Title: A new day in the O'Club
Post by: Skuzzy on June 22, 2005, 02:40:50 PM
HTC has a goal. We would like the O'Club to be a place where people can discuss anything within the boundaries of common sense, decency, and respect. It has to be that way. Like it or not, agree or not, these forums represent HTC and we are not about being abusive, antagonistic, derogatory, or disrespectful to anyone.

With that said, it needs to be known, moderation is not going to keep this forum alive.  It is up to the community, at large, to take care of this place.  To accept responsibility for it and to hold yourselves accountable for the posts in this forum.

That is the only way this forum will survive.  However, to help everyone get to that point we have instituted a new group of moderators whose task will be to handle the errant posts in a more timely fashion and with better coverage.

A new day starts with the first step.  From here, it is up to you.

Wow, I hit the Daily Double. 2 threads in 1 day. Guess I need to re-evaluate my self editing.

Just a question for future reference, and I'll direct it to Skuzzy so as not to attempt to sniff out the secret identities of the Mod Squad. Since my previous method of bleeping/editing harsh language is not acceptable, is Beetle Bailey style (i.e. #&*!) acceptable? It is used in the Sunday Funnies that are targeted towards children.

I'm being serious here and not antagonistic.

Is that an actual pic of Skuzzy.

If it is I am a bit shocked, from his posts I thought he was some mid 20 something network wiz kid.

Its funny how the BBS can effect your impression of who PPL are.

Old Man Skuzzy

Hmmmm, maybe that last comment was a bad idea.

Ducks away and tries to connect to MA.

Screams in terror as PC is obliterated by freak power serge.

Circa 2000.  What most people won't know is what a great person skuzzy is when you meet him in person. Very helpful, willing to lend a hand. The kind of guy you want others to know is your friend.  He's on his knees fixing network cables at Conventions with the best of them! :p

Yeah He sort of struck me that way with some of his replies to peoples request for assistance. (No suck up intended here :) )

But seriously for some stupid reason I thought that he was in his Mid 20's

Mind you anyone with a beard cant be all that bad :P

Now Now sadam only grew the beard when The US Bombed The .... Out of him and he was reborn as a peasant.

Before that he only had a hairy Lip

But How about this:

Anyone who works in IT,  has a beard, and likes AH cant be all that bad.

Dunt call me IT.  I do not want to be associated with that lot.  They are numpties here in this country.

IT1:  What's this port 13x stuff about?
IT2:  I dunno.  They are just ports.
IT1:  They say we should block them?
IT2:  What do they know?  We are the IT people.

Numpties,...the lot of em.

Hey now, don't make me come over there.  I'll soon be IT again, and the majority that are "numpties" make my mediocrity seem like godliness. :D

So my apologise If I offended you Skuzzy

Now which ports were you referring to, the cargo or passenger

Sorry mussie, I forgot the obligatory smiley.  I was having a bit of fun.  Not to be taken seriously there.

I admit there are one or two IT types which do know what they are doing, but they are usually stymied or sabatoged by the other numpties.

Nah Skuzzy I took it in good humor, but it also true,

I worked on a first and second level support desk and had to deal with "second level techs" who were intimidated by dos cmd scripts that I wrote. and I was only one of the first level support guys.

As I say to my mates down here "Its All Good"

Oh and I think you may have missed

Skuzzy,

80% of the funny things that I have read/seen on the internet have been linked from the AH BBS/O-Club.  For me, and probably others, humor is the biggest incentive for reading the O-Club.  I am concerned about the rule “15- Threads started with no user supplied content ,which addresses the topic, will be considered trolling and not allowed.” and humor related threads.  Can MPs not sweat obviously non controversial/argument inducing threads that are obviously just humor links?

Along the same lines, many of us first hear of breaking news/world events on the BBS –O-Club.  (Such as: “Major earthquake hits China today” type threads.  Not controversial, just news.)

Censorship of such threads may create a MP Nazi impression.

Thanks,

eskimo

Trolls also fall into that category.  If we have to detail the exact nature of every rule and the exact situation it applies, then we may as well shut this down now.

