Title: Flag per Vehicle Ratio
Post by: blur on November 29, 2001, 07:13:00 AM
From observations of fellow citizens since the 9-11 attacks I’ve come up with a theory. It seems that the number of flags displayed on a vehicle is inversely proportional to the gas mileage. Can anyone else corroborate this?

In an attempt to divert this thread away from a shouting match...I had a boat for 9 years named 'The American Dream' and flew an American flag from its stern every time I went out, I've had a HUGE American flag on the back wall of my garages in both houses I've owned...I've always flown the American flag since I've lived on my own, and recently (9-11) began flying a 4th flag from my auto(inside).  Lost 9 relatives to the hands of the Japanese, and my father was in the 101st Airborne during the Korean Crisis.

Proud to be American, even BEFORE it became stylish.

lol good one!

my town's all decked out in flags..it looks great on the old victorians.

the only thing that bugs me is that you can tell some people bought those cheesy tv offers where you get a lapel pin some cheap flag and a cheesy uncle sam windsock or something. thats just cheap.

i already had like 4 flags at my house and i'm a commie nazi infidel bastard right?... ;) i wonder why more others didnt?

and another thing...<andy rooney mode on>....didja ever notice?

those damn commerative coins and plates? is anything lower than that? i mean come on - a big 'crying eagle and brave firefighter' or whatever next to 'elvis' and 'princess diana' on your plate wall - it offends...cheapens the event into a marketing push.

I left the flag shoulder patch on my leathers,  I left the flag bumper sticker on my car.  I did get a new stick pin for my hat though.  I thought I might as well join in the new found patriotism.

It's a shame that it took something as terrible as the recent events to bring back patriotism, but you won't see me complaining about it.

i went back to my appartment for lunch and saw a 80's rusted out ThunderBird with a flag on the antina, passanger window(window was rolled up so it kept the flag from falling out), and a flag on the back window.
On the back of the car there was 3 "god bless the U.S." in a row along the trunk.
Also on the back bumper was 2 more stickers with flags and some writing on them. (didnt stop to read what it said.)

i have nothign against putting flags and whatnot on your car but DAMN that just looked trashy.

Without the flags, the car STILL would have looked trashy.

Even poor folks can be rabid patriots.

Like me.  :)

Because of the circumstance, I'm not sure it is greater patriotism.  It is solidarity, but I'm not sure one just suddenly become patriotic all of a sudden.  I don't think that flying an American flag makes you a greater patriot than not doing so, what makes you a patriot is what you do, what you say and what you think.

Please note that there is also a difference between nationalism and patriotism that is lost on some people. Patriotism is good, nationalism is bad.  Patriotism inspires one to improve and help one's country, nationalism blinds one to the deficienies of one's country.

Patriots don't need Flag

If you are patriot you have done your time in the army (or be usefull for you country) and continue to do so (happy tax payer).

Showing a flag won't do anything if you are not ready to pay the price.

As far as "waving the flag" and serving my country is concerned, I did both. I still serve in retirement now and have my own flag. If sonmeone doesn't like it they are cordially invited to leave by the most expeditious manner, blur.

?? me ??

I pay tax because it's a part of what I can do for my country (among others things )not because I'm unable to hide my money to the local "IRS" (Fisc in France).

I'm happy to be honest and pay what I should pay for everyone in my country I'm not an egoist saving for myself only.If you have trouble with this position : GO AWAY ! .

I didn't know they had "tax and spend Democrats" in France.

Everyone pays them.  To be happy about it, is down right un-American.

"Go away" is what my 2 year old granddaughter says when she doesn't get her way.

We (french) hate giving money for the tax but we have to recognise that it work ... and I prefer seeing my tax having good usage ! (don't you ?)

It depend of what they do with the money ... in fact here you can be "cured" (dunno if it's the right term) by any doctor without to pay even if it's a costly specialist our care system take care of the cost (equally if you are rich or poor)
And there is lot of different exemples of our social state like the 5 week (mandatory) payed vacation the 35 hour per week ...

Our productivity is equivalent (and sometime better) than any US worker ... go figure...
I'm not myself a socialist (by French standard   ;) ) but as I said before I've to recognise : it work at almost 99% ...

Mine say  "PASSER" wich is strickly equivalent ... but in French   ;)

These comments were made "tongue in cheek".  I seldom use smilies because most of the people on this BBS have enough snap that they don't need them.  What did not occur to me before, was the language/cultural difference that they might overcome.  My screw up.
