Christ I just shrinked my skin to 512 to see how it would look and omg it looks horrible!!!
How does HTC make the 1024 skins into 512? Just shrink them?

did you increase color depth to 16+ color before resizing? When making maps and using skins I use 512x512 skin size (it's 1/4 the size of a 1024x1024 texture, one of my maps was 16mb when using 1024x1024 textures and I reduced it to 4.96mb by using 512x512 textures)
-
yeah that does look alot better.
Is that what skuzzy does?

All skins that go ma need to be 1024x1024..
-
he does something to turn them into part of the AH2 cache
-
Ah I see what you mean.
We send them as 1024x1024 256 color bitmaps.
So when he further shrinks them do they look really bad?
So would it be better if we sent them as 1024x1024 32 bit bitmaps for Skuzzy to sample down and resize?
-
(what makes you think he shrinks them down?)

waaaaaaah
Ok this is what I mean...
We send the 1024 version of the skin to skuzzy, right?
The game has 512 and 256 versions of the same skin, right?
We do not submit these, right?
So how does skuzzy make them?
I do wana see how my ride will look in 512 because thats what I use in game. I also wana know if there is something I can do to make it look better in 512 without hurting 1024.

Exactly, thats why I always wondered why we don't send the original 1024x1024 32bit version.

The skins are re-sampled down to smaller texture sizes as needed. This is all handle by proprietary functions. The degradation when shrinking is pretty minimal.
Here is a page which gives you a clue on the effect shrinking has. (http://www.hitechcreations.com/ahgs/techmts.html)

And if you are preloading skins, you are swapping as well as 1GB of ram will not hold all the skins and normal textures at 1024 size.
You will also encounter pauses/stutters occasionally, when a skin has to load, or when a swap occurs. For most, this is not acceptable.
And if you are running with AA on, you are definately swapping texters more often than needed.
Of course, if you have skins disabled, then none of the above is true.

I have skins and i do get studders every now and then.
Not that bad tho no 10sec studder just chops when 400-Alt.
-
And that is not acceptable to most people. Most want fluid motion at all times and you cannot get that with your configuration.
However, if you changed it to 512, you would be surprised at how much better the game plays and you would be hard pressed to notice any difference in the quality of the textures.
