Title: Setup for June 10
Post by: Oldman731 on June 09, 2005, 08:36:47 PM
Operation Dynamo - May 27 through June 4, 1940

Hitler’s blitzkrieg attack through the Ardennes has trapped the British Expeditionary Force and a sizeable portion of the French Army at the Channel port of Dunkirk.  The Germans hesitate to commit their vaunted but exhausted panzer divisions to an unsupported assault through the marshy terrain around the city.  Goering boasts that his Luftwaffe alone can finish the job.

Meanwhile, on the night of May 27, a ragtag rescue fleet sets sail from England, in a desperate attempt to bring the boys home.

This week’s setup attempts to reproduce the setting for the Dunkirk evacuation.  For lack of a port on the map, A46 (aircraft disabled) has become the town of Dunkirk.  The designer’s intent is to have both sides focusing their efforts here, as the RAF attempts to prevent the Luftwaffe from bombing the long lines of soldiers patiently waiting on the beach.  German bomber players are encouraged to bomb the town flat - over and over again.  Regeneration time has been radically reduced so that the buildings should promptly spring back to life.  (Consider this a useful method of building up CT perk points, if there should ever be an opportunity to use them.)  Aircraft have been disabled at the closest German bases, so that the RAF will not always be met with local German air superiority.  There are no British bombers, because historically they were not important and because of the designer’s fear that they would be mis-employed to attack German fighter hangers.  There are no C47s or M3s or LVTs, because base capture is not part of this design.  All bases have field guns and M16s for antiaircraft defense (although auto-ack’s effectiveness has been reduced to half of the MA standard).  All bases are also equipped with M-8s, to roughly simulate 1940-era tanks, for those who wish to conduct GV operations in the Dunkirk area.  Even PT boats are enabled at ports, to represent the cockleshell rescue fleet.

If it all works, there is something for everyone.

It may not all work, however.  The designer is feeling his way through the intricacies of arena design.  Please post glitches, bugs, porkings, and any other comments on the AH CT BBS, and appropriate changes will be attempted.

British (Bishops)
Hurri I
Spit I
Field guns
M16
M-8
PT boats

German (Knights)
Me-109E
Me-110C
Ju-87
Ju-88
Field guns
M-16
M-8

Settings:
Fuel multiplier is 1.5.  Remember to take enough with you.
Hardness settings have not been altered, but regeneration time is .01 instead of 1.0.
Auto-ack is .5, one-half of the MA standard.
Visibility is 10 miles.
Minimum radar altitude is 500 feet.
Friendly collisions are disabled.
Killshooter is on.
Aircraft have been disabled at A46 (Dunkirk), and at A45, A46 and A47 (nearest German bases).  Please comply with the spirit of the setup, and don’t ferry planes into these fields.

Many thanks to Reschke for his historical research, and to all of the CT staff for helping me through this.

- Oldman

Legs that reach all the way to the ground, and brunettes!

Not sure if the carpet matches the curtains though, but hey...who really looks anyway!

Toad it's good to see you in the CT again.
Theres been a few guys that fly the 110 really well lately. They usually have been pretty thick during a BOB type setup. Prefering the 110 over the Emil.

anyone catch "Greatest Military Clashes" on the Military Channel last night?

It was about the spit and me109 matchup during BOB. Pretty good, it talked about the brit carb cutout & how the germans exploited it, and showed the damage difference btwn the brits mg rounds and the german cannon by actually firing the guns against metal targets setup to represent wings. Pretty much called the match-up a draw, leaving the winner to be determined by the pilot, not the plane.

the thing with this set up is the still remarkably poor performance of the MGFF armed planes.  it will be a hurri vs 110 fight with the luftwabbles endlessly boring and zooming.  I'll pass for another week, thanks.

I'll trade you 8 .303's for 2 MGFF 20mm's Storch. Is it a deal?

I enjoyed the CT last night. Absolutely. I should have taken a Tony though. Haven't flown the Ki-84 much though and started in it and stayed with it. Pretty capable aircraft but a Tony is more my style.

On the upcoming setup, I'm in rare agreement with Storch. I'll probably pass on this one simply due to the 110. I think it'll work out pretty much the way he paints it.

Personally, I have been unable to get my head to accept the clear contradiction of the historical record that the AH 110 represents. In the BoB, 110's were meat. Here, in BoB sets, they are nearly untouchable if flown carefully. Some would probably say "timidly".  ;)

It could be any one of several factors from the way they had to be flown in the war (mission orders) vs how they can be flown here.

In any event, in everyone of these sets that I've played, the 110 is the piece that doesn't fit the puzzle. For me anyway.

I'd love this set with 109's, hurris and spits. And I'll fly either side of that matchup with great pleasure. But with the 110's, as Storch lays it out, it's just not attracting me.

Sorry.

that said, then the 110's should be limited to select fields requiring longer fly times to a fight

Which would probably just mean they arrive at the area of engagement with an even greater altitude advantage, which makes them even more untouchable with a careful pilot at the controls. ;)

I'll probably peek in but it's all 110's vs the Brits it'll only be a quick peek.

I dont think it will be all 110s, atleast i hope not. We can tweak it if it gets too silly.

Have to agree.  In the historical role for BoB the 110s would only be bomber escort anyway, and we wont have the numbers to make them really useful in that role.  Simply flown as fighters, the cannons make them like flying tanks.  Dont leave them out entirely, but limit where they are available.

instead why not just always make every set up as allied and axis the B5N.   that should keep you crossdressing leg shavers very happy.  oh and don't forget to add lots of spitVs.  you guys will just never get it will you?

Umm, you're right Storch.  I dont get it.  Unless its a Pac setup (and even sometimes if it is) I fly the Axis planes in CT out of preference.  If the F4U is available, I fly it.  If not, I'll likely be in a Japanese or LW plane.  I see no problem with flying a 109E to fight Spit I's.  Sure, I'd rather have an F, but I'll fly the E.

I'm not trying to be a smartass, I just really dont understand your reasons for being upset with this.  I know the ballistics on the axis guns could use some tweaking, but I've learned to live with it until it can be fixed.

Title: First changes

I enabled German planes at A47 and A48.  Now the only German base without planes is A45.  Let me know how it works out.

LOL, I didnt read through the entire setup description until now. This is a great setup, I especially like the M8's in place of '40 era tanks, and the first two closest LW bases not having planes enabled. I also like the basic change of Dunkirk instead of the same old BoB, same map I know, but the different scenario is nice.

fly for a month as axis, start with this current gem then perhaps you'll get it.  besides what do you care the only person who flies the arena less than me now is you.

Great setup guys. The planes are very evenly matched.

You really get to see how the 109E's fuel injection was the big advantage back then over the carburated spit1's.

I had alot of fun last night. Good work.

As promised, I have enabled Hurri and Spit at Dunkirk (A46).

Also I reset evening and morning so that - hopefully - there won't be any night.

Let's see how it works now.

Just checked, English planes seem to be enabled there.

I also enabled German planes at all German bases.  Guess we can call it "Prelude to Dunkirk," or "Hey, We'd Better Get Ready to Evacuate Soon," or something like that.
