Someone cut through the crap...
I am stuck with PCI only slot for about the next year.
One simple question:
What is the best graphic card for PCI, that I can get.
I presently am running my old FX5200. It does well, and I really have no problem with it. Just wanted to max out what I can.
So anyone with this experience out there?
-
ur still stuck.
-
I think what you have is about the best you will get for now.
-
May well be, but I have seen a few reviews showing the GF 5500 and the Radeon 9200 as giving some improvement over the GF 5200. Just thought somone out there may have tried these.
-
not worth it.
how the hell does your mb not have agp? it must be like over 5 years old
-
i just tried a 9200 agp in a 3 ghz pent .. i wasnt impressed at all 1st it didnt have a fan on it (i had to mod it ) its fps was in the 20's most of the time just flying against the off line drones .. no distant view of the ground or trees , even the runways were gone til u was on top of them . so if you really want to see an improvement get a agp mb and a better vid card.
those cheap bottem line cards just aint the way to go if ya wanna enjoy ah .

Actually, I just bought the dang thing.
It's an HP pavilion A820n 3.2 ghz pent-4, 200 ghd, 1.0 mb ram.
Had head up arss when I didn't check the slots.
It's either ditch the whole thang or change MOB.
Now, I guess the question is which mobo will match up with it.
Feel like I'm in an M3 here with IL2s circling...
-
dam unlucky! im guessing it has onboard gfx hence no agp slot?
-
Well, I went ahead and ordered an GF FX 5700 LEIP.
Finally, read enuf reviews to find that this is top end as it gets with PCI.
Had a heck of a time getting to this conclusion.
So anyone out there with PCI only, this is it.
Finally found it at newegg, they had it stuffed in the janitors closet...
Well as I said, my old fx5200 really does put out some good graphics, no distorted video or lock up kind of stuff.
So, if the 5700 improves any at all I would be satisfied, until I
can purchase a new machine.
Wife ack would nail my arss right now, if I told her I was gonna spring for another new mochine...harharhar.
-
I'm sorry about your predicament. What a bummer! The good news is that a new mobo needn't be that expensive. I would imagine $100 would get a mobo to suit all your existing kit plus hev an AGP or PCI X slot.
My commiserations.:(
-
Yep, mobo's are cheap.
Now, it's to come to a consensus on which one will do the job and fit into my existing HP Pavilion A820N case.
-
First cancel that 5700 card:D Then establish exactly which P4 processor it is. After that it's easy.
If you are worried about the finances re your wife/partner, explain what has happened and say you will find a suitable AGP board for nuts money or a PCI E for slightly more. Ideally you do the switch yourself or get a friendly local shop to do it.
-
The board in my pc is an ASUS.
I think I have found another asus that should be compatible.
It has PCI-E x16 and PCI-E x1 slots.
I think I can do the switch.
-
It's really important that you chek which processor you have.

get a cheap mob set, sell the cpu that will come with it on ebay , sell the 5200 on ebay, buy a 9700 then u flash it up or 9800 and probably only have to outlay another 40$ difference. I've done that like 3 times now for different folks and myself couple yrs ago.

you cant flash a 9700 into a 9800
you CAN flash a 9800pro into a 9800xt though.