Common sense will prevail, but it is getting tiresome for people to keep beating the "But his was ok, why not mine?" drum.  The rules should not be something anyone is concerned with.

You want to be concerned, then be concerned this forum will go away unless there is a change in the communities approach to it.

EDIT:  If everyone put as much time and energy in taking care of this forum as they have in trying to figure out how to moderate it, there would be no issues at all (well, almost).

So, would posting: “this is funny” along with a link be enough of an opinion or user supplied content?

Seriously, I think that for most of us not locking a non-offensive humor thread would just be common sense.  Is using common sense when posting enough, or should we be concerned about technicalities?

(Not trying to be a smarty-pants here, just trying to figure out what we can and cannot do.)

Read my first post.  If people held that up as the standard for all thier posts, we would not need moderators nor rules.

My exact answer is not to answer what you are asking.  If you cannot figure out what is right and wrong, I cannot help you.

Just saw your edit.

Seriously Skuzzy, you’ve got to realize that we all have vastly different opinions on what is appropriate/trolling/common sense, etc.
Many folks make posts that get edited and they had no idea that they were pushing limits.

You tried Office 2003 yet Skuzzy?

Its pretty neat. Although, I have already found one thing that annoys me.

When you have Outlook open, it has both a small icon in the icontray and the normal taskbar button. When you minimize, it minimizes to the taskbar. I have yet to find a reason for the one in the icon in the icontray other than it changes to the send/recieve icon when its doing that.

It looks way different, I'm having nightmares of when we have to migrate from 2000/XP to 2003.

eskimo"

I have to say I agree

( by the way will someone explain how to quote properly I still can't get it! :lol )

Rules is rules is rules.

Its how they are interpreted that is the issue. The problem is that what one person considers a troll, in bad taste, profanity, and so on another might not. The issue becomes even more complex when you take into account the different nationalities in here and their differing cultural norms.

I honestly don't know how you get round that. But I think Skuzzy is right that some consitency in applying rules is realy  important.

If this thing is to survive and grow and continue to be an interesting bit of cyberspace, then we all have develop a bit of live and let live mentality. Sometimes things are controversial. Sometimes people might get a bit upset, let of steam or curse it usualy blows over its what real life is like! By all means the curse words could be blotted but ultimately I would say  If you don't like a post don't respond. Let it die. I hate to say it but this place is in danger of become some boring place where we only ever make online platitudes or talk about stuff that is real dull or just make silly quips. I actualy don't think it was that broke before it shut down. ( though I was away for a couple of weeks when the poop realy hit the fan so I could be wrong there.)

please people we are adults can we be allowed to continue as such. Can't we be allowed to get angry, laugh, argue about serious issues, get fed up with each other smooth over the cracks find common ground or agree to disagree. Don't moderate this place into total mediocrity.

(discalimer, this is not intended as an attempt to backseat moderate. It is a genuine attempt to discuss the OC. ;) )

1.  numpty
A person, who, for their public personality seems as if they can be compared to the pleasant 'Humpty Dumpty'... but when in the comfort of being alone in their room takes out the Jack Daniels and wacks off to a taped episode of Sesame Street.

Flossy, I am torn.  I am sure that posting that image violates rule 4, or 5, or, at least 7.  :D

4 - It's definately not respectful to other members of the board.  I can see the horrorified expressions now.

5 - It is annoying and not something many, if any at all, would like to see on thier computer screen.

7 - OMG!  Think of the children!

We know what two liters is...for some reason, the big bottles of soda come as 2 liters, and sometimes 3 liters.  Not sure why they decided to use metric in this one instance.  Come to think of it, the answer could make for a fitting post in the useless information thread!

While reading this http://www.hitechcreations.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=154436 thread i couldn't find the other thread he was talking about.
and rule 3 is
3- Do not open a new thread that duplicates a current topic

how about if the new mods post a link to the original thread when they lock a thread for rule 3?

my .02 cents

Hmmm... here's the catch-22. If I find an old thread that's still relevant and reply to it, I risk a rule #13 violation. If I create a new thread with the same topic, I risk a rule #3.

I'm screwed. ;)
