Title: How to Kill a CAP [film]
Post by: Dead Man Flying on June 24, 2005, 10:21:36 AM
In the last couple of months, lots of people have asked me to post a Tempest film.  Here's one I filmed last night that I unimaginatively call "How to Kill a CAP."  I took off from a rear field in a Tempest and engaged the enemy horde on my own terms at a field that, when I had initially arrived, had no hangars of any sort left standing.  By the end, the field started popping back up again, and the enemy's efforts to capture the base were in vain.

The Tempest is that good if you use it properly.  Notice that I ignore bombers during the fighting since they take tons of ammo and had mostly done their jobs on the base already.  I concentrated instead on eliminating the fighter CAP, and that strategy seemed to pay off.

Here (http://www.beatdownposse.com/films/leviathn/How to Kill a CAP.zip) is the film.  Enjoy!  As always, questions and comments are welcome.

Holy chit!! :o :aok

Nice flying, one can learn a lot on spiral climbing in that one :D

Cheers!

btw, how can I set the Film Viewer so that it plays the sound of the aircraft I am in?

Thanks for the comments, Keiler.  :)  The film viewer actually shows a Tempest as a Typhoon for some reason.  You can tell that I'm flying a Tempest because no gun barrels stick out of the wings like in the Typhoon.

Really - I wish someone could post a film of offline drone shooting that could improve aim.

Great film !!! It amazes me how some people can stay fast. I get in those fights, and the next thing I know I'm down to 100 knts!...and we won't even mention the aim !!!  Well ok, I'll mention it :D If my aim was half as good I'b be happy !!

Any tips on aim Levi? You mentioned in the film about your "leathality problem" being fixed. What did you do to help things out, or did ya just pull out of a slump?

keep them coming!

Maddog and others who asked about aiming, I can offer a few tips that might help.  First, turn off your tracers.  You'd be amazed at often you "walk" the tracers to target rather than aiming at the target.  Second, bring your gun convergence in.  I had all of my 20mm in the Tempest set to 225 yards.

When I was talking about lethality issues, I was referring specifically to the flight before the Tempest one.  I was in a Spit V, and I hit an enemy plane on at least four or five different passes.  I poured my last couple of dozen 20mm rounds into him without so much as smoking him.  Only a mission in a Tempest could cleanse the bad taste out of my mouth from that bad run of luck.

Thanks Levi. I was wondering what your convergence setting was, but a lot of people don't like to give that kind of info, and I don't like to pry.... but seeing as your a giving kind of guy  :)

what resolution do you fly in? I read that some people fly in 800x600 to see the planes better.

Were abouts do you have your sliders set for your joystick? In the film you seem to pull your lead fairly smoothly, is this due to how your stick is set, or are you that easy on your stick? It looks like you pull lead, fire, then drop your nose behind the target to see if you hit. Heck at speed I'm lucky if I have time to pull lead !  LOL!!

Thanks again for your help and info!

I learned that lesson myself. About a year ago I turned off tracers and reset convergence at 250 yards for every fighter in the plane set. Whenever I'm working the TA as a trainer, I practice shooting, not only aiming for an aircraft, but specific parts of the aircraft. Having just added CH Pro pedals, I'm still adjusting to these after years of using a rocker for rudder. Old habits are slow to change and I still find myself having to "think" about the pedals.

Anyway, that was a stellar example of precision shooting and superior E management. Nice stuff Todd.

My regards,

Widewing

SkyChimp, I didn't land on water in the film.  It's possible that you haven't downloaded the map used in the film, or perhaps something is buggy, but I definitely landed on an airfield at the end.

I just realized that I didn't answer Maddog's question about stick scaling.  Maddog, I use a full CH USB setup -- Combatstick, Pro Throttle, and Pro Pedals.  I keep stick sensitivity at 100% across the board for all of my controllers (a straight line across the top), and I try to keep dampening and deadband to as low as possible with controller spiking.

Obviously such a setup probably wouldn't work with other types of controllers.  It just will not work on a twisty stick, for example.

