It's friggin childish to censor all 'bad' words from the radio buffer..
I got muted for 10 minutes for saying: toejam there is a spit get him
I spent the next 10 mins being chased by the spit in two occasions not being able to call help - not that any rook would have come anyway tho.
No wonder we can't take fields if ppl can't keep a single field capped 10 minutes!

The filter isn't always on.
Though... once someone discovers it is off... its only a matter of time before its back on. eh animal?

Simply drop the "shit" in your typing and there is no problem. Since it is fewer keystrokes you can get it out faster as well. If you don't like the profanity filter, I'm sure there are places on the net you would like more then. Places where kids are not allowed, unlike AH which does have kids playing daily.

-
Dont try to tell us you were muted for saying "shit" once, it doesnt work that way.
You will get a warning first, then continued attempts to swear will get the mute. I strongly suspect that this is what happened to you.
To find it necessary to continually swear when communicating is somewhat childhish don't you think? Thankfully HTC has set up this filter to prevent some of the really jerky people from ruining the game for others. Note the fact that this filter didnt always exist, HTC instituted it a while ago in responce to pleas from many in the community regarding the accelerating foul language usage. I guess Quake had become boring.
Most of us dont mind a swear word uttered in frustration, but there were those who continually used some of the most vulgar terms to berate others. I find it even more amazing that there are still players so intent on acting like juvenile jerks that they will slightly change the lettering of swear words so they can demonstrate their immaturity.
If you got muted, its your own fault. Dont think we should be barraged with offensive language just so you can say toejam.

Develop a vocabulary...
ppl as yourself implemented the need for such a filter in the first place.
-
yeah, what eagler said. it happens and is no biggy, but with some people its every other word.....gets old.
-
It's friggin childish to censor all 'bad' words from the radio buffer.
To me, what's "friggin childish" is people that can't communicate respectfully when typing on the common radio channels.
I understand a player might feel the need to mutter certain phrases to their self when bested by an opponent of superior skill. But to take the time and effort to actually type this into the text buffer to share with everyone else would seem to require a level of intelligence somewhat less than a sponge with Alzheimer's.
There, I feel better already. :)
-
Our squads newest member is 14.
Sure, he's heard these words before, but if his parents happened to see too much profanity, perhaps they wouldn't let him play. That would be a shame.
When I was a trainer, I probably worked with more kids than adults.
The filter is there to help make up for some folks lack of decency and common sense.

Censoring the word toejam is just hypochracy..
I really hate the thought of having to 'self censor' first before typing in the heat of the virtual battle..
I understand the need for this tool since there are many who really abuse Ch1 and 2.
However couldn't it be so that the message with the 'bad' word gets muted - thats it..?
I admit I use vulgar language sometimes when I'm in dire situations (especially in the helpless goon) and some strong words sometimes slip out. Anyone who knows me knows also I don't normally use that kind of language..
The bottom line is I'm a bit peeved about the whole US style of censoring (be it nipples on tv, saying words like vagina or noodle - lol medical vocabulary..) It's like people would somehow be saved from the reality of life if they never see anything harsh on tv or any public media..
They might show a detailed murder with blood spilling everywhere on a tv-show and still censor that 'bad and offensive' language from the program.. I think that's just nuts.
Rapper interviews on MTV sound more like 1khz sine wave generator than a person talking..
Anyways, I realize the need for this tool to maintain at least some kind of immersion. One must remember though how easy it is to avoid the protection if one really wants to insult someone. That renders the whole filter almost useless.
I posted that post smoke pouring out of my ears since it was a real bad day for me and a couple bad words slipped causing me to lose buffer privs on a very crucial moment..
Long story short: my thread is not only about AH cuss filter but the whole attitude the US censors have. Being european I really can't see the point. Back here people say things like they are even in tv :)

Um... not to be rude, but do you understand the meaning of the word hypocrisy? An automated filter is nothing if not consistent.
-
Yes, what I mean is that I don't consider that bad enough word to be automatically muted, much less for 10 minutes..
If you have a 5 year old son playing the game he learned already much worse words from kindergarten, don't worry.
I'm fighting windmills here so lets call it quits. Cya in the arena.

In the future, consider these alternative words:
hogwash
hooey
excrement
feces
crap
turd
scat
shite

Build a cut & paste macro then pick out a few good ones to use quick.

Just curious...what are the words being filtered? I got a warning box once and to my knowledge have never used a "bad" word on the radio buffer. (really) I had no idea what set it off.

Aijai Mr RiplEy!

