I would like to find out who were the "old" aces of AW and AH and continuing into AHII. Just the people who were there should reply to this. Basically I want to know who were the badarses. Some of these guys still play, so where appropriate, please give the handle they fly under now. I have only been playing 1 1/2 years so I dont know squat. By the way, when I say "aces" I mean the best dogfighters! :)
-
I started in AW in '93, HT and Pyro were top 5 guys back then. Other "top 10" guys of that time would be Twisted, DeadDuck, Wolfman, Rabid, Drum, and probably the best was Killer. Other than HT and Pyro, I dont think any of them are in AH.
-
I was #Dogg in AW. The rest were also in AW that are here now.
PK1
Murdr
#Kaz who fly's as AKKaz now.
Shawk
Coors
#Killz who fly's as AKKillz now
#hun Fly's as HUN now
#Dapup fly's as Dapup now
There many more. To many to list.

I started WB in 96, and AH on day one of beta 1 so many years ago. The first guy that really seemed to dominate was Mitsu, he’s still around, but I’m not sure of his handle. Torque was not too long after, he’s still around as well. I’m also not sure of his new handle. Then there’s Citabria, now Fester. I actually remember him from WB, I think I chatted and flew with him right after he started.

Dunno if I qualify as an "old" ace if an ace at all but I go back to about '97 in AW coming over to AH in 2K just before AW's demise. Lot of the guys in my squad, The Damned, also came over.

I started in 1972 flying one of these
(http://www.yoy.org/dareplane/images/justplane.jpg)
After being the scourge of my basement and finding no more challenge I took a 25 year hiatus and came back to online play.
In AW mainly as "Westy" for about 3 years and then from 1999 till recently I was Westy in AH.
But I stopped flying about a 18 months ago when I found that my vintage Mattel toy offered more of a fight and challenge than did the pork and auger dweebs in the MA did.
-
I was pretty good in AW. But between going to ww2ol and ruining my gameplay, having a slow computer, a joystick I hate, and just plain getting old and lazy in how I fly Im only mediocre in here.
BTW started AW in 96
-
Started back in AW in late '93 with DOS AW, took a few months off after getting my first Genie bill and started again when AW moved to AOHELL. Played in AW Classic until they pulled the plug on it and then moved to AW3 and finally to AH when EA pulled the plug on AW. Also played WB for a couple of years during this time, flying with the MOL.
Most of the members of the 479th FG were some of the top pilots in AW, guys like Ballz, Corn, Noamo, Tkor, REEMO and 7SON. For the most part, all of them made the move to AH but a few have taken some extended leave since then. Glad that I can be part of a squad that is full with so many kick bellybutton pilots.

Nevre played AW..but first online flight sim experience was Confirmed Kill beta.
Does that count?
P.S. sorry for multiple posts

Started AW in 97 I think. Recruited by the C HAWKS right away.
Went to Fighter Ace 2 for a few months then started C HAWKS in AH1 with a few of my old squaddies. We now have about 15 AW C HAWKS active in AH2.
I've been called many things, but never an ace ;)
P.S. Skyrock, how's your head?..:D
-
Started in AW in 96. Started the squad filled with the biggest bunch of augering dweebs in the game at the time. Better known as the Nomads.
Turns out some of em weren't too bad at flying, it was the landing that was the problem :)
Most moved on to other games, but there are a few still floating around under different names and different squads. Still dweebs at heart though :)

Never an ace

P.S. Skyrock, how's your head?..:D [/B][/QUOTE] 2days later and I still smell stale beer! Guess I better get up from computer and bathe. :D

I miss half time and hit bubbles. I miss being able to hold a typed conversation in the middle of a dog fight. I miss flying with a mouse. I miss atari. I miss two smoke stack factories. I miss kill macros. I miss 4 digit credit card bills. I miss the look of horror on my wife's face after seeing a 4 digit credit card bill.
I miss "2000 out, 1500, 1000, IN!" I miss bailing from 25k.
I miss signing on to Geni before 6pm just to see who the rich people are.
I miss most of the players - except wild thing. I always hated Wild Thing (in a good way) .
But most of the time I just miss - still. Cant hit the side of a barn:p