I don't touch it.  I keep the gain linear, sensitivity at 100%, and deadband at 0% in the CH Control Manager for all controllers and all axes.

thanks for posting the film. your flying and gunnery are terrific, i watch your films to try and learn what i'm doing wrong.

watched it with the film viewer set at recorded views. it seemed that you never used the zoom ('z' key) while fighting. is this correct, or just something the viewer doesn't show? do you recommend not using zoom while fighting plane vs plane?

btw, on my viewer you did land on the runway.

That's correct, psob.  I almost never use zoom while I'm fighting, as I find it limits my situational awareness and actually makes it harder for me to hit a target.  I will occasionally zoom in on a target -- usually if someone is fleeing and 500+ yards away from me.  Otherwise I tend to avoid using it.

On an unrelated point, it just occurred to me that at one point in the film I avoid going after what look like two easy kills in order to pointlessly strafe a building in the town.  In actuality, I was strafing ground troops that the M3 had just released.  For some reason they did not show up on the film.

Thats exactly how I have my stick setup, and it is a Saitek cyborg evo twisty stick.  It is quite sensitive but it suites me best as it is.  I didn't like the default config for it, it felt limited in motion.

I have been spending months in the DA and TA and only occasionally in the MA teaching ACM and eddicate with 2 of my
boys.
We review films and discuss both after. I choke on my own spit saying this but Levi's films are second to none as training aids
for both.

Levi, I was going to go bed but then I read this post. I went into AH2 and did what you recommended. Heres my finds:

I no longer have a bad nose bounce nor do I jerk about alot while in manuevers. I feel very precise with my handling, especially with pitch control!

Getting rid of tracers was something I had done before, but when I re-installed AH2 I was too lazy to change them back. When I did this time, I noticed that I had a "feel" for where the rounds would go, and while I didn't count, one sortie of mine I got two kills using nearly 1/4 of what I'd use with tracers.

I studied your flying and didn't use zoom. I used to be a zoom potato but now after forcing myself to not use it, I was able to mind where I was going and what was going on A LOT better.

Levi, thanks! Oh and btw, a very SIC film!!!

it maximizes your stick's input to 100%

from the pics , I'd be guessing Levi is very light handed on his stick, almost using his absolute mind control power. so it seems. :D

I had my X45 setup like that and liked it. But now I get tons of spikes and had to adjust for that. I've gone through five or six of them. They keep dieing due to some electrical problem somewhere. I want to get a CH setup or even something a little less, but I'm afraid that it would burn up too. At least I still have warranty on this...

First after reseting my stick to match Levi's my first flight netted 5 kills and an assist. Granted I don't think any of the enemy pilots were of the higher caliber, it still gives me hope  :)

I don't know much about the Saitek sticks, but from those I do know that have them, they suggest you get the extra warrenty. When...note I didn't say "if"... it fails you just pick up a new one.

OZ, if ya can afford a CH set-up go for it ! I won't say it lasts for ever, but I'm still flying with the same "analog" set I was using at the end of AWIII and its still going strong...no spikes, tho I do have to recal the rudders now and then but I think thats an interface problem having to do with the "analog" set-up in an XP machine.

Thanks again Levi !

If your 14, unless your a Overgrown Sasquatch. A ch setup will be WAY to big for your hands. I went to Frys the other day played with the petals throttle and joystick. I couldnt reach most of the hats, and if i tried it felt like my thumb was about to be pulled out of its socket. I have heard of people putting push ups on there sitcks tho so it fits better...

Levi:
I haven't watched the film yet, but based on the rave reviews I will later when I get home.

I used to have my stick scaling set the same way, but was convinced by a squaddie that was the cause of a lot of blackouts I was having.  After reading what you wrote, I think I will go back to that configuration.  It felt better to me anyway.

I also have gotten into the bad habit of zooming in on the bandit.  While that has gotten me kills, it has also gotten me dead.  I'll work on stopping that.

I wanted to ask a couple of questions:

1)  Do you find that with your convergence so close you are still able to use your guns in roles other than air-to-air?  Going along with that, how do you handle air targets beyond that close range (say, D400)?

2)  What gunsight do you use?  I have found some that I like, but I am always looking for one that is more effective and first hand accounts from their user's as to why.

Thank you again for the film and all of the information!

I have small hands, and the CH setup works alright for me.  Like anything, it's a matter of getting accustomed to it.  I also remapped the views from one hat to another one closer to my thumb so I wouldn't have to stretch so far to use it.  Other CH stuff -- the pedals and the throttle -- shouldn't really present any difficulties to people with small hands.

