Gentlemen and Gentlewomen:
I'm on the road and don't have details but my wife reports that the brother of 1776 called after the surgery this morning. I had asked Oz to let me know as soon as he could.
Anyway, my wife says that his brother reported that they opened him up, took a look and sewed him back up. Apparently the cancer is "too high"; whether or not it's the kidney or the pancreas I cannot say.
I WILL find out more tomorrow and give you all an update.
This is a very, very sad moment for me and for many of you as well I am sure.
Those of you that are "believers", do what you know how to do.
Those of you that don't necessarily appeal to a "higher power" in times of trouble... hoist a beer in his name and wish him best of luck. He's d*mn sure going to need it.
I'll get back tomorrow with more info.
In the mean time... realize your own mortality and "love one another".
I'm totally bummed. This is a GOOD man.
-
Thats sad news indeed.
:(
I'm gonna try and get a dialouge opened with a guy I haven't spoken too in a good many years. I hope he's listening...
..then i'm gonna hoist more than a few.
-
That's bad news :( Whether or not you believe in a higher power, know that faith is a very powerful tool. This says it best:

There are some sad things you learn as you get older. One of them is that really nasty things admit of degrees.
<S> 1776, you got it bad. I'll punch back a shot or two. Hell, maybe I'll even go back to work.

Boys,
We've lost some wingmen in the past and this is one guy we shouldn't lose. I'll toss back a fine Irish Red for him tonight, and this is one guy who's gonna be roamin my mind. Toad, keep us updated as to what all is going on. This is one guy I don't wanna lose.

Bummer, this is a great guy.
I was kinda worried for him in the cancer thread, but I still beleive everything will be fine.
-
OZ says he doesnt remember but He helped many years ago in AWIII. If it werent for him I might have given up. I was told he helped everyone. OZ is in my prayers! :(
-
This is bad. :( I hope old 1776 pulls though. He's to good to lose. :( Most of you don't know, but when I was a newbie, 1776 took the time and winged me on a long B17 mission to Rook HQ WAY back in Beta 3. He taught me the basics of the game. He didn't have to, but he did.

Thanks Toad for the info. Damnit I am sorry to hear it. I am so sick of hearing about and dealing with cancer already.
Prayers are OTW for him.

Toad, please tell OZ and his family that we are with them. The fight has just started; The bogey may seem nasty but I'm still sure that he'll win it.
<S> 1776. You'll make it.

A few years back when OZ (1776) and I were both still in AWIII I was guffing around with a Japanese Kate with a Torpedo on board. I was flying about 50' off the water when this F4U started to dive on me. At the last moment I pulled up into him and fired those puny guns it has and watch in total amazement as OZ splashed down and I recieved a kill for it because I hit him before he hit the water.
After this I started a long email message that went something like this to OZ's CO at the time.
It is my duty to report to you that on this day one of your pilots died in action flying his favorite F4U. This action was the result of being shot down by a Japanese kate which I was the pilot of. It when on with detail about the flight and all.
The next few days went by with no OZ online so another email was started that OZ has been found and is now a prisoner of our country and we are willing to make a deal for his return. CO's response was I think if OZ was shot down by a kate then keep him. And do not let him start singing hell drive you all nutts. Next reply I said OZ is now singing and if you dont make a deal we will have to hang him for unfair punishment. This went on for about 2 weeks or so when we finally made a deal to let him go and walk home, CO hope he get tired of singin by the time he got back.
Not ready to give up on him yet cancer can be beat nowadays and this is one of the curable one I believe. Let all pray its early enough to get it.

This is the second time today that I receive news like this. Sad day :(
I hope and pray everything will be OK.

Just talked to Oz. He's still in the hospital, still somewhat sedated. If all goes as expected, they should release him to home at the end of the work week.
It is true that they opened and then closed without removing anything. He told me the Doctors said the kidney was not a pressing problem. The pancreas is the problem, they believe it to be cancerous but that has not yet been actually confirmed by testing.
Chemotherapy will begin shortly in any event I think.
He said to say "Hi" to all of you, thanks for your prayers and concern.
I'm sure he'll be posting in less than a week or so.
In any event, there's little we can do for him except prayer, the power of positive thinking, best wishes or whatever you choose to call what we all do in situations like this one.
Now go say hello to somebody and smile at them like you mean it.
It's about all we can do, eh?
-
I can remember When I first seen his name I thought to myself, "Hey! The spirit of 76!"
I keep on telling myself no, that this is not happening. IT is hard to believe one can feel this way about someone they never met. Ya feel so damn helpless ya wanna puke.
My thoughts and prayers will focus on him for awhile.
God Bless and best wishes from the Swager family!

Nothing meaningful to add but a prayer. May God's strength be with you and your family, 1776.

He used to meet with us here in KC for our BBQ get togethers.
A kind man who pocesses humility...a quality very rare in this world.
Please take a min to ask God to bring healing and peace to him. This flesh of ours will most certainly fade away...our spirit will live on.
Jesus said in the bible, "And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall recieve".
I would do the same for any of you...let's please come together and help this man.
Thanks

1776, family, and friends,
As we go through this life, one thing is inevitable, and that is death. As a Buhddist I believe, however, that death is not the final end, but a transition from one life to another. I imagine each of us walking separate paths that overlap, from time-to-time, allowing us to share each other's presence as we weave the ever-growing tapestry of now. Please read the poem I reference, below. I wrote it to remind me of the eternal intermingling of our paths. I hope it brings you some comfort.

Very Nice, buhdman; VERY NICE.
Talked to Oz again this morning. He'll probably be in the hospital a while yet. His "plumbing" hasn't all proved that it can still work after the anesthesia, and they won't let him out till it does.
Of course, being a hospital, they won't FEED him until the plumbing works. And since it was abdominal surgery, he had to flush out before he went in and has only had liquids since.
Go figure.
Wonder how long it takes a pipe to empty out the bottom end if you never put anything in the top end?
Hospitals.
Anyway, he'll be posting soon I think.
I'm not going to speak for him; I'm sure he'll do better than I could.

1776 Laughter is the best medicine, I mean it quite litterally. Despair, stress, and worry at this point will kill you.
Hang tough, stick to your guns & laugh in deaths face. It's the only thing he doesn't understand.
<S>

Aye Ghosth...and the last thing he should do is quit doing the things he loves. I dont know if I remember reading this right, but didnt he say he was gonna be out of AH. If that is the case, I think he is wrong. He should be in here having fun. If its a money issue, hell I am sure we could scrounge up enough change from between the sofa cushions to keep him in the game. I still have my $15 in the budget for AH and I am not using it. I will be more than happy to pick up a month or two for him just to help keep up his spirits. :)

Oz,
Hope ya get better. Positive thinking has more to do with health than most people think, so here's my bit:
0+1 = 1 (see, that's positive)
;)
Again, I hope things turn around for you.
-
These are tough times. My prayers go out to 1776 and his family. I hope he hangs in there. Cancer is a slow and painful way to go, and I wouldn't wish that upon my worst enemy. Hang in there 1776! You are in my prayers.
