That sure shows that the current misadministration was a true wonder in international dealings doesn't it.

Can you say Iran/Contra? (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

Not quite Rip, yet it still makes my point, so thank you.
Some republican dude in congress is outraged because we didn't punish another country for selling arms to Iran, when his man Reagan sold his *own* country's arms to Iran.

You forgot to add: "In order to get his OWN countrymen released from Iran..." (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

Oddly, this is something I don't have too much trouble with in concept, as it is done in National Security interests. That it was inexpertly conducted, well, that is another matter.
It does prove my previous point; someone that lies obvious lies right to your face will certainly go behind your back to do what he wants.
-
Lol Rip, can you possibly dig yerself into a deeper hole on this?
Iran-Contra was Reagan selling arms to Iran to raise money for his private war down in the southern hemisphere.
Your getting it confused with what's come to be known as "arms for hostages", yet *another* deal by Reagan to provide arms to Iran, this time 7 years earlier. The result being the release of all the hostages on (suprise!) Reagan's innaugeration day.
-
And gee I wonder who Reagan's right hand man was on all of this? Maybe a former spook and TBF pilot? (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)
Don't forget the BILLIONS of dollars that the Reagan/Bush regime spent to help build Saddam's war machine.
Then they took all the credit for destroying what they built in the Gulf War. The irony was comical but it's hard to laugh with 100,000 plus dead. (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/frown.gif)

Oh indeed Funked.
Bill Casey and George Bush met with the Iranian Prime Minister in Paris in October 1980, only weeks before the election and with Carter having a slight lead over Reagan. Part of the deal cut between the Reagan team and Iran was to provide military weapons which Iran desperately needed in its war with Iraq.
As it turned out (or because of that?), the 52 American hostages remained captive in Teheran. Carter's popularity continued to plummet, enabling Reagan to be elected in November. The hostages were returned at 12 o'clock noon on January 21, 1981 when Reagan was inaugurated.

Ah! Negra Modello and Bratwurst!
Please do continue! Turn up the flames a bit..the brats are in need of more heat!
BTW, is this the proof we need to show Al's expertise in foreign affairs?
LOL!
The US should be prevented from making foreign policy decisions anywhere in the world. A man's got to know his limitations and we're just not very good at it.
We keep thinking that people are basically good and will try to do the right thing. No matter how many times we get smacked in the face with the cold salmon of reality, we keep on believing.
That's why I say "bring all the US troops home." Clearly, our politicians don't know WTF they are doing. (ANY of them...regardless of party)

Hehe
Dammit Toad I'm *trying* to give ya a show here, what with ya havin' to run out and get the brats and all... but I aint gettin' nuthin. People! - I can't work like this! (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)
Er... and I wasn't aware this thread was about "proving Gore's expertise in foreign affairs". I suppose though, if you were in his position, ya woulda called an emergency security briefing to the entire congress, perhaps even engaged in a televised address from the Oval office, and proposed that we either test Putin's mettle by declaring an all encompassing embargo/blockade on Russia, repleat with a no fly zone, the whole nine yards... or started lobbing ord on both the Russians and Iran, solving both those pesky problems in one tidy package (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)
Actually, it *is* a good question.
But first... ferget the crap about Gore - last time I checked Bill was still the commander in chief. You think Bill relenquished his job to Gore WRT foreign policy or something? You and I both know why Gore was the focus of this. Ah well, this is the folly of gettin' yer information from Fox News (Fox News!!). These people are the same bunch of geniuses that bring you such things as "When senile pets attack their owners!"....or.... "When magic tricks go very, very wrong". Puhlease. But anyways...
Back to the question. Russia (who's economy is in tatters, who's top dog is text-book KGB era... a complete X-factor) is selling arms to Iran.
You condemn "Gore"? Ball is in yer court then. How would *you* approach this?
-
zzzzzzzzzz........ Nuthin'.
So quick to condemn, so short of answers.
And I recognize one or two names here that were quick to express their immediate shock/dismay/outrage at the (bulltoejam) story posted by Dago of how Clinton was supposed to be riding into Vietnam on some battleship with the US flag hung below Vietnam's.
That thread got real silent in a hurry also.
Such a shame, ya must be thinking. You no doubt actually beleived you had the Democratic equivelant of Iran-Contra on yer hands here. ("THIS close!"). Lets see how big this story gets. Take my advice tho, do not hold yer breath. Rush will no doubt pick up the ball and run fer the goal line for all it's bloody well worth... but that's about it. ("damn those slippery bastards!")

Gee, I promised myself I was going to stay out of this one!
Nash, some people sleep between 10:10 and 03:14, be patient.
After a thorough re-read of the news article, I do find a few nuggets of humor/interest.
The 1995 agreement was secretly forged by Vice President Al Gore and then Prime Minister Viktor Chernomyrdin.
This raises an eyebrow but it may be just the reporting. This agreement may have been a "secret" but I'd hope SOMEONE in Congress was advised. That's the way our system is supposed to work; if it was a "secret" held totally in the Executive Branch, I'll wager some laws were broken here. No data, though.
The agreement maintained that the U.S would not punish Russia for its arms sales to Iran if Russia agreed to stop selling arms by Dec. 31, 1999
...many said they were furious with Gore for sidestepping the legislature, particularly since Gore wrote the 1992 law that said any country that sold arms to Iran would be sanctioned.
A little irony here, n'est pas? Gore wrote the law and then negotiates the agreement that totally ignores said law? Gotta love that one!! (Take a deep breath, Nash. Just shows he a typical, worthless, lying politician, no better or worse than the average Dubya.)
It highlights the flimsiness of the deal in the first place. These were naive agreements at the outset because they exchanged something of immediate value to the Russians only for a promise. We've lost in the short run and we've lost in the long run.
Exactly why I said "Friends don't let Americans do Foreign Policy".
Our politicians can be cheaply bought, they have no principle, the people exercise no oversight of them and they don't understand "Realpolitik" despite Henry K's heavy-handed, clumsy attempts to show and explain it to them. What's worse is that they're stupid.
Another agreement allowed Russia to transfer nuclear technology.
THERE'S a brilliant piece of Foreign Policy work. Let's give Iran a reactor! Guess what you can make with a functioning reactor? (Besides electric power.) Not that it matters, since we've let China in on how to make our warheads and improved their missile guidance packages. Wait...they probably promised not to pass on the info, so we're OK there. (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)
Maybe they still have those old '50s bomb shelter plans on the internet! Note to self: Find secluded, steep sided valley in Northern Rockies and build small cabin. Move there soon. (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)

It occurs to me while reading your reply that without also parsing that flimsy article and applying anecdotal repartee, I could say it no better than you. Bravo and <S>. I've heard something to the effect of: 'examining politics is much like watching sausage get made'. Which reminds me, your bratwurst looks like it's done. Enjoy - I think I'll join ya.
---edit---
Perhaps the two parties should have forged a bipartisan agreement all those years ago to give Kissinger some kind of tenure in the Whitehouse...
