I have been tobaco (smoke) free for over 48 hours now and I feel fine!
-
2 days is the first hurdle.
2 weeks is the next.
Then 2 months.
Then 2 years.
Good luck!

how long and how much did you smoke?

It'll be a good two years before you lose the craving... and even then, I went ten years and started up again. I try to keep it down to one or two a day. I don't like smoking, but I truly do like the nicotine rush... especially in the morning... get out of a bed, take a scorching hot shower and then have a smoke. I swear, my fingers tingle.
-
I am looking forward to starting again.

Congrats Gunslinger :)
I have been free for just over a year and four months now and its great. You have some bad days ahead of you but trust me it will get better. I still miss them from time to time, but its only mental and not my body that needs them anymore so its easy to get over it.
Just hang in there and we will support you all the way. I know that this forum besides my family helped me by keeping me occupied and offering advice that helped.
If it gets tough than just chime in and ill be sure to tell you how well you will feel when you get it out of your system.

pack a day for about 15 years.
Sandy,
I know what ya mean. My morning ritual used to consits of a shower then a couple smokes and cups of coffee in the living room while I watch the morning news.
My mornings seem a little empty now but oh well. Being a cheap skate I also look at the monitary advantages. I'll be saving over $100 a month.
Edit: thanks for all the kind words this is not the first time I've tried but definatly the first time I've quit (besides boot camp)
-
One thing that actually helped for me was to suck on a toothpick.. still do it now.. new habbit but not as harmful ;)
-
i just was thinking, it should be OK if you can get throught the mental withdrawls, and also the physical withdrawls....
but after 15 years you got ALOT of built up junk in there, and from my one experience of quitting (after 1.5 packs per day for 10 years) after about 1 month i started coughing up the most foul things every morning, and then 1/2 the day too.
it's something alot of people don't talk about. the lung cookies that show up when you body finally realizes "whoot we can get rid of the junk now!" LOL
it hurts alot too, straining your stomach muscles coughing so hard and deep.
just wanted to give you a fair "head's up"
good luck
invest in trident gum now LOL it can be a lifesaver
-
I was never a heavy smoker... 10 in a day would be a lot.

I chew gum like crazy at work. Yesturday I told our floor supers to F'off really loud (even considered using the intercom) That didn't go to well but being that I was the ONLY person on the floor doing any kind of work what could they do?
Yup,
Chewing gum has been great, personally I like the sugerless extra. I've also been drinking ALOT of water. I run more and it's starting to get in the triple digit temps here now but even more so than usual I will have a cup full of water with me.
-
yup you will drink alot of water and feel the urge to keep on the move and prolly lift weights or something to get that "crawling" sensation away.. and it does go away.
-
Keep it up. It gets a lot easier.
I smoked for 30 years and haven't had one since March 2.
Course I got grumpy for awhile :D
-
Any inkling I ever had of trying cigarettes vanished when I was visiting my Dad in the hospital a few years back. The guy rooming with him had this huge hose up his nose and every so many minutes, it was sucking huge masses of black/brown crap out. He was talking to my father, who was in for a procedure on his right ear, about how he'd been a lifelong smoker and oh-how-he regretted it now. My Dad smoked for 10 years and kicked the habbit back in the 80s.
All the power to you guys who are trying to quit.

LMAO yup, you are officially in nicotine withdrawls....
it will gwt worse before it gets better. imagine a woman PMS'ing and drunk, and she just got dumped for a 19 year old cheerleader, and told she was fat.
thats the level of emotion you will come across for a while ; )
heck i was on prednisone while not smoking and i made a guy bank teller cry in front of 20 customers i was so rude LOL

I'm two weeks into Zyban myself.

Good Luck Gunslinger, im smoke free now 3 years.
One day you will forgett about smoking total,
and only reminders of others (like this thread) will bring back
smoking memories. In this moments i always
smile, knowing i´m not a tabac slave anymore.
Dont forgett, years back before you started smoking, you
enjoyed your live, dont you?

