But that's under a "peacetime" scenario.  It's really unknown what could have happened, like it is in all "what if" scenarios.

Thanks, I've been thinking about it and I think it would have been fantastic for the US.  Don't have to tie up all those resources one upping the USSR in space, or get involved with bush wars all over the globe.  The US could go back to being more or less isolationist and concentrating on gaining influence in regions that it is has a market interest in as opposed to political.  Don't have to pay for such a big military, less taxes and more money for industry that there is a demand for.  Cuba turning commie probably doesn't happen, heck maybe same with Vietnam and Korea.  China is isolated, probably would have been great all around.

As someone pointed out, it probably wouldn't have been the US vs USSR. It would likely have been the Western Allies + Germany against the USSR.

The key IMO opinion would have been supply. If you concentrate against transportation and effectively destroy that, no army can fight.

The "transportation plan" was the most effective part of the entire bombing campaign. IIRC, that's what the bombing survey said. Unfortunately, it wasn't tried until almost the end.

1948 early 49 is when it would have to happen.  I can't see the western allies signing up for another war in Europe, remember Churhill is out of office and they are rebuilding their war torn countries.  But if NATO doesn't form than they can pausible deniablity for the US nuking Russia.

Perhaps, I would try to wipe out the government with a massive sneak nuke attack.  Level all the big cities, hit the oil fields.  As far as I know Russia production was pretty spread out, so that would be very difficult to take out.  With out having a total conventional war.  Then your in another meat grinder which no one wants.  But if Russia's government and major cities are gone, who knows.



PS:  Yeager, that's not what I'm saying at all.
