Title: i love this country
Post by: JB88 on June 04, 2005, 12:14:53 AM
and i will be damned if i think that what we are doing and the direction that we are heading is either healthy, decent or for that matter christian.

there are so many changes happening that we cant even keep up with them.

national id's passed.

patriot act.

bankrupcy protection- gone.  (this by a puppet who drove his own business to the ground and got bailed out by daddy's rich saudi friends)

attacks on the judicial branch and legislation against it which will castrate it and its ability to uphold our freedoms, protect us from tyranny and defend our constitution.

justifying torture.

ignoring the rights of sovereign nations.

funny.  im starting to feel like we want to be THEM.

it makes my skin crawl.

truly.

Exactly how has your life changed due to all this oppression?

What is it you can no longer do that you could do before?

I refuse to allow such ignorance to be lumped in with "us".

Like everything else there are proud things in our nation's path and some less than proud things.

That you view it as all negative speaks more of you than the nation.

minor in armchair psychology too?

neato.

leave it to the "educated" to swing it back to tacks right?

no.  sorry.  but in this case i dont think that you will find me all that shamed by my impressions.

as i say, i love my country and i think that it is turning into a holy hell of a mess.

and that makes me sad.

so yes.  i guess that does speak of me.

as do yours words reflect you.

I know a guy that filed bankrupcy last week.  The airlines do it all the time?

Exactly what are not protected against?

Certainly an opinion you are entitled to voice.

Excellent! We agree.

Now, other than voicing a personally held opinion of your nation's path, what ACTUAL changes in your life have these new laws wrought? What do you actually have to DO that is different now? How are you inhibited from doing something you did before?

No, you really haven't.

Well, unless you are saying that the ONLY thing that has changed in your life due to this TERRIBLE OPPRESSION is that you no longer view your country's path in the same way. IE: Your opinion of your country has changed.

That's IT? Guess we are indeed doomed. Of course, not everyone shares that opinion, so maybe we'll be OK afterall.

Good to know the rest of your daily life hasn't changed a lick. Suggests the oppression is lighter than a feather.

Nash... it isn't really "new".

Just a different direction, one of many.

Read a lot of Native American stuff on spiritualism and origins too. Amongst others.

Funny, they all say the same thing if you zoom out. Neh?

A couple of things strike me as odd about the pres as well. Most of our presidents employed a good speach writer, Yet the Bushmaster speeches do not have the ring of a professional, and the type of vernacular errors (that he is famous for) sound just like the type that are typical of the technically illiterate.  I doubt that he can read at a high school level.  There is also matter of his C average, which is very low considering the amount of money his father has, and yes, grades can be bought at any school.  I payed my way through college tutoring rich kids (many of whom could not read at all), and just the fact that I was selected as a tutor says volumes, as my own ability to write is abit sucko with a touch of craptastic thrown in.  I just forgot what I was writing about.

I see many things in Buddhism.

They are not some Beatles "love thy brother" ideal.

Intention? Absolutely. But that is but a small part. Almost a given.

You "skimmed it." I really suggest not doing that.

Well, it was long ago, I admit. Before the Native American phase even.

But clipping to save time here:

Quote
The eight factors of the noble eightfold path are: Right Understanding, Right Thought, Right Speech, Right Action, Right Livelihood, Right Effort, Right Mindfulness and Right Concentration.

You don't see just about every religion's precepts in there? Certainly it's what Dyer talks about with "intention".

And the "moral code"

Quote
to abstain from harming living beings

to abstain from taking what is not given

to abstain from sexual misconduct

to abstain from false speech

to abstain from intoxicating drugs or drink

Where have we seen those before, eh?

Come, Nash... you have to acknowledge many common elements, especially in the macro view.

Of course I do. Why would I deny that? I'm not. This isn't an argument.

But it's a mistake to recognize some common traits and dismiss their exploration as being more of the same.

Explore.

More.

the native american religions would be closer to (japanese) shintoism, i think, than to buddhism.

but then again, i know nothing.

(thats socratic  btw)
Title: i love this country
Post by: Toad on June 04, 2005, 01:26:47 AM
I think the point is that in the macro they all say basically the same thing.

I would call that a "clue".  ;)

Now, will I revisit them? I dunno. Depends on where one thought leads the next. I might go for Cave Dweller belief systems next... the closer you get to the beginning, ya know.......  ;)

But really, I do apologize for the hijack. If we wish to continue we should start another thread.

