Alabama Teen Accused of Stealing Cessna
By Associated Press
Thu Jun 16, 8:59 PM
FORT PAYNE, Ala. - A 14-year-old boy stole a Cessna and went on a late-night joy ride, taking off and landing twice before being arrested, police said.
The teen suffered minor cuts and bruises on the second landing because the plane came down hard, causing the landing gear to collapse and the propeller to dig into a road beside the airport, police said.
The teen allegedly took his mother's van from their home Wednesday night and drove to the airport in Fort Payne about five miles away. He said he then found the key in the unlocked plane, removed the Cessna's tie-downs, started the engine, and began driving around.
"The next thing he knew he was in the air," Police Chief David Walker said.
The teen, who police said had never before flown a plane, was in the air for nearly 30 minutes.
Police charged him with theft and took him to a juvenile lockup. The teen was not identified because of his age.
Authorities said the theft raised questions about security.
"We've never had a problem before with planes being stolen, so I guess we have been a little lax in our security," said Larry Noble Cowart, who owns Valley Aviation, which runs the airport and owns the plane.
Cowart said the teen could have entered through the typically unlocked airport gate or climbed a fence.
Fort Payne is a town of 13,000 people located about 80 miles northeast of Birmingham.http://www.comcast.net/news/strange/index.jsp?cat=STRANGE&fn=/2005/06/17/158064.html (http://www.comcast.net/news/strange/index.jsp?cat=STRANGE&fn=/2005/06/17/158064.html)

Wonder why he didn`t .ef before the heat got there. :)
-
Never flown before, was in the air 30 min and managed to land twice.
Not bad I would think LOL
-
Yep that proves he has had some simulator training in order to keep it up and make a couple of landings.
:p ;)
-
The thing that amazes me is how he managed to taxi, take off and land. I'll bet it wasnt pretty, but he got it up in the air... twice. Without ever flying a plane before.
Flying around is the easy part... In respect to actually landing.

FORT PAYNE, Ala. - A 14-year-old boy, Dale "I Choad" Addink Jr, stole a Cessna and went on a late-night joy ride, taking off and landing twice before being arrested, police said.
I see GREAT potential in this young boy...
:D

Hes lucky he made back alive and without serious injuries.
I'd say hes played too much GTA San Andreas, considering he also stole a car (technically anyway).
-
Hmmm.......not one of yours is he Reschke? :)
-
On top of all that, he's lucky the pilot didn't have any gust-locks on the control surfaces or any other type device like it and that he actually took the time to remove all the "remove this before flight" tags. Coulda been a real short and rough trip.

In a related story...
BUMBACO REPORTS ALABAMA BREAK IN.
AP, Alabama.
Airbumba , CEO of Bumbaco, the makers of Flyagra, reported a break in at thier Alabama warehouse. "The servaillant tapes seem to show the intruder was a person of small build, possibly a teen", company officials reported.
Once the company learned of the theft, it immediatly warned local airports for possible flight violations, and as well asked parents to check their credit cards for excessive billing of aviation related items.
"Flyagra is a powerfull tool to aid aging pilots and poses no threat when used properly", added Airbumba, "but in the wrong hands, or used improperly it can lead to sticky situations".
Bumbaco added it's usual warning to it's loyal Flyagra users, " if , when taking Flyagra, you stay up for more than four hours, contact your local ATC immediatly".
