I was walking out of the Chattanooga convention center yesterday afternoon, when all of a sudden I heard the distinctive whoosh-roar-whistle of a fast mover going right over my head. I looked up in time to see an F-104 making a hard turn to circle around Lookout Mountain at under 5k. Very cool to watch and listen to, and certainly more fun than many of the "informational reports" I sat through this week (well ok, I slipped out of a few... don't tell anyone).
So is there a company giving Starfighter rides in the area? I searched the pamphlets in my hotel's "local attractions" rack but didn't see anything.

A few seasons ago there was an F-104 aerobatic 'team'
I don't remember excactly but I think they ran out of funds or some other reason to keep them off the airshow circut. There are also a number of privately owned F-104's out there so you may have been lucky to see one.
There are however lots of L-39's out there...any chance you saw this instead?

Yikes sorry about the large photo!

Hi Golfer,
No this was definitely a Starfighter, body was gray and blue. It had the classic "manned missile" shape with the stubby triangular wings with Fuel tanks at the end. Sounded like the Starfighters I've seen at airshows too.

Starfighters (http://www.starfighters.net/schedule/schedule.html)
Sea, has to be these guys from your description.
They have a two-seater but no mention of rides. Based out of Tampa.

Ah, those are the guys. Guess they're doing okay with their funds :)

It uploaded? I still show a smiley face fishing. Said the file was too big and .gifworks agreed.

This is why you saw them; they're scheduled in.

Hey!. 2 of the starfighters they have are imports from Norway. Glad to see they are still serving a purpose :) A ride in one of those would be sweet Seagoon. Id settle for a spin in an SR-71 tho.

My Father used to work on these when he was in the Airforce.
There is nothing that sounds quite like a 104. We grew up with that sound, and I kinda miss it.
My Father was lucky enough to go for a few rides back in the 60's and has his "mach 2" pin to show for it.
Pretty remarkable aircraft.
cheers,

F-104's are a time lifed item... unfortunately, a lot of structural components have limited time frame lives. The ones still flying are using the last of the remade compnents. When those are gone, thats it sadly...

Starfighters were always my favorite looking jet.
thanks for the link