To continue...I'm old and shot more'n 5 guys down in my 12 year or so history so I barely qualify.:) As far as Damned still flying from the old days....
Fool, NB, LW, Dano, Rodan, Lugs (think he and Snowman are on a sabatical), hell, there's too many to name. I hear Ptero might be back up. Looking for JD to make his appearance one of these days. I saw Shark Bait (SB) fly last night....now that's old! :)
Not so DOS but still been around a pretty good time in AW (including thru aol beta) and killers all the same....Coach, Max, Goose. TC hmmmm again to many to name....
I think we came across from AW with around 72-76 members and more'n half of those were DOS killers and can still send yer family flowers after you get shot down....:)
Then again the Damned inhabit many online games....but most started in AW
-
I first flew in AW in 1988, was a dweeb at first like most, but got to be good later on. During the peak of my talent, I felt that I could go one-on-one with anyone in the game and be about equal. (Of course, that's my perspective! :) )
My handle was then (and still is) "Brooke", and my player number was 5965. After a bit, I did all of my flying in scenarios instead of the regular arenas. I dropped out of on-line flying about 1999, and have recently started to get back into it here as of about mid 2004.
One problem is that I can't remember when my peak flying years were. Was it 1990? 1993? The weird thing is that, while I'm missing GEnie logs for 1990 into 1991, I have a bunch of the others, and my name and tail number are nowhere in there. Creepy! I flew *a lot* at some point, like 4 hours a day. I'm guessing it then had to be 1990 or 1st part of 1991 until I got solely into scenarios or being a trainer in the Air Warrior Training Academy.
Anyway, the players I remember fighting more frequently who were very good are as follows. I mean no disrespect to others who were awesome pilots. We're dealing with my faulty memory of 15 years ago, and many excellent pilots were on my side or were in their peaks when I was already mostly in scenarios and out of the arenas, so they aren't in the list. In no particular order: Airmigan, Death Wish, Wild Thing, Phoenix, Bushwacker, B-Man, Escargot . . . Actually, there were a lot of very, very good pilots over the years. HiTech and Pyro were both very good, but I don't remember fighting them much. Same with Killer, Caligula, Stiletto, Anvil, Drum, Twist, and a bunch of others.
Of those, I've seen Wild Thing in Aces High once (the guy I remember fighting a lot back when I was new and unskilled, probably in 1990 or so), and of course there are HiTech and Pyro. I think all of them have the same handles in AH as in AW. Airmigan says he might fly in the next scenario.
There are some other old-time Air Warrior pilots around. There is this thread where some of them have said "hello":

Hmm. Who were you in AW? "BTW" doesn't ring a bell. It sounds like you and I might be closer to being contemporaries in AW.

Skychimp told me you've been playing for almost 9 years.

I played a little in 1992. I remember Stiletto. That guy was amazing in a p38. The original (not to be confused with the one written about on this board frequently) Vossman helped a lot. Ghostrider was my trainer. I forget my tail number.
On Chris I got a cool tail number - 1911 (well cool before 9-11) so I kept that even after they switched to handles. I remember Wild Thing had a handle that started with an "E" for awhile though I can't remember it. I have a film on a floppy somewhere of me chasing him from A land to C land and shooting him down in the ack of a cv. But mostly (in fact probably every other time) he killed me. He was vicious in a zeke. I got pretty good in half time then things slid with relaxed real time, and went completely to pot in in FR :D
Now in Aces High, I mostly just get shot down, though I'm getting a little better.
I sure do miss those hit bubbles.
-
Only been around since late 99, but the first stick I remember from back then is Jekyll, who spent time to teach me the basics of dogfight ACM.

Why, thank you, Ack-Ack! :)
I'm thinking that, one of these days, if I get up to speed enough in Aces High, I should adapt it to Aces High. Currently, though, most of my on-line flying and effort is centered around scenarios.