I watched my guardian as he suffocated due to emphysima. He smoked Camels all his life and it killed him slowly and very painfully. When he finally went into the hospital the last time he was happy about it as he knew it was almost over. Smoking is suicide. There is absolutley no valid reason to smoke.
Gunslinger hang in there.

you know what truley sucks about quiting smoking?
NOW since my coworkers and peers know I am quiting, when ever I get worked up or pissed off or even slightly passionate about something they just say "oh he's quiting, you'll have to excuse him"
Example: During our morning meeting the other day an Airman interupted me 3 times and got me real fired up. I didn't realy go off on him but I did let him know in not so few words to shut his mouth. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr:mad:
3 days now :aok
-
3 days is great, now 4 is your target. One day and one hour ata time.
GL... rooting for ya
oh, and WELL DONE!
-
If it's the $100.00 a week you don't like, I could take it off your hand..
-
Guns, I quit cold turkey when I was in the Coast Guard with no problem. 3 years later I started again during a real stressfull time. That was over 20 years ago and I've been smoking ever since. You will always have to watch out for the relapse because it's just like riding a bicycle.

Gunslinger, a question on the use of Zyban.
How long do you use it for, and to what degree did it help you?
Reason I ask, is that I have smoked for almost 30 years. Have only ever been able to quit once, which lasted only about 6 months before I was back at it. (that was cold turkey, and I was positively a complete bear to be around)
I would really like to get this monkey off my back, as I have no intention of checking out this way.
I think it is really great that you are doing so well in your endeavour to quit. WTFG!!!
Cheers, and thanks in advance

Have the dreams started yet? Mine did when I went from 1 to 2 pills a day iirc 10 days into it. I rarely remember a dream, maybe 1 or 2 a month, but on zyban (wellbutrin) I was having very vivid dreams every night.
That, and 3 of us were on it at the same time (and 1 of us for depression, not a smoker). Our friends all pointed out we were doing the same thing. We pretty much lost our tact and were being exceptionally harsh w/o even realizing it. It did work like a champ though, and I quit for a few months, right until a birthday party at a bar...
I gotta go get a new perscription & do it all over again :(

Here's how it works
The Doc that runs the program here recomends being on the Zyban (or welbutrin) for 6 weeks. You start out taking 1 pill a day for the first three days than 2 a day there after.
Being an anti-depresent you do get some side effects. The biggest one for me is the stomach problems (indegestion stomach aches and such)
also when you start it there is some euphoria (sp) and I did zone out once or twice.
This is my second attempt with zyban, my first failed. That's not to say it didn't work cause it is now but it may take you more than one attempt to quit on this stuff. This time around it is definatly ALOT easier than last, I'm just a tad more "abrasive" this time around (so my superviser at work told me today)
The basic premis for the pill is it's supposed to help you with your cravings. That's not to say you are not going to have any but it does help. What worked best for me was to cut back BEFORE I started. When I started I set a goal and stuck with it. I cheated a few times (wich is a good thing about zyban, smoking while on it will not kill you like the patch).
What they teach us in class is after about 7 days smokes will taste like complete ass. That's the time when you need to think about putting them down. The first 24 hours kinda sucked and I ate ALOT of potatoe chips (like 5 bags) but It has gotten nothing but easier since then.
Tonite I'm having a beer and it sucks cause beer and cigs go hand in hand but I need to re-learn to do all my habits with the habbit of smoking. Good luck if ya try I recomend it.
Indy the dreams were alot worse when I had the patch. I had a post WWIII terminater type dream that completly freaked me out.
:aok

did he tell you to drink a lot of water as well to purge?
-
Am I the only person that smokes while taking a shower?
-
hmmm...doesn't look like Zyban is going to be an option for me.
Possible side effects don't go to well with flying. I'm going to be flying probably all summer.
Maybe I'll try the cold turkey approach again.
Thanks for the info Gunslinger, and continued success to you sir;)
cheers,