First you said this:
I got muted for 10 minutes for saying: toejam there is a spit get him
Now you tell us this:
I posted that post smoke pouring out of my ears since it was a real bad day for me and a couple bad words slipped causing
me to lose buffer privs on a very crucial moment..
First it was just saying "shit once", now its "a couple bad words". Tomorrow will it be "I was on a vulgar tirade"? Please get your story straight and be honest in your posts.
Dont like censorship? Too bad. Nobody holds a gun to your head making you submit to it.
Funny how people like you feel your right to express yourself in a foul manner should override our rights and preferences not to be
exposed to that kind of language.
The bottom line is I'm a bit peeved about the whole US style of censoring
Again, we are not forcing you to accept it, not forcing you to play a US based game. Maybe we have a differant set of moralities than you, but that is typical around the world. Not all people, not all societies share the same customs, believes and moralities. One thing you learn if you travel alot is to accept and respect local customs, laws and indeed moralities.
I find it stunning when I spend time in some European countries just what can be seen on the open television channels. In the Netherlands, I saw a television show called "Men Love Sex". It seemed to be all about the porn industry. If was full of porn. I accept that in the Netherlands, this is accepted and sex is a wide open thing, so I sure dont complain about it, but I would prefer we never get to that level here in the US.
I am a supporter of the profanity filter, as I think are the majority of the players.

* Censored by HTC for incredibly abusive language * Dago * Again censored for foul language and racist remarks *

Dago, the filter could be implemented differently.
Please get your story straight and be honest in your posts.
You calling me a liar now? Have you ever seen me behaving bad on CH1? Do you even know me? No. You just don't have a clue what you're posting for.
You can support whatever you want Dago, I'm not stopping you. Hear no evil, see no evil.. :)
-
MrRipley our beautiful language has lots of nice words to use in situations like that ;)

I have more than a clue.
Am I calling you a liar? No, but you seem to offer up that you might be one with your contradictory posts. Maybe wording your posts to appear the way you want to appear make some sense to you, but it only weakens your position.
You come to play AH, you must accept its terms. Why do you think you should be able to swear, and submit all other players to your need to speak in an offensive manner? I just dont understand that. You have failed to make any sense in any of your posts so far on this subject, not offering anything of value.
Try to behave online, and you will find the filter never bothers you.

Dago, get off your moral high horse and go patronise someone that you've actually met, I really dislike that.
I admit that use of profanities is vulgar and unnecessary. However I think a 10 minute mute is an overkill to put it mildly. Especially considering that I was not aiming to insult or offend anyone, just spilled a few harsh words in distress.
If all posts above mean to say you're pro censorship all I can say is good luck and good riddens!
Cya in the arena.. But let's not talk bad about eachothers ok?
-
hehe I only talk bad about people I dont like. Just because I dont agree with you doesnt mean I dont like you. Heck, just thinking about you makes me all warm and fuzzy. :)
No, this isnt personal. And I would agree that a 10 minute mute is excessive for swearing, if it happened immediatly. But be honest, you were warned with a popup first werent you? I know, because yes it has happened to me. I saw the warning (you cant miss it) and I didnt do it again. You saw the warning, ignored it, and then came here to complain. I just dont think you have the right to complain if you were warned.
dago
-
You get warned first I believe.
Unless they changed it, you have to be foolish enough to muted.
It was modified to allow you to swear on squad channel very early after it was introduced. A nice feature I might add.
-
Mine own personal opinion is that the profanity filter is a good idea! I dont need to see or hear profanity unless it is coming from one of my own squadmates over RW!
Too many minors on the flight line. If you ccannot control yourself when it comes to a simple flight sim, what is going to be your reaction when a real problem strikes.
Mellow and cool down and enjoy the flying. Entertainment to me is suppose to be fun!
Relax and enjoy!!
:)

Dago believe me it was a pure accident..
The first warning screen came as a surprise, I wasn't aware that the word I used would be listed.. Actually I think it gives you 2 warnings but I'm not sure how long it lasts untill it expires.
I forgot the whole thing soon, untill a few sorties later this one spit came seemingly effortless to attack me from a fully vulched field.
I panicked (was goon) and tried to scream help only to find out I was muted.. That made my day. First I got 'betrayed' by teammates who didn't protect the goon and to make it worse I couldn't even ask for help when I reupped and the same spitty found me and killed me again. You must understand how idiotic and frustrated that made me feel.
IT WAS MY OWN STUPIDITY THAT I LET IT HAPPEN! Yes.. Still I think that 10 minutes is too long unless the player really abuses his privs and insults / harasses other players.
Anyway, its an act of futility to continue this discussion. It's better to focus on something more productive like hmm.. killing people :)
-
Yeah, we beat this horse long enough.
cya up there