Hard Rock flew here for awhile...no clue if he still does. To me he was the "original spitdweeb":)....I've never seen Rocketman or Big-T up. I'm drawing a mental block on the really good 190 driver (late AW-dos) then early AW on AOL (93-96)...but he was just amazing. There was also a phenominal A-26 driver...cobia on steroids...but then the A-26 was actually a great bird in AW. Obviously Lev was there as well...Jase did fly here....unforunately my memory just doesnt go back as far as I do....
One guy who I always enjoyed who I would put in the "semi-ace" range is the guy who introduced me to AH back in 1999...havent seen him in a few years but hope he's alive and swatting the little white ball in the Carolina's somewhere...that would be Moss...

HR was my (friendly) arch nemisis in AW-DOS, he flew here right before AHII went live, so its been a while.
I'm drawing a mental block on the really good 190 driver (late AW-dos) then early AW on AOL (93-96)...but he was just amazing.
That was Killer I believe, he was awsome in the 190. My greatest single kill in AW-DOS was a 1 v 1 kill of Killer, both of us in 190's and co-alt/e. I won in great part because he underestimated me at the merge and never got the advantage back, but I still look at that as a well earned victory.
There was also a phenominal A-26 driver...cobia on steroids...but then the A-26 was actually a great bird in AW.
DeadDuck flew the A26 a lot as a fighter, both gunned and ungunned. I used to love to go back to the Halftime arena and out turn Spits and even Zeke's with the A26...drove the Halftime guys nuts. :)

Have to add Manx to the list!
One of the few that I lost to more than not! {S}
VAMPR and MURDR were always tough..but always higher...along with SHawk ....
Iron1 aka...oops, promised not to tell...was tough too.

I started AW1 in the beginner arena. Just as I finished my 10,000 points, AW2 came out. I think it was '97, but age obscures exact date.
I enetered the AW2 arena a complete newby and recieved an invite about 90 minutes into that first session. The Squadron name was and names like Viper,Tctoc, TKO greeted me. They were a great bunch and had me up to speed in about 2 months. As time pregressed, people left the squad, new people came in. I eventually had the honor to lead for a time. The only dissapointment from was that I was the one left to turn out the lights and lock the doors.
I applied to AWTC and was accepted. THe next great adventure began and I had the pleasure to serve the AW community as a trainer and as a Trainer/night manager. Many a pilot got the lecture about patience and practice. They also got to hone their shooting skills as they shot me down, alot! I think back to that time when one could "SEE" the light bulbs suddenly get brighter as the ideas imparted suddenly make sense to the students!
That is what I miss the most from AW.
Any roads, I was invited to Fly with the Damned. There I met TC, Ren,Snowman,Doc,Wind,Fool,Drano,Jordi, and about 100 others.
Then EA became involved with AW and that is another story. The choices were Warbirds and a new game, Aces High. We decided AH was about as close as we could get to the AW experience.
The Damned went through many squad designations until HTC allowed a change that let us use Damned Air Group as out name.
Most of those I met when I first joined the Damned are still around. They're not fliing much, but they keep in touch. Many have gone onto other things in life but, by inlarge, they remember AW with reverence.
The thing the Damned have taught me most is that it ain't the number of kills, or who you can/cannot kill that is important, it is the people you meet and the fun you have that is the most important. AH and all its players, especially The Damned have filled that dance card very fully.
As always, Damned if you do, no fun if you don't!!!!

The ones that I remember, from AW, who are still in Aces High: whels, coors, filth (that bastid shot me down tonight, the bastidy bastid), brooke (who wrote the best acm manual ever), and others: s-fox, shi, and others that I can't remember. It all depended on which arena you flew in I think. I believe that Phoenix is still alive and well in Warbirds.
-
I've been talking to HR over in the bigweek.awscenarios newsgroup (on the news.bigweek.org news server). He says he might come back to play in scenarios. When the next one comes along, I'm going to try my best to get other folks over there to participate, too.
DeadDuck, well, he's holding out and refuses to fly anything anymore, although I keep poking at him.
Also, eh, thanks for the compliment!

some of you may remember me from warbirds. I've had alot of fun fights with many. WB to AH currently not playing but I will play again. Come fly the friendly skies!!!

