Title: Combat Theater - Time of Aces
Post by: Eagler on June 06, 2005, 07:42:43 AM
Time of Aces - 7th of October 1944

October was a pivotal month for the air campaign on Guadalcanal. It was a time when the men who had arrived in August were clearly at the end of their endurance, for sickness and fatigue hit them after they had survived Japanese bullets. However, new squadrons and crews were arriving, among them VMF-121, led by Major Leonard K. "Duke" Davis. His executive officer, Captain Joseph J. Foss, would soon make a name for himself. Other veterans of the campaign had not stayed idle. Major Smith of VMF-223 had taken his squadron up on 2 October against a raid by Japanese bombers and fighters. The Zero escorts dove on the climbing Navy and Marine Wildcats, quickly shooting down two fighters from VMF-223. Smith exited a cloud to confront three Zeros. He blasted a fighter into a ball of flame. However, the two remaining Zeros got on his tail and peppered the struggling little blue-gray F6F with cannon and machine gun fire. Listening to a repaired radio from a damaged SBD back at Guadalcanal, the crews of Dennis Byrd's VMSB-232 heard Captain Carl call to his skipper. "John, you've got a Zero on your tail!" "I know, I know," Smith replied, "shoot the SOB if you can!" Then all was silence

That looks like a very good CT set up.  Now if anyone will actually show up for it, I plan to give it a go if I find anyone there.

Looks pretty good to me too. Personally don't like the 'short icon range' but other than that... Will try to drop in Eagler.

Must be a "what-if" set up because the major air battles at Guadalcanal took place in Oct/Nov of 1942. However, this is certainly a late 1944 plane set.

My regards,

Yep, its more for a good plane match up than for historical purposes.

Icon range doesn't really mean too much when you know the only three aircraft the other side can use. I can see how it would be a pain in the MA though :)

This is a really great matchup by 68KO.  Those of you who have even the vaguest itch for axis v. allies should try it.

Alot of fun this set up is.

One thing it does lack in my humble opinion is the Fm2. Altho its fun to turn n' fight zeeks with an F6. Chances are its a losing battle. Cherry pickin aint no fun.

If we could get the Fm2 in there that would be just jim dandy. :)

FM2 wouldn't be a bad idea at all. I have to admit, though, that not having it has forced me to learn how to fly the hogs on the deck which, to my surprise, is more possible than I previously thought. Still, chances are the zekes will get the best of me.

Decided have I, before the council has...

On carriers she carries, the FM2.  Young master travel to CV to take the FM2 you must.

May for allied force be with you.

I had a blast flying this setup. I flew Japanese planes to balance the sides ... would have prefered the "blue" planes, but had much fun nevertheless.

I did learn that Jamusta + F6F = deadly ... very deadly.

Next time this comes around, let the FM2 or even the F4F take off from the fields. Zeke vs FM2 will generate some nice fights. As Eagler pointed out ... the auto CV ack would suck.

the Dunkirk setup is great fun to..

though some worry about the 110 unbalancing the setup, I do not think enough of them show up at any given time to skew the advantage over to axis

109e v spit1/hurri1 is very close matchup and should not be missed :)