After all this one is dedicated to angst and we're really not in that mode, are we?

Post by: JB88 on June 04, 2005, 01:37:14 AM
i disagree, but perhaps you might define what that same "thing" is for me?

are you refferring to the fact that all religions share the same version of the afterlife or to the adherence to dogma?

perhaps you were refferring to reincarnation then?  do all of those religions on a macro level do this?

hm.

ok.  but what about the whole ONE god thingy?

that is certainly consistant with eastern mysticism and philosophy and the catholic church, oh wait...no it isnt.

hm.

wait.  perhaps it is love thy neighbor.

funny thing is...people think that when you speak of tao that you are speaking of good.

that when you speak of the buddha that you are neccessarilly invoking light.

i suppose that there is some commonality between "not having excessive sexual urges" and chastity.

ok.  thats good.

and maybe even islam and christianity with the package deals that offer virgin love slaves (which is good) or the right hand of god (which is good too) for being a martyr.  thats pretty close.

it is easy to make simple statements based upon false logic or wishful thinking.

or skimming for that matter.

but thats just it.  and that's what freedom means to me.  the right to chose for myself without a state committee doing it for me.

im a big boy.  ill figure it out for myself thanks.

peace out brother.

Hey, good post.

Kinda bothers me that Toad is embarking on a spiritual path and at the same time trying to discount or dismiss away much of it due to some commonality. I mean, if you're doing that... just hang it up. It's not going to get ya anywhere. You're in it for the wrong reasons.

Toad, correct me if I'm wrong.... but you've had some recent health problems. Your posts since then have hinted at spirituality. You even asked Seagoon for guidance in a recent post. And now you're reading Dyer.

I appreciate that you've looked into it in the past, but I'm also taking a stab at it by saying that your curiousity has picked up a certain amount of speed very recently.

Don't start acting like the expert here. If you're serious, don't start dissecting it. It's what they do. Won't help you.

Sorry no doubt you will all fell terribly pissed off that I dare to open my mouth on a subject about America but hey.

I don't know the details but it seems to me JB is disturbed because he acualy is concerned about how he, as an American and his nation and fellows, are percieved in the wider world and by others as a result of these Legislative and Government actions.
It Also seems that he is concerned how these actions might affect his fellow citizens regardless of how they directly impinge upon himself.

This surely is admirable. Whether you agree or not with his fear. The fact that he thinks beyond his own little world and life. Hats off to you.

Toad you came right back with

"Exactly how has your life changed due to all this oppression?
What is it you can no longer do that you could do before?"

Sorry but that indicates to me you think only in terms of how things affect you yourself and thats all that matters. That my freinds is how many of us now view your nation. Full of people who care nothing for others as long as they are OK or us others are doing what you think is right.

Now I know that is not neccesarily the case but neverthelss that is the not so admirable message we are getting. You might one day think it wise to stop berating us and examione why that is so.

Then again you will probably come back at me with with the usual bug off you Amerihater nyah nyah not listening crap.

Have you even read the new Bankrupcy law amendments? If not you should if your going to complain about them....
Is it the fact that amending the corporate loopholes so business's couldn't hide pre filing laundering to hide company assets that worries you...
Or could it be the amendments that limit the abuse holes in the previous bankruptcy laws that allowed people to play the system and never have to pay back cc debt after filing, or even allowed them to continue to spend and acquire cc's further ringing up debt knowing they could never pay it back?

Its a Liberal thing right...  Once filing for bankruptcy one should be forgiven totally for all debts. Kind of like a Get out of financial hotwater monopoly yellow ticket..

The previous laws needed some rewriting to stop the players of the game not unlike a software game where a few figured out how to game a hole in the game...

we have allways had debtors prisons..  you can easily go to jail for owing money to the IRS or child support/allimony.

Any court ordered fine that is not paid will result in a warrant for your arrest.

I don't think we need a patriot act but have seen nothing in it (so far) that is over the top or threatens me.

The only way to have the approval of other countries is to let them do our voting for us and then... we will have the approval of only that country.

88 is an artist... he knows things the rest of can't possibly understand... he takes old junk and makes dioramas that show us that old junk can be turned into a diorama.   He is sensitive and caring as proved by the fact that... well... he cares and.... skyprancer likes him darn it!