I started playing AW4W in September of '96. Back then I went by the name DeadF, then later UberM, +Uber, and +Dead. Much later on, I assumed such identities as Cilk and Logs. I mostly flew Full Realism in either FR Big Pac or FR Fighter Town.
I came to Aces High in very late beta; I didn't stick around for AWMV.

DD was ok. But, he was made awesome because he had Wolfy gunning for him. Rabid flew it solo and would beat up spits and take their lunch money. :)

LOL, you should have gunned for those guys, it was too funny. We used to do that for squad night, we would gun a B-17 or a couple A26's/B-25's and furball in it. DD would do some move and ask "I wonder if a B-17 could really do that?" I went to BigWeek when I heard he was hanging out there and tried to get him to come fly AH. I didnt get any real interest until I told him I had looped both the B-17 and the Lanc. You could see the gears turning and all I could think about was the legions of noobs he could introduce the Deathstar too. :)
One of the most fun days I had in AW was fighting Pyro with Twisted gunning for him in a B-25. They must have shot me down 100 times that day, but I learned a lot and laughed my arse off.

Grits, have you tried that in AH yet? I'm wondering if it would work as well as it did in AW, since on-target gunnery in AH is more lethal than AW hit bubbles were. I used to do some of that in AW (mostly in A-26's) -- I'd love to give it a try sometime in AH.

Not sure you have the "right" plane...the vader had an upper and lower turret...and the pilot had pretty lethal nose mounted pop....
B-26 would be closest thing I think....
As for the deathstar...might be better in AH since all guns would bear...but you cant engage a horde like you could in AW:)

I tried it a few times, but the AH gunnery makes it more difficult to hit a fighter in a looping buff. Of course, I could never hit a fighter in AW buffs with the big hit bubbles. I would imagine that a good A-20/B-26 pilot like Cobia or Bullz, with one of the good buff gunners like 999000 or Tatertot, would be a pretty good combo.
Actually, I'm a pretty fair stick in either the A-20 or B-26, I might see if I can get 999000 to gun for me a few times and see how it works out.

If I'm ever up at the same time as you, Grits, I'll give you a holler, and we can try it. I'm not necessarily a great buff gunner, but I'd still love to give it a go.

Haha....the last time I talked to DD he was STILL playing female characters. Besides the obvious vicarious thrills, I think DD believes females get deferencial treatment. :D

Brooke, I still have a copy of your "How to fly and fight" manual on my old hard drive here in the box lol. I save that hard drive because it has all my AW stuff on it (and I have TONS of films). I have AW3 and AWMV on there, plus I have the box version of AW4W (though no saved files from that one). I also have all the "manuals" on the planes in AW in .txt format, and some lesson writeups. I got almost all of it from the AOL AW download area they had setup, plus a few lesson writeups from later days when I was in there.
Stega, you were pretty good friends with CR. Did you keep in touch with him? I lost his address and phone number years ago in moving around and I havent been able to get any response by email for some time now. Jaimie never was in the best health, and I'd like to check up on him if you or anyone else knows how to get ahold of him. I know he stayed with EA after AW went down, I believe doing TOS reports.
And what ever happened to YES? I used to have great fun shooting down his spit, and having him shoot me down in return. I see the 327th is here, so did he come here too? Just curious.
-
SA2, speaking of AW and of YES, he's been in my thought recently, too, as I've been putting together pictorials for the AW scenario Longbow that ran in 1999. I was GL of I/JG3, which YES was in. He saved my butt several times in that (such as in the first portion of this frame http://www.electraforge.com/brooke/flightsims/scenarios/longbow/part2frame1_pictorial.html ).
-
Great writeup! A shame you werent doing those scenarios anymore by the time I got into them. They were always the highlight of AW for me, even more than squad nights or anything else. The only thing I enjoyed anywhere near so much was nights in the Training arena with the new folks. Most of my films are training films I made during classes, but if you ever want copies of any of them for the screenshots, just let me know.
