Title: Foilage is indestructable!
Post by: LivetoDie on June 26, 2005, 04:20:41 PM
Not sure where to post this....I was out in a Tiger and was sneaking up on an Ostwind hiding in the trees peppering the base. The only thing between me and him was some low brush type stuff. no trees. I fired round after round only to see explosions of brush between us. He in turn swiveled his turret and proceded to take out my tracks. Eventually I was able to get a clean shot when he moved slightly.
Mighty tuff stuff that grass.
My suggestion is to make the bush and grass, maybe trees modeled to be destroyable. Kinda like in the real world?
Very frustrating the way it's modeled now.
How hard would this be AH?

It is not technologically possible at this time.  There are simply too many objects to track and relay data to the hundreds of clients for trees to be destroyable.

Then make them as though they were not there.... ie u can fire through with no penalty.

Can you drive through it? Must be awesome to just have your gun protrude from a bush then! The grassy knoll of death! :D

If you can drive through it ,you can shoot through it.

but if you can drive through them you can also fly through them, and thats just stupid. i personally love the thrill of flying below tree level at 320mph

1) HiTech said so some time ago in response to somebody else making this request.

2) My techical knowledge is pretty good and everything I know agrees with HiTech's statement.

I think you guys have the solution right there!
My new suggestion is not to make them destructable but able to shoot through only the low brush and shrubs. Keep the trees modeled the way they are but remove the modeling for the little stuff. I'm no programing pro Karnak but I would think it is much easier to remove something in the game than add to it.

Making it so the properties of the "Bush" object type did not iclude any collision detection while leaving the collision detection as part of the properties of "Tree" object type should not be a hard thing to do.

Not sure where you're going with this dedalos. Are you asking those of us on this thread if we have writen coad (sic)?
Or are you asking for any other "experts" who might be just viewing this thread to speak up and say "yes I have written code and this is/isn't possible"?
Please explain.

I am just curius to see if the people talkign about technical stuff and what is and is not possible or easy or hard or whatever, actually know what they are talking about.  You know, kind of like me talking about airplane engines, something I have no clue about.  Would you want to listen to me?  Not attacking anyone, I just want to know if I should be listening to what they have to say :D
