Saw that yesterday.  Thing is, that "mewling cub sound" thing just doesnt hold water for me.  Lions arent quite that dumb, to mistake a human for a lion cub, no matter what it sounds like.  I'd say more than likely, the animals sniffed out a good idea of what was going on (smaller, weaker one being attacked by larger, stronger ones), and took offense to the competition.  They were probably well fed enough, and saw the girl as no threat.  I doubt they were "guarding" her, but more likely waiting to see if the "challengers" would return.  In other words, she was bait.  When a crowd of humans showed up, none of which were threatening or could be seen as competition, the lions decided to check out the view elsewhere.