[/B]

You can still hit targets beyond the convergence range, but close convergence reduces the lethality with which you hit them -- you get more of a shotgun effect at long range.  So basically I trade close in lethality for long distance lethality.  By the same token, those who set their convergence out to 400 or more trade close in lethality for long distance lethality.  Since I find that I do most of my shooting right around 200-250 yards, and since I set up my shots for those distances, that convergence works best to maximize my lethality.

[/B]

I use the default gunsight.  To be honest, once you get the feel for aiming you could probably fly without any gunsight at all and do fine.  I'd say that the gunsight is a matter of personal preference, though I can say that I abhor "busy" gunsights that clutter my screen (like the default P-51D gunsight).

Enjoy the film!  :)

Great film, and great tips from Levi, Thank you. I too have suffered from a bouncy nose when I am trying to fine tune my shot just before pulling the trigger. I feel it is the main reason for me missing shots that others make. I will give the 100% scaling a try.

I often get the first shot in an engagement. Even against some of the better sticks (including Levi), I have had the first or even first and second shots but I often miss, and eventually get out manuvered, only to fall to the bandit in his first shot opportunity. And when I don't get out manuvered, it often takes several passes before I get the kill.

One thing to notice in the film, Levi enters the fight with all the advantage, ALT and Speed, Plus a very capable plane. He is rarely below any enemy, and when he is he has a major speed advantage, which he can convert to ALT. Most every plane is behind "the eight ball" in the engadgements with Levi. (especially the C-47) :lol

This is NOT and excuse for Levis success in the film. It is an example of one of my favorite sayings.

Quote
A superior Pilot uses his superior judgment, to avoid having to use his superior flying skills

Levi always had an advantage of either ALT or Speed over every plane in his SA bubble. Except for the bombers that he ignored.

I do have to wonder.......

When most of us fly this way we are called cherry pick-in ALT monkeys, or whatever. Levi fly's this way and he is a great stick!:lol

Great flying Levi, thanks for the Film, and the scaling advice.:aok

Big Deal...i get those shot opportunities all the time every flight.
I JUST CANT HIT A DANG THING!!!!!:furious
I miss those snap shots and the quickies on the six shot. As a result i will eventually say the heck with it and just lock up on a bandits six till i get the kill. I get picked because of it. But hey...if you cant get 1 kill...why worry about even flying? rofl

You asked why what Lev did in that film is not called Cherry Picking, I pointed out why. Cherry Picking, technically, is when you pick someone while they are engaged with another one of your friendlies. Since Lev was fighting multiple badguys, alone, that is by definition, not Cherry Picking.

Excellent stuff there Lev. Simply brilliant. :aok  Without jacking the thread, I've got a quick question for you (or anyone that owns the setup). How do you like your whole CH HOTAS setup?

I'm currently looking into a CH HOTAS setup (with the pedals, course), but I've seen mixed reviews of the ergonomics. I'm somewhat of a small guy myself - 5'8, about 160, so my hands aren't that big. I hear the base of the stick needs to be below elbow level for a smaller-type of guy to be able to come even close to working the full array of hats and positionals on the stick. Can you confirm? On the right side of my desk is a series of drawers right below the mouse pad panel, so I could techinically create some sort of fixture for the stick out of plywood to lay across one of the lower drawers to bring it up about at the correct level. Overall, how's the setup?

This Saitek Cyborg Gold is showing its age, and I've really got into AH2, and everything aircraft related lately. So I'm ready to "get in the zone".

Ive been using CH sticks and pedals for ages, and have fairly normal sized hands, and have had no probs with getting all the buttons, hats etc. Although the top hat is a little bit of a stretch but not bad.
Ive just got (in the last 2 days or so) a CH Throttle. Im finding it very difficult to relearn the views (as i used to use the keyboard - not kidding). I also am finding that holding the throttle handle for a while starts to give me some tightness in my left hand (but thats just me), so i dont have my hand on it all the time, only when needed. I think the throttle would be best set up high to ease the angle the wrist needs to be on if it was too low, and/or put it on a slight inlcine away from you. YMMV...

P.