Probably more like 1.5+ a day:)

yup forgot about that. Doc told me to pound the water. I live in the desert and we drink ALOT of water as it is but I was putting back a gallon a day for 2 days this week just because I had nothing else to do with my hands.
RTR,
I can't remember what the doc said about those in flying status but while i'm not a pilot I wouldn't recomend anything that makes you zone out like this. If it says anything I work with explosives every day and they cleared me :D
Silat,
It averaged 1 to 1.5. 2 packs a day if I was drinking heavily.
-
note to self: dont start smoking...
-
I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be allowed to take it and fly. Even if I was okayed to do it, I still wouldn't. Some of the flying I do doesn't leave a fella much "pondering" time.
Vorticon, good choice. It's a nasty vile habit and I wish I never started 30 years ago.
cheers,
RTR

To stop smoking you need to drink water upside down.

think of it this way.
Me and my wife smoke ABOUT a pack a day each.
cigs cost $3.40 a pack on base here.
for both of us that's $210 A MONTH. worst part is if I by them off base they get exponentially more expensive plus most of it is taxes.
I could lease a decent car for 210/mo.
Hell in some cities that will rent you a pretty nice room with a view.
Then throw in your health issues and such.
-
you don't have the guts to really quit....you will be sneaking off with 88 to suck on a studmuffin in a month.
lazs

goes to have a smoke and watch this one tumble toward oblivion ; )

Good luck gunslinger...
If you feel the urge, do exercise, or hell eat a healthy snack, but do not replace one bad habit with another...
Good luck, I know yah can do it!
Semper Fi!

How's your progress Guns? Just curious. Also a suggestion, one of my oldest friends recently quit smoking after a 20+ year pack a day habit. His doctor prescribed Wellbutrin to help him. He had tried in the past unsuccessfully, but this time he had no problems what so ever. No irritability, no cravings. He said it really made a huge difference. You might go to sickbay and ask them about it.

going well. I havn't smoked since monday morning. I have not cheated at all. My wife and work say I'm still more "abrasive" than usual but other than that all is well.
For me it's the same thing with the zyban as your friend. The first time I tried it, it sucked and didn't work. This time it worked like a charm.

The latest method is that they induce a comma and in six months revive you.

yep... they can laser out a chunk of your brain... the part that allows you to suck... It does a few more things too but nothing real important.

not me. I started (foolishly) when I was 14 or 15. It was shortly there after that I quit doing sports.

Take every day as it comes. Don't quit on quitting. The cravings will always be there and crop up when you least expect.
Been smoke free 18 months now probably will always be hard work. But I feel better for it.

what do you mean by "allways be there" Will I "allways" want a cig? It's been since monday morning for me and I kinda want one right now because I'm drinking. Earlier today I was fine except when my kids were acting up in the car, I REALLY wanted one then. GAWD I WISH I NEVER STARTED!

I was 22.
Zyban worked wonders for me.
-
No mate but for me even 18 months on I get the occasional craving. Certain situations or times. They go after a bit but they pop up and annoy me sometimes. I just chew gum instead. I have a supply of that nicotene gum if they realy bad but I haven't used that stuff in months. It will get easier.
-
GL gunslinger , ive been a chewer for around 14 years and have been chew free for the last 6 weeks , i would think the cravings are about the same , and it sucks. been chewing nicorette gum to help stop , someone said before that you will always crave a smoke , I hope thats not true . Good luck

FWIW,
The cesation class I go to says chewing is harder to quit because you get more nicotine. When I played sports I'd cut down on smoking by chewing (skoal strait and kodiac wintergreen were my favorites). The only way I could quite chewing at all was to start smoking more. (or swallow a huge plug on purpose in order to turn green and throw up all night)
GL to you too.

skyprancer is proof that you don't need the brain lazer part to quit.. he did it on his own and as you can see... is still able to suck.

Laz,
now was that REALLY necessary????? It was funny but was it necessary?
