Title: Tea variants
Post by: Yeager on June 15, 2005, 10:41:55 PM
Anyone else like black tea?  What brand?

I have started to develope an appreciation for the bland taste of green tea.

Any suggestions on a real good green tea brand?

I suppose I could just go to someplace like:

http://www.blacktea.com

or maybe....

http://www.greentea.com

or perhaps

http://www.teaworld.com

and research the world of tea for myself but I wanted to fully embroid myself into the new and improved O-Club and see if there were any others out there that liked tea, like me?

I like unsweetened green tea, but I just buy the Safeway "select" brand. I've had a few different brands but can't really tell any difference between any of them.

I currently have "STASH" brand and it's pretty good.

Big fan of Irish breakfast teas.  Earl Grey is good, but if you have only had the prepackaged stuff you dont know what you are missing in flavor.  They have a couple of really good tea stores here in Honolulu where they sell it like coffee beans.  I can go in one of those places and just stand there smelling the tea leaves.  Try buying online and make your own teabags or buy a cheap teaball at wal mart.  The taste difference is incredible.

Im boring when it comes to tea.. i stick with Twinings Earl grey... nothing in it.

Same with coffe really, plain plack coffe with no sugar, milk, cream or alcohol (yes you heard me). Not because i dont like allt the stuff you can have in it, but im abit to lazy to spend time doing all that fancy stuff :)

Latte can be good but only one at a time and far apart.

Yeager,
Down at the Farmers market, as you face it standing on Pike, off to the left of the first Fish Mart, there is a really good tea shop. You will find so many good flavors, and the folks who work there are very knowledgeable.  Give it a try.  I stop there every time I head to PPM just to smell the aroma inside the shop (and inevitably buy more tea..)

Twinings Green Tea Blend, a mixture of green and black teas. Highly recommend it.

As for plain black tea, there is only one:

Anyone try that new stuff 'Advanced Tea Substitute' from Sirius?  It's great, even if the taste is almost, but not entirely, unlike tea.

I also like "No Tea".  It has great brownian flavoring.

Milk tea:
Cha chan teng (greasey spoon) tea - it's bitter, it's orange, it's the consistency of paint, and it's been brewing in that huge pot since before the British came. The crack cocaine of tea.

Taylors of Harrogate Yorkshire Gold is really the best of the blended teas. Red label Yorkshire tea comes a close second.

Although Orange pekoe (Fortnum & Mason does a good drop) is really pretty damn fine, but that's Sunday best tea.

Black or Red tea:
Bo Lei - Jolt tea, if you will. Smells like a dank basement. Wakes you up for a month or so. You can also go half-half with gok fa (crysanthemum) for the gok bo, which is very tasty.

Oolong tea:
Tiet Guun Yam (Iron Buddha) is terrific, especially the Chiu chau stuff in the little shot cups. Very dry, and pretty strong.

Shui hsin (Shui Xian)  is a lovely oolong kind of thing - it's a nice in-between. Not to strong not too weak.

Green tea:
Top grade Longjing tea (top tip: this mixes great with psilocybin mushrooms - tastes good and feel no nausea).

Nasty suprise tea:
Kazakh tea. It's very good milk tea, but with salt. Ewwwww. Tibetan tea with yak butter might be worse - not sure.

World's worst tea:
Lipton's Red label. Insipid, insipid, insipid. Available all around the world, it is possibly the number one reason coffee is so popular. Only good for iced lemon tea, and even then you have to brew it for a month.

Admiral's tea, a Russian navy recipe:

Take 2 tea-pots, brew very strong Indian tea in one, and slightly lighter Ceylon tea in another. Take a tea glass, pour Indian tea first, then - some boiling water, then - Ceylon tea, mix it carefully with a spoon, then pour it into an open bull's-eye (illuminator, window) and pour brandy into the glass. Enjoy.

Gotta admit, that was classic.

I drink Tea about 4 times a day, at the moment I'm hooked on St. Michael's Extra Fort Tea which is the Marks and Sparks tea brand. My mum picks it up at a supermarket chain in NJ that M&S bought (Kings), and posts it off to us.

We are also blessed to be able to pick up Tetley tea from the Ft. Bragg Commisary (they have a lot of international products due to the high number of foriegn born wives) on occasion.

I take tea with milk and two splendas. Tea should be served hot, "swee'tea" as it is commonly served down here is actually an uncarbonated soft drink composed mostly of water and sugar with some sort of caramel coloring added (I am always reminded of the "Men in Black" line "Give me Sugar in Water".)

As far as the exotic stuff goes, I drink Gunpowder Tea & Iron Goddess of Mercy (which to my mind is the best variety of Oolong ever brewed).

Hi Lew,

My favorite, brand/grade of Gunpowder is "Temple of Heaven." I've had other brands and grades ranging from Imperial to Dust, but this is my favorite. Online you can generally pick up 2 pound bags of this or several other good brands for under $20.

I should have noted that I drink Gunpowder (and all green teas) "neat" but commit the grave error of adding milk and sugar to Oolongs.

I know, I know, I'm an unwashed Philistine (that's probably why I don't get any more E-vites.)

When I went to Japan a few years ago, I was told that too many people steep their green tea leaves in too hot water. After letting the water boil, take it off the heat and let it sit a minute or two so it cools down a few degrees, then add it to the leaves. You'll get the full flavor of the tea with less bitterness.

The vast majority of the tea I drink is from iced tea. I do drink gree tea with maybe a little sweetener depending on whether it's bitter when I am eating Chinese / Japanese food. Other than that all I really have used is Lipton tea for hot tea and that very infrequently. I do doctor it up with milk and sweetener.
