Watched and rewatched and rewatched The Matrix.
True masterpiece. It has sublte references placed in it everywhere from biblical passages to greek mythology. Also asks a profound question that really could be dealt with a bit deeper. Stunning effects. the best fight scenes I've seen in eons. A story that is not totally predictable at first - when I saw the Latex babe Of My Dreams jump through the window like she was a missile at first i thought "bah not possible" - then got the explanation later.
Oh man. What a flick. It rules. So does DivX.
Why can't Hollywood make more of films like this, instead of the normal predictable no brain nonsense?
Sheeit.

Heh, I thought it was cheesy and predictable, with good fight scenes.
-
Heh, I am cool.
-
That film put me to sleep, literally.
-
I will forever hold a grudge against that film, solely because of all the "d00dz" who use "NEO" as their name now

Hmmm. You know the bit where they're uploading Keanu with loadsa different martial art programs? They start with Ju-Jitsu, Karate, Kung Fu, blah, blah, blah.
Well they may have uploaded karate, Ju-Jitsu, Tae Kwon Do, etc, but in all the fight scenes everyone was doing Lao Gar (spelling?) Kung Fu and nothing else. I saw zero moves from any of the other martial arts they supposedly uploaded. What was the point?

Aw come on. You guys miss *all* thereferences.
Maybe you yanks are dumb after all.
Stuff like Air Force One can really make me pissy - F-15's flying with full burners behind a 747 for hours without overtaking it or running outta fuel, a Combat D00d president that's soo good - and the yanks lap it up.
The Matrix makes little claim to the realism department like that. Or very few.
It asks *the* epistemologic question - what's real, how can one decide.
But Red Dwarf (Brit sitcom) had VR rightly defined in the episode "Better Than Life". When asked whether one could die in RL, the response was "yes. You are as dead as you think you are" (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif).
Oh well.
Oh come to think lof it, Fight Club was actually quite good too. And Aliens. Cannot think of any more real good flicks except Terminator 1 and the Conan series. Wait a minute; Willow was damned good too.
The Matrix has you. You guys are just being force fed beliefs.

The plot in Matrix is nothing that hasn't been completely worn out in an endless stream of sci-fi "cyberpunk" novels that have been around since I was a youngster. Yawn.
You watched Air Force One? Ewwwww...

lol Naso (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif) They have hot-dogs too, dontchaknow...
The only thing good about the Matrix was the special effects. It's also a gun-fetishist's wet dream.
The story has been done a million times, the character's are pretentious bi-dimensional characatures and Keanu Reeves is a tit.
I enjoyed I though. (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif) Anne Marie Foss?

If you guys want to see a good movie, better, at least IMHO than any of the movies mentioned here, I recommend renting "Boondock Saints." This is a very good movie.

Dear Santa,
I feel I must take issue with your assumption that Americans are in some way...'dumb'.
I'd like to point out some American intellectual heavy-weights, namely Mark Twain, Joseph Heller, Norman Mailer and George W. Bush. You'd be hard pressed to find individuals of their literary calibre anywhere else in the world.
Yours Sincerely,

The "Matrix" follows the standard hero motif seen in myths handed down throughout the ages: that of the hero namely "YOU" overcoming the many layers of societal programming to obtain the ultimate goal of realizing your true self.
I took this film to be a metaphor for the current state of western culture: that of media-fed cattle. In the case of the "Matrix" the population is quite literally "media-fed".
I enjoyed the many "Eastern" references made in the film though I could be reading more into this film than was intended. (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)
If you like this kind of sci-fi I recommend "The 13th Floor" which came out last year.
-
I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed the Matrix and have seen it numerous times. If nothing else it should make you think somewhat about our state of affairs.
13th Floor was another good movie for those who like the sci-fi type (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

I took this film as the Capricorn One scenario taken to it's absolute limit and just enjoyed the effects and the babe (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif). Us, simple folk, we do that sometimes

Wife: "Dave.. the first 5 minutes of The Matrix is on"
Me: <-Runs into living room
My favorite part was the opening scene. The girl made the movie. The combination of special efects and a semi decent dialog made it possible to overcome the thesbian shortcomings of the lead. I liked it.
Sure the scene in the lobby was a bit overdone, but the very opening of it when neo first opened his coat was hilarious.
And.. tell me that Mr. Smith was not one of the more interesting characters you've seen. He stole virtually every scene he was in.
One downside to the film was noted above. "Neo" and "Morpheus" are names I'd rather not see again in my on-line gaming life. Another is the introduction to the super-slow-mo hanging in the air multiple kick shot. I loved it when I saw it in the Matrix, because they actually justified the actions with some explanation. When I see it in a movie like "Charlies Angels" I can't help but think how canned 99% of all movies are these days. Ah... but Lucy Liu (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)

Lynx, I bet you watched Capricorn One 20 years ago in a Soviet cinema (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif) I had a chance to see it a year ago - funny feeling...
Matrix is good, but looks like a Philip K. Dick abridged for high school (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif) I was stunned when I gave "Ubik" and other PKD books to a very religious woman. She found so many Christian things there - I had to admit that she was right and I just didn't look at PKD from that point of view...