Im not sure i understand the taboo with swearing. At work i dont swear much because its not the right environment. When playing AH I dont swear much because its not the environment. On the other hand, when i play Counterstrike I swear occasionally. In real life and away from work i swear like a trooper and so do most people i know.
Maybe its an Australian thing, I work with a guy about my age who is on a work visa from the UK. He tells me he almost never swore until he came to Australia, now his parents complain he's cussin too much :).
What im trying to say is that I don't understand people who say 'get a vocabulary'. Thats not nice. I like to think I have a large vocabulary and I know how to use it. It's just that sometimes I use that vocabulary, when appropriate, and sometimes I swear profusely, usually because its easier and i'm lazy.
That is all.
-
Oo, so i dont sound like an opinionated idiot, my thoughts on the filter are thus. I think it is a good idea. Maybe 10 minutes is too long but if you simply dont swear you dont need to worry about it. Theres plenty of other words you can use, I saw some examples earlier in the post, two more that spring to mind are:
poot
dang
No problems with the filter there.
Be good to one another.

AH shouldn't waste their time mutin, offenders should be booted..repeat offenders booted for good.
-
Well the problem (at least for me) is that during combat my mind is focused on survival and the tension brings a different kind of vocabulary..
All this sounds rediculous since its just a computer game..
Eagler: read what you just wrote, think again and tell me that saying toejam online is a valid reason for booting someone. It's ok to say doodle, but not toejam right? Maybe we should change system msg also to say: Your pilot got a boo-boo instead of pilot wound.
But I have to say that lately I've had a few sorties that brought me excitement like those when I started playing WB.
Definately fun.

Mr Ripley
to think it is one thing, to say it another, to type it still another step.
Personally I don't want to hear or see it and if my wife or child are watching I don't think they need to be exposed to it either. I don't pay a monthly fee to read an individual spewing profanity on my computer screen because he thinks it's cool or supposedly can't "control himself". I think what you should get out of this thread is, no matter how much you think we all want to see how excited & out of control you can get when playing AH, we really don't.
It's just a level of maturity. I may not have had it at your age either.
<S>
-
I think the muting of players who can't control thier profanity is a really good thing. I can understand how, in verbal conversation, a profanity can slip out. That's not true of a typed conversation. One must conciously choose to type in the profanity.
I also like the thought that I can drive some foul mouthed moron to spewing profanity and getting himself muted.
-
Eagler: First of all, you have no clue how old I am, do you?
Second, I master the 10-finger typing and I really don't have to spend my time figuring out what and where I want to type something like some of you old-timers seem to do.. :) I type quite as naturally as I speak, multiple years on IRC have taken care of that.
I'm not saying muting the single line consisting the profanity is bad.. What I'm saying that 10 minutes seems excessive for using words which in the end are not that bad at all. No racial slur, no insults etc..
For example I find it MUCH more disturbing to see players shouting studmuffin, cupcake, gook etc. on Ch1. For some reason those words are not filtered it seems.. Very weird to me.
But as someone already said above, enough beating the dead horse and let's move on with this. Profanity filter is not my problem in general, it just happened to hit me on a very bad spot and got me upset.
-

I'd guess I'm older than you :) I'd go as far to say my oldest son is probably your age, give or take a few. He's 23.
And when I was younger, I was less mature as most of us were .. that's all I'm stating.
Life's too short to worry about such little things.

FYI, I heard they developed the "nasty" vocabulary database by enlisting the help of a bunch of FDBs to participate in a brainstorming session during one of the last CONs.

I've read several reports and studies all proving that it is impossible to have a brainstorming session made up exclusively of FDBs.

A what session? Brrraaaaiii...wha?

Heh, including naughty words into your vocabulary expands it. I'm all for it.
Some of the most memorable flames on alt.atheism has been made by people with an impressive intellect and even more impressive vocabulary - particularly in the naughty words department.
I prefer the Brit profanity to the US. "Bollocks" is more powerful than "roadkill" to me. Similarly "you motherdiddlyer" isn't as impressive as "you filthy piece of distended rectum!".
Oh well.
Now, all of you, go naked to a BBQ party for blind gays and serve weiners.

Still need a filter for Spanish. There are some people with really foul mouths in Spanish in the MA < and other languages I don't speak I suppose >. These aren't the "heat of battle" kind of stuff but rather more like "See what I can get away with" kind of crap that has no place in AH IMO.
