AH terrains links area (http://www.ah-terrains.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=Web_Links&file=index&req=viewlink&cid=1)

you must have the bottom one, and then you can use the map .DEM files to view them in mapmaker.  Make sure you have the maps to cover the area you want to view.

Oh, ok....

make sure you download the map for the regions you want from here
global topo data (http://edcdaac.usgs.gov/gtopo30/gtopo30.asp)

these will be .tar files.

you have to unzip them....then you have to unzip them AGAIN!  LOL  that one had me confused for quite some time.

after that you will be able to get to the .DEM file for the map.  put it in the mapmaker folder and you are all set.

oh, and yes, put everything you use in themapmaker folder

the gusgs1_2.img
the mapmake app and the dem files

maps page (http://edcdaac.usgs.gov/gtopo30/gtopo30.asp)

here you see the big world map...click on the region you want...at the next page click on the co-ordinates link in the text (2nd paragraph)

this will download a .tar file.  unzip it...inside is the real .tar file....unzip that one....inside there you will find the .dem file, which is what you want, copy and paste it to the mapmaker file.

SkyChimp - everything you need to know about DEM's is right here:
GTOPO30 Doc's (http://lpdaac.usgs.gov/gtopo30/README.asp)

If you want to use USGS ground cover data, download the gusgs1_2.img file (can't remember where it is on the USGS site, but it's there somewhere).

Cheers,
asw

ummm....

there is no W140N19.dem

is it W140N90?  N40?  S10?

which ever you are after, it should be a round number like 10, 20 140..whatever.

what area are you wanting?

did you put your co-ordinates into the mapmaker?

top right "Input Parameters"

Latitude 44

Longitude -125

Width in Deg.  10

these will get you california.

the lat and long are the upper left corner of your viewing area, width is how big (in degrees) the viewing area is.
