've come a long way baby, to get where you've got to baby...

You've got your own cigarette now baby, you've come a long long way)

It's all so insidiously subtle! The tobacco monsters are teh EVIL!

Thank God we have these experts to point out things like rain plus dirt = mud and that cigarettes wrapped in pink packages are for girls, or we'd all be adrift in a sea of ignorance.

sides of mountains are prone to landslides ....

let's build our house on one...

no worries though, what their insurance doesn't cover, your tax dollars will

News has just reported that mudslides aren't covered in the owners insurance. No company covers it as they consider it an act of God.

Just seems kinda logical that if you build on a steep hillside with soil composed mostly of sand that bad things will happen eventually. Those wacky Californians!!

What would you call those who insist on building and rebuilding on the Mississippi flood plain? How 'bout the ones along the Florida and gulf coasts?

It seems, according to your standards, that there's quite a few whacky people in this country :)

I didn't say that :D

We don't have mudslides in here but floods are every spring bane in northern Finland and also when the ice leaves the lakes it usually takes few berths and sometimes saunas if built near shore with them.
And again ppl build new saunas and leave their berths in the water; hoping they have better luck next spring...

People like to show off. A house built on the side of a mountain looks very cool and posh.  It's also the dumbest place to build one.

While that is quite true, the wacky Californians spend MUCH more to do the same stupid thing and then get all surprised when it falls down.

Sheeesh, for some reason I feel kinda bad for the people who have lost thier homes- it seems to me if you buy a house you have a reasonable expectation it won't slide down the hillside or the local powers that be would have never issued a building permit for that site. Now they've lost not only thier homes but also thier lots, and they're left with nothing.

Hey honey-let's build our house on the side of a hill with no structure, rocks,or trees to support it.

What could be better?

Same thing with those idiots that insist on bulding houses next to rivers prone to major flooding like the Mississippi.

Personally I feel neither Insurance Co's nor our taxdollars should have to pay for either.

You want to roll the dice and build in these areas and you loose, it should be your problem

Money can buy you all sorts of things.
Including permits to build houses in stupid areas LOL

and its not like they havent had these landslides before.
We see them on the news every damn year.

What astounds me is even though these events are widely reported. people still buy these houses.

What astounds me even more is how anyone that dumb to buy a house in such an area can still be smart enough to make the kind of money to AFFORD to buy a house in that kinda area

It's not just the water, the hill, or gravity.

CA has hot, dry summers also.  If the grass isn't burned from the wildfires they have every 2-3 years then the grass doesn't grow a substantial root system due to the lack of water.

Take this 'loose' soil, add some substantial rain, then...viola, someone's house has moved several hundreds of feet.

I find it somewhat strange that people still clasp their hands to the sides of their faces with their mouths wide open (ala Van Gogh's Scream) loudly proclaiming how surprised they are at all the devestation of the has caused.

Come one, it's CA.  A natural disaster occours 2 out of every three years.  Pick one, wildfires, mudslides, earthquakes.

BTW, leading experts are saying CA is due for another earthquake.

mav... not just those whacky Californians... seems that everythime there is tornado or hurricane coverage they show some trailer park villiage that has been flattened with everyone saying "how could this have happened?"

we do have another odd California housing quirk tho... People will buy homes with water marks half way up the walls and be shocked when a flood wipes em out.
