Title: Minicon - Munich, Germany - anyone interested?
Post by: Replicant on June 28, 2005, 02:09:04 PM
Hi all

Expanding on this thread (http://www.hitechcreations.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=154077) who would be interested in a meet-up later this year in Munich (http://www.muenchen.de/home/60093/Homepage.html), Germany?

I used to organise meet-ups in the UK and it's been suggested that I have another go over here.

There are two museums in Munich which would be the centre of our meet up.  They are:

Flugwerft Schleißheim (http://www.deutsches-museum.de/zweig/werft/e_fws.htm) which is a former WW2 and US Army airfield in the north of Munich (a couple of WW1 & WW2 aircraft, plus experimental aircraft).

Deutsches Museum München (http://www.deutsches-museum.de/ausstell/dauer/luft/e_luftf.htm) which is in the centre of Munich and is a general museum but also has an aviation section including some WW2 aircraft.

As well as the museums, Munich is considered the beer capital of the world!  So it's a good opportunity to get well and truly sloshed, if an excuse is needed of course! ;)

There was some talk of having this take place during the Oktoberfest (http://www.muenchen.de/Tourismus/Oktoberfest/Programme_Opening/131679/oktoberfestopeninghours.html) but I think this would prove expensive for hotels and flights.  Eitherway, there's enough beer anyway without a festival!

There's a lot of history in Munich, most notably stuff associated with the Nazi regime.  Also to the south in the Alps is Kehlsteinhaus (Eagles Nest) (http://www.kehlsteinhaus.com/english/index.asp) which was Hitler's alpine summer house.  This could be included if people were interested.

So, I already have a few people interested but I'd like to know how many more people were interested and a possible date.  Maybe late October? (after Oktoberfest)

I can put up two people in single beds and possibly one more on a sofa.  I might be able to get a discount at a Holiday Inn for those wanting to stay in a hotel.

For those in the UK, everything over here is relatively cheap and the transport system is very good with excellent access to the entire city.

Please reply to this thread to show your interest!  For additional comments then please email me (nexx@btinternet.com).

Hey Rip

By train it's a very long journey!  I just checked the times and it would take about 10 hours!  Best option would be to fly since it would take only 1hr 35mins and at about the same cost ($150 ish).Oktoberfest (http://www.muenchen.de/Tourismus/Oktoberfest/Programme_Opening/131679/oktoberfestopeninghours.html) would be between 17 September to 3 October so during this period it could be pricey.

Do you know the definite dates yet?  Would be cool to finally meet you after over 5 1/2 years of knowing you online!

Nexx  -we have just spoken on the phone. Count me in. I do have other things happening around that time, but should be able to manage it.

Rip, you bastage - sure you want to come if I'm going to be there? :p Don't worry, all cool. The distance from Paris is 427 miles: http://www.indo.com/cgi-bin/dist/place1=@174039/place2=@174006

Can you make it? I'll buy you a beer for each of my O-club transgressions. Could be an expensive trip... :lol;)

Beetle, you do know that they serve beer in a Maß which is actually 1 litre... and could easily turn out quite expensive! ;)

Of course, depending on how long people are staying for, we could squeeze in Neuschwanstein castle (http://www.neuschwanstein.de/english/index.htm) too, which is the castle Disneyland is based on.

It's been 9 or 10 years.  Places?  The Beergartens, of course. :)  Started on a Friday around 4pm, and after two beers was having a difficult time navigating the streets.
Had a lot of fun.  The people were awesome and you just had to love the way the street stores would put out chairs and tables for the drunks to be able to sit and recognoiter (I am sure they were for some other things, but I cannot recall).  :D

Went crusing the country side with a friend in his BMW and visited some small towns father North (might have been Northwest,..possibly Northeast..).

Just had a lot of fun.

I dunno if I can make it or not, but I have been wanting to get the Wifey to German for years.

Skuzzy, if you're not able to make it this time then let me know when you might visit another time.  I should be here for another 2 1/2 years before moving on... although I really want to stay here for the rest of my life!

Oi, you missed one...

Bavaria won't let any beer be sold that includes anything artificial!  So no chemical rubbish!  Definitely nice beer! :)

I love the dunkles Weißbier if served as 0.5 litre, or the dunkel bier if served in a Maß (1 litre).  Problem with the Maß is that you drink it like normal beer... then wonder why you're so drunk! ;)

That is it exactly!  One minute you are slogging one down and the next you are wondering why there are three glasses on the table in front you and you cannot grab any of them!  :D

I was in Germany last year and the opportunity to sample some, well ok a lot,  of the beers....loved all the different Pils and dark beers.   Great beers and great food.......

This September I am heading to Scotland and then touring south to London...heard tell they have some drinkable beverages there as well...:D

Actually yes, that's probably my favourite although Erdinger is pretty good too! :)  It's so easy to drink yet it's 5.5% or somewhere around there!

My knowledge of German is next to nothing, but I do believe there are two types of German beer with a similar name. There's Weissbier, that you mentioned, which I believe means "white beer". But then there's weitzbier (spelling probably incorrect) which means "wheat beer". That's the cloudy stuff. I prefer to drink the clear beers.