Yeah, SOB, but Dr Who is actually good. (speaking of BBCAmerica, I wish they'd start showing the Young Ones, now there is a good show).
If you want to see true artistry, you'll have to attend the First Annual Funked and Fatty Sergio Leone Film Festival(tm).

Philip K who? (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif) Having been spoiled rotten by CJ Cherryh I find it difficult now to get passed first few pages of most SF books. Most just do not respect the intelligence of a reader...

Young Ones wasn't that good. It was a comedy/sitcom with a monty-python-lite sense of humour (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)
The Matrix was great, but was based on a comic. Little more needs to be said on how much you should read into it. (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)
I gotta say I prefer sci-fi that doesn't just use technology as a justification for big guns and action. Give me Blade Runner or Silent Running over the Universal Soldier generation of movies anyday.

Hehe, Lynx, I saw it in 1980, also in a DK, "Vostochniy" near Moscow (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif) That movie impressed me much more than Matrix, I was 8 years old (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)
You haven't read Philip Dick!? IMHO he's one of the greatest writers of XX century. Get a copy of "Ubik" and "A Man in the High Castle" ASAP!
Thank you for mentioning "Capricorn One"! I finaly understood what is behind Viktor Pelevin's "Omon Ra"!
If you haven't read Pelevin too - here are the links for his books in Russian:
http://www.lib.ru/PELEWIN/ (http://www.lib.ru/PELEWIN/)
There is one English translation too:
http://www.lib.ru/PELEWIN/hermit.txt (http://www.lib.ru/PELEWIN/hermit.txt) - one of his best stories.
Pelevin is a Russian PKD, also playing with reality. His "Prince of Gosplan" describes a man buried in a computer game, almost as we are now, and he wrote it in 1990!
Many Pelevin's books can be found at Amazon, all worth reading.
I heard that he is quite popular in Germany now, is it true?

Mathman Pleeeeeeeese tell me that you are joking about the Boondock saints. That is quite possibly the worst movie that I have ever seen, and I like Willem Dafoe! Within the first 7 minutes I couldnt believe I had rented it. We only kept watching it to see how bad it could get, and let me tell you, it got worse! You must have been kidding when you suggested that. Pretty funny suggestion (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

If you want a couple of movies with theatrical merit, check out 2001: A Space Odessy, and Kelly's Heroes.
2001 is just a great Sci-Fi movie that everyone's seen before...same as Kelly's Heroes. The link that bounds them? Simple. They can be viewed in so many ways.
Sure, you caught the space exploration thingy stuff, the dangers of technology, and the influenece of extraterrestrial life the first couple of times but there's alot more going on then that.
And Kelly's Heroes, well, sure it's funny, and there's lessons on greed (plus some pretty damn accurate portrayals of WWII equipment, although I STILL dunno what kind of plane attacked them on the hill and destroyed the half tracks) But again there's alot more going on then that. If Crapgame's story on how Kelly got busted, didn't tip ya off, there's alot of betrayal vs morality stuff going on. It's bluntly put out there, but the comdey kind of draws away from it. There's also considerable anti-war stuff going on too (Odd Ball and the tank crews is the most obvious) dealing with Vietnam.
Seems like everytime I watch those two I find something new. Thats what so bad about The Matrix...you catch nearly everything the first go round.
-
I love The Matrix.Saw it on the cinema, Have it on video, and can't wait for the second and third parts.

`What Dreams May Come` is the last movie I saw that deserved to be on screen.
Im fed up with all the crap Hollywood pumps out just to get money. its really pathetic.
Matrix plain sucked. Good FX though (but storytelling.. yuck. Its like saying Rosseanne will be on Baywatch one of these days).
Highlight of Matrix : `Tastes like chicken` explanation. (LOL).

Tac, the Matrix has you and is feeding your brain with such nonsensical input.
Too late for you; we cannot liberate you. You are now an enemy.
