My boys are cluttering up the HD very easily with one called:

Morpheus

Has most everything. Songs, Flicks, Programs, Games.

Working OK at my house, G/L.

Just watch out, morpheus is full of hardcore porn and all kinds of freaky things, viruses included.

Your kids _will_ be subjected to x-rated material if they do searches in morph.

How do I know? Err.. hmm..

On my computer, Kazaa (http://www.kazaa.com) has replaced Napster.

WinMX is the closest I've found to replacing the look, feel, and functionality of Napster.

Kazaa is okay too, but I hate its unrepentent adware/spyware add-ons.  WinMX installs cleanly.

A better alternative to these is EDonkey2000.

Morpheus has a decent filter that will block any x-rated material or keywords you specify.  It is, however, fairly simple to turn off.

WinMX limits the amount of someone's bandwidth that you can use.  That's user configurable, but most people keep it at the default.  If there are plenty of people downloading from the T1 line, and it's only allowing 10% of the total bandwidth to be used, you're not going to obtain speeds much better than 56k.

OTOH, try pinging all of your results.  You're always going to get better results from a low ping than from a high ping.  Just because it's a T1 doesn't mean that it has 30ms delay; in some cases, I've seen T1s with 3000ms delay, and I've seen some 56k connects with sub-100ms delays.  In the latter case, realize that some people lie about their connection speed to avoid mad rushes of people downloading.  Those are usually the best to download from if the ping seems very low.

Also WinMX does not know what kind of connection the user is having.

If a person wants to mark himself as T1 while he has a 28.8 modem in reality, MX will show him as 'T1' user.

Morpheus and its multi-user spanning download is pretty good, I've got up to 80kb/s speeds from there.

The problem with all the gnutella clients and their ilk, is that when you find a file you would like, even if there are hundreds of instances of it, you will only DL it from one person.

With Edonkey, you will be DL'ing chunks from as many people as have the file available, resulting in much faster DL's and you won't tie up someones connection for as long.

Try it.

iMesh is decent, too.

There's a lot of peer to peer programs out there: here's a page with links to some:
 http://www.webattack.com/Freeware/network/fwp2p.shtml (http://www.webattack.com/Freeware/network/fwp2p.shtml)

Of course, I don't use them to find copyrighted music: I'd never for a second contemplate stealing somewthing from the overpricing music-as-a-factory-produced-item, no good, lying, stinking, freedom hating union of labels.

That's why I also recommend AudioGalaxy:

The Audiogalaxy Satellite is a small and simple program that allows you to share your music with friends and other users on Audiogalaxy. Never worry about resuming incomplete files. Once somebody comes online with the file you requested your partially downloaded file will automatically resume even if its not the original person you downloaded from. Audiogalaxy servers automatically choose the closest person who has the file you want. This makes life easier for network admins at corporations, colleges, and ISPs by reducing external bandwidth usage. The program also supports resume , in case your modem gets disconnected.

I really miss the old Morpheus, where you could specify the bit rate for MP3's.

As far as I know, AudioGalaxy is now the only file sharing program that will let you specify the bit rate... and actually get some results.

Having used most of the programs mentioned above, my vote goes for Morpheus, specially if you are into movies as well... works perfectly fine with audio, and it's just the same as Kazaa but without the spyware.

It's also grreat to find Saturday Night Live clips  :D  :D

LOL your right FD-ski, but then you never saw me bashing the russians. I'm a honest pirate, ask me & I'll admit it.   :)

KaZaA is on my machines, maybe not as fast as some of the others, but very dependable. Nice feature set, mp3 player, playlist mangager etc.

Spyware is something that sends data about your computer, your preferences, what you look for when you use the program, etc...

Depending on the software, it can consume a lot of uplink bandwidth and most people very much appreciate privacy, so if you are one of them, try to stay away from those programs.

In some programs, you can reject the use of this "included" spyware, as in Roger Wilco, but in Kazaa you have no saying in this.
