Title: When it rains it pours
Post by: Nilsen on June 10, 2005, 11:58:53 AM
Kinda like with AWMac.

As some of you know i lost my granma in october and my mother in january.

Just under a month ago one of my closest friends lost his father to a massive heart attack..

and just a few hours ago..

my father inlaw was put in hospital with a "drip" or whatever its called in english and extremly high blood preassure, and he has lost (temporarily the docs said) the use of his left arm and he has problems speaking. The missus has gone to see him while i watch Mia.

maybe its just cause you get older, and you naturaly see more funerals and hospitals than wedings but jeez... sometimes you gotta wonder if something is all out of balance.

He will be fine the docs sais so no real worries, but there will be some reahab and prolly a change of lifestyle from  14 hour days too....virtually nothing for a long time.

Just... oh well, some of you knows.

Yep. It's a funny life.

Focus on the future when he'll be up and around doing the stuff he loves to do.

He loves 3 things in life.. his job (maretime lawyer), sailing and family. Hes gonna have more time to focus on two of them now. If he had just calmed down abit on the lawyer job he could have had all three.

My best freinds (his son) wife is comming over with their kids cause he too took the plane to Bergen so they will spend the night here with me.
The stupid law firm he is partner in took 4 hours before they told us what had happened to there is gonna be hell to pay for that.

My Dad had a heart attack back in '91. A "moderate" one I guess.

At the time, a year or two into retirement, he had just taken up deer hunting as a sport.

He was pretty down about his heart, of course. We took that interest in deer hunting and used it to get him back on his feet "in time for deer season". He worked hard at rehab, altered his lifestyle. He made the deer season, albeit in limited fashion. It helped him that his docs told him that making the season was an "unrealistic expectation".  ;)

He deer hunted a few more years and then moved on to other things.

He's 85 now, still going strong and interested in life.

You just have to "get back up" after you've been knocked down. The deer hunting, in that time and place and for him was the tool he used to pull himself back up.

Good luck to your F-I-L and the family.

Nilsen, it sounds like he had a stroke.  My grandmother had one back in 92.  She's 84 now.   My family will pray for him.  I wish you and yours all of the best.

ill try and sort out the english name for it to be sure.

-edit- it looks like stroke or TIA is the correct word for it.  not enough blood reaching sertain parts of the brain for a short period of time... if its longer then its called something else i belive

Nils, sorry to hear about your FIL. Wishing him and your family all the best. It may be a long and difficult road, but know you have friends pulling for you.

During the late 80's to mid 90's I was wondering the same thing myself. I watched all of my family elders pass away and also lost my daughter. It will get better, but it takes time.

Some good news for us today.

It seems that the stroke wasnt very bad and he is going to be just fine _unless_ he has more. They say that the next couple of days are when he is at most risk of getting more so he will stay in hospital for a week or so followed by some rehab back here.

My father-in-law (and mother-in-law) live with us.  Just over a year ago he had a heart attack.  After receiving a stint and some drugs he is better than he has been in years.  A few months ago he was hospitalized with a bleeding ulcer; he nearly bled to death.  Once again he is fine.  Even at 85 he is up and at em everyday.  He went to bed after my wife and I, and when I got up he already was making everyone pancakes and bacon.

Keep praying.  I truely hope all goes well.  I know we've had our shouting matches at each other.  But that is all forgotten Nils.  Just keep us posted.

Here's a joke for you.  What's the difference between Pink and Purple? :)

Yeah, sounds more like a TIA (transient isthemic attack) than full blown stroke.  I had one about 20 years ago.  First time I knew I couldn't drive.  Right arm numb, leg kinda dragging, slurred speech, blurred vision.

Had the wife drive me to emergency room.  By time I got there, it was over.

Been on one aspirin a day ever since.  No recurrences.  Much later I attributed it to using a vibrator around the back of  my head and neck to relieve a stiff neck.  Duh, not a good idea.  Think I jarred a clot loose.  Just my guess.

Sure got my attention though.  Led me to try to relax more and smell the roses.  Like many people, I had my share of stress.  The TIA eventually became a wakeup call that I think has helped me to a better life.  Hope your father-in-law recovers fully.

Thx Bodhi :)

Halo..

Same here, except he is still weak on his right side I think it was. Looks almost like he is limping abit and he does not have full use of is right arm. He will be sent down here to the local hospital sometime this week I have now heard.

From the reports I get he does enjoy all the attention the nurses are giving him and I dont doubt that for a second.

I have not seen him yet, but the missus gets back with more details today.

You never had a stiff neck or sore shoulder or sore arm and rubbed or massaged or applied heat or used a vibrator to ease the aching?

Each of those remedies makes the ache feel better or go away.  And of course all, including vibrators can be used anywhere on the body.

What I'm sayin, funny as some implications may be, is better watch out with any vibrator around neck and head because it's a real short path for a blood clot to the brain.

And I'm serious when I say that ought to be a warning on all vibrators.

That may or may not have been the cause of my TIA, but to me it is the most likely cause.  Haven't used a vibrator like that again and haven't had another TIA in some 20 years.