Beetle, both are the same. Weizenbier or Weißbier, same beer made from wheat.  Word change over the years.

Weißbier is the wheat stuff.  It comes in the normal light colour beer or the dark 'dunkles' type, which is what I prefer.  Have a look at this. (http://www.netbeer.org/english/witbeer.htm)

Weißbier & dunkles Weißbier

They also sell 'helles' which is pretty much the typical lager, but without the chemicals.

Just got a sample airfare quote from BA for the Oct. 13-17 period. Heathrow to Munich. The roundtrip fare came to £55 but there was £49 in taxes and fuel surcharges making the ticket price £104. Seems OK, but that fuel surcharge could go much higher.

That sounds about right for British Airways.

Here's some other prices:

Bristol to Munich (via Amsterdam) = £159  (KLM) *between 3.5 - 5hrs!

Birmingham to Munich (via Milan) = £132  (Alitalia) *4hr 25mins!

Gatwick to Munich = £88  (BA) 1hr 55mins

Manchester to Munich (via Milan) = £132 (Alitalia) *4h 45mins!

Stanstead to Munich = £45  (Easyjet)  1hr 50mins

Thanks Nexx, but those indirect flights from distant airports involve a lot of arsing about, lost time and taxi expense, whereas I live 30 mins from Heathrow and could get a lift there from a friend. Non-stop flight, 1h-45m. I can accommodate anyone overnight who wants to do the trip from England.

Aye, I put the other routes down because I know that Swoop would be interested in flying from Bristol or Birmingham.  The others are just for info if anyone from those locations are interested.

Even though we moved to Hannover now, sounds like a good idea!

Meet up for a 'test run' on the weekend? (ill be back in Munich for a few days) Just shoot a mail or a SMS...

Funny that.  There's a bar in Angel (Islington, London) I found a month ago that sells it.  Bit pricey mind you, but definately worth it. Managed to Gizit one of their glasses ;)

It's usually around £1.90 - £2 for 1/2 litre here.

Schatzi, what weekend were you thinking of?  I can't do this weekend since I have a friend over from the UK and might be going down to Neuschwanstein... not sure yet!

You'll have to drop in at Celle, it's a beautiful town not too far from Hannover!

They only really serve beer in a Maß in beer halls or beer gardens (not in normal bars/restaurants).  You can order 1/2 litres though it looks weird because the 1/2 litre glass looks dwarfed in comparison!  Plus when the girls are managing 1 litres and you're not, then you really feel like a poofter!  So stick to a Maß, unless you're having Weißbier of course which I think is only served in 1/2 litre glasses.

It was closer to £4 in London

Done with little aircraft.  Got to see and talk to Wittering but am not going to end up there.  Long wait now before the next stuff, like 14 months. More

Am doing "cool" stuff (Just checked the Met: -24.3 °C currently) sometime in the Autumn for a few months hence soon would be better.

Spent 8 years of my life in Germany.

4 years in Lahr and 4 years in Baden. I would go back at the drop of a hat.

Best beer in the world, and truth be told, the nicest people you could ever hope to meet.

I'm going back at my earliest opportunity. Sure do miss it.

To all who are going to be in Munich for Oktoberfest, have a couple for me!

Skuzzy, if you are at all able to go back even for a short visit...GO!
Who knows, you may even remember some of it this time;)

Wheat Beer! Dang, now I'm all thirsty and reminiscent and stuff!

(26 more posts and I'm a BBS ACE!)

Prost!

I completely agree.  Munich is the friendliest, cleanest, safest, tidyiest city I've ever been/lived in.  No vandalism, safe to walk around in the early hours, not seen any violence here in 9 months, good public transport system (compared to UK) and relatively cheap too (again compared to UK).  I would quite happily stay here for the rest of my life!

Cool!  I actually live down in Taufkirchen because it's 5 minutes walk to work in Unterhaching.  I live next to a S-Bahn though so it's really easy to get into the centre.

You lived in Max Weber Platz area then?

I've been very busy trying to see as much as I can but there's still plenty of things left to see!

I speak 'Biergarten German'! :)  I can order stuff and understand some stuff but I'm still learning!  Most of central Munich do speak English but it would still be very useful to have a native German speaker!

Hopefully this will turn into a good drunken, er, good aviation meet-up! ;)

Neg Tuc Nexx. :( Not saying it will never happen because I would dearly love to.  There are ways and means, we shall see.

Helos are the way forward apparently.  I'm not entirely convinced just yet, too many fragile things moving at far too fast a speed for my liking :lol

Weißbier is usually €2.80 - €3.00  (0.5 litre)

Maß is usually around €6.20 ish, depending where you go (1 litre).

Whereabouts are you located Redwing?  I will have two single beds going free, plus a sofa, which no one has requested yet so I'm more than willing to put you up to save on your hotel costs.

Have we all agreed on 13 - 17 October?  (Thurs to Monday)  This doesn't mean you have to come for all the days but these are are cheapest flight dates.

For those that are still interested then please send me an email (nexx@btinternet.com) specifying which days you'll be able to make and whether you need help with hotels and stuff.  I can put 2 people up comfortably and perhaps another on the sofa.