Sometimes the system is abused.

Take this guy for example.. works 22 years on a job. No health plan (company pulled it, too expensive), no 401k, no retirement plan. Guy has minamal life insurance.

He's got a wife, kids, house, 35k a year job. wife works too. 28k a year. over the course of 22 years, he's got a mortgage; a second, about 15k in cc debt.

He gets laid off. then he gets sick.. stress.. he wife leaves him, no money. She rapes him for the house, alimony, child support.

Now he's up to his bellybutton in debt.. no income, no health plan, a massive health care bill, alimony, child support bills.

The guy files bankruptcy.

I hate dickwads like this.. abusing the system. The rat bastard should arrange an accident to kill himself so his insurance pays off his debt.

Why should he not have to pay his CC debt? Why is he not responsible?  Maybe he lived beyond his means on his CC's.  Why is he not responsible?

Additionally, the new laws do not prevent guys like this from filing BK so before you post more silly gibberish you might want to consider who the new laws are affecting.

only big differance in bankruptcy law is if you have asssets/income to repay part of debt in 6 years you have to file chapter 13 instead of chapter 7 (total debt forgivness).

depending on your assests/income people filing 13 repay about 20% of debt.

the bankruptcy judge will decide if you have to file 13 or 7, before it was your lawyer who decided that.

Sick?  Laid off?   Why would either of these excuse me from my finanacial responsibilities?

Oh gosh, I got sick and was in the hospital.  Sorry Mr. creditor, even though it's not your fault I got sick, I'm not going to pay my 5k credit card debt which I used to buy the plasma screen TV in my living room.  Oh, by the way, I get to keep the TV.

Why?  Why shouldn't people be responsible?

Gawd, I agree with Steve on something!    Now that's a pleasant surprise-- have a drink on me.

Why do you supposed bankers keep lending The Donald money?
Its money that comes out of OUR pockets, too, when he inevitably goes belly up, doesn't it?

From what I know of the bankruptcy reform, it seems reasonable.   But I don't doubt there are loopholes that the wealthy will be able to exploit.   Let's just watch.

they should be.

but that includes corporations as well doesnt it steve?

what about the credit card companies that are preying on 18 year olds who are green in the world and geeked about that new 5k credit limit that they just got when they shipped off to college...or the guy who gets laid off and cant pay his bills because captain jerko the selfish in the drivers seat needs a multimillion dollar raise.

corporations spend millions if not billions (coke) a year doing everything that they can to get money out of pockets.  its seduction.

there needs to be some give and take here.

when a person declares bankrupcy (if they are not donald trump) they are penalized, but the penalty is survivable and has a clear ending.

obviously, these are life lessons...fine...
but what bothers me is the double standard.

and there is alot of that going around.

Don't give me that sappy "preying on" crap.  I went through the credit card blitz ion college just like every collegian does.  If the student isn't smart enough to avoid getting into debt, he/she should take responsibility for his/her actions.

Excellent point.  An imaginary product is made from recycled humans, therefore...  wait ...uh... I guess you didn't have a point and were just going for the humor.

My point was because corporations are groups of people, rights held by corporations are rights held by people.

Your complaint that bankruptcy laws are different for 'groups of people' than for individuals seems strange to me because there is a whole book of laws relating to 'groups of people'.

If bankruptcy law were singled out as a shining example of fairness when bookkeeping and tax law are different for 'groups of people' than they are for individuals, that would seem inconsistant.

you know, as long as the first and last letters of each word are the right ones, your brain will recognize the word regardless of how you misplace the letters in the middle.

How about that black dude who has been just released after spending 30 years in jail for stealing a black-and-white TV-set ($140.) ? He should had filed for bankrupcy at the time ! But it's O'key, he can do it now. P.S. American people are being criminalized and jailed for non-existent crimes, put in jail for petty crimes or unpaid child-support etc. Being a foreigner in this great country I can see much more than the majority of US citizens are able to see. And what I see I saw before in the last but one totalitarian empire I lived in. :(

Not exactly sure what you're getting at here.  I'm sorry if I missed your point.

Why does the dude have to be black?  Good news for this fellow though.  After spending 30 years in prison, any deragatory credit reporting would have fallen off; he has a clean slate.
