Man screw that, I hate arachanids. I was scared for life when my sister took me to see Arachnaphobia on opening day. I was just a little kid, now I freak out when I see spiders in my house.

Up here in IL though, we don't get Black Widows, we do get the nasty Wolf Spiders that drive SUVs and some ugly Banana Spiders that hang out in trees and then jump down every now and then at night.

I'm never having ANY trees near my house when I get my own.

As long as they aren't in your home you should consider yourself lucky.  Do what senna said and take some WD-40 and a lighter.

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to find out as many ways to kill these nusances as possible.

Good luck Steve:aok

Much safer and less toxic way to kill them is with spray cleaners. They'll suffocate/drown then you can clean up after with what you sprayed.
It's a good example to any young ones around. Rather see them spraying Tuff Stuff/409/etc rather than a can of RAID or any aerosol w/a lighter.
Kids emulate what they see the adults do regardless what the adults say.

steve - your pic links appear to be broken - would like to see though. oh wait - it's there now.

I nearly picked up a scorp just like that one. It was resting in a handbasin at a campsite. It was dark (no electricity) and just at the right moment, a guy walked in with a lantern which... saved my day!

Mud daubers will take care of the widows.  I remember I climbed up in an old deer stand on stilts we were repairing, and seeing lots of tangled webs underneath it.  Climbed in and noticed a mud dauber's nest that was one single tube from the floor to the ceiling.  Broke it open and about 1000 dead widows dropped out (though I thought I may have seen a couple moving ones.)

Got out of there fast.:)   Btw mud daubers aren't dangerous to humans and don't sting.  They're the slender black/brown wasps kinda resembling small dragonflies with a bulbous tail.  Dunno if they can survive in Arizona climate though.

I used to live in a house that must have been built on scorpion holy ground. Was sitting in my chair one night reading a book wearing a pair of jeans. I felt a little itch near my crotch and went to scratch it. BAM!!!

I levitated about 3 feet out of my chair and hit the floor trying to take my jeans off like Jenna Jameson was lying in bed naked waiting for me.

BAM!! BAM!!! BAM!!! BAM!!!!

By the time I got them off the little #@*%'er stung me 13 times starting about 2 inches from my nads and running down to my knee. Unfortunately I crushed him getting my jeans off and was unable to torture the #&@%'er.

What is it like when they sting? like a wasp or worse?

It really depends on the type of scorpion. The ones we have around here look like the one in Steve's pic. They are like a bee or hornet sting. The black ones are much, much worse and have been known to kill.

Big claws - very little poison, small claws - LOTS of posion, the venom is protein based and is effected by heat - soooo if you get stung immerse the afflicted item in ....wait for it, boiling water, this will reduce the effectiveness of the venom - apparently in some cases the sting is so painful you don't notice the boiling water.

Killing insects can be done by spraying them with a strong detergent - apparently they have a waxy surface on their bodies which when removed by detergent kills them.

I'm not sure if these are true however experimental analysis should offer results - let us know how it turns out.

Do the stings  itch bad for several days RPM?  Seems that would be the worst part.  Also, did it have any other serious effects than a bee sting?

Fire ants are the worst thing that can bite around here, and they itch like a yellow jacket (hornet) sting for at least a week, sometimes two weeks.  You'll sctatch yourself raw it itches so much.  Bad thing about it is, it feels good to scratch and that makes it worse.

Let's just say the stock of hydrocortasone and aloe vera manufacturer's went way up for about a week. It was much, much worse than a fire ant bite. Luckily, he was running out of venom the last few stings.
I was working as a truck driver at the time and wearing pants to work was torture, bouncing in an air ride seat 12 hours a day.

Throw an empty spray can in a campfire and it will go off spreading glowing embers 20 feet out in the woods.
