"Same-sex legislation passed
Last Updated Tue, 28 Jun 2005 21:07:41 EDT
CBC News

The Liberals' controversial same-sex marriage legislation has passed final reading the House of Commons, sailing through with a vote of 158 for and 133 against.

    * INDEPTH: Same-sex Rights

Supported by most members of the Liberals, the Bloc Quebecois and the NDP, the legislation passed easily, making Canada only the third country in the world, after the Netherlands and Belgium, to officially recognize same-sex unions.

But the passage of Bill C-38, once again, came with a political price tag for the government. Joe Comuzzi, resigned from the cabinet so he could vote against the bill - an open rebuke of the government legislation.

Comuzzi was the minister responsible for Northern Ontario.

Although he was the only cabinet minister to break ranks with Prime Minister Paul Martin over the controversial plan to legalize the marriage of gays and lesbians, it highlighted the divisions within Canada and the within the Liberal party, pitting supporters of equality rights against those who are defending religious freedoms.

For Comuzzi, the decision to resign meant putting principles ahead of the privileges of cabinet. "In 2004, during the election, I promised faithfully to the people of Thunder Bay-Superior North, that I would defend the definition of marriage," he said, explaining his move.

The prime minister said he regretted the decision of a man he called an "old friend," but accepts it because the government must speak with one voice on same-sex marriage.

The "vote is about the Charter of Rights," said Martin. "We're a nation of minorities and in a nation of minorities you don't cherry-pick rights."

The government has moved over the last few the months to appease critics both within Liberal ranks and among Canadians at large. Amendments were introduced to ensure no religious group or charitable organization is forced to accept same-sex marriage. But in spite of those amendments some groups remain unconvinced.

Same-sex marriage remains one of the most difficult issues ever to confront Canadian politicians. In large part passage of the bill is the reason the parliamentary session was extended for the first time in 17 years.

But while Tuesday night's vote closes off the debate in the Commons, the Conservatives insist there is no closure for Canadians who believe marriage should continue to be defined as the union of a man and a woman, to the exclusion of all others.

Conservative Leader Stephen Harper says if his party forms the next government, the law will be revisited.

Harper made the promise one day after suggesting the adoption of the law lacked legitimacy because it relied on the support of the separatist Bloc Quebecois. Harper said he believes Bloc MPs are the legitimate representatives of Quebec voters. But he argues most Canadians aren't buying it as a final decision since most federalist MPs are opposed to same-sex marriage.

Harper says a Conservative government would hold a free vote for all MPs on the matter, rather than forcing cabinet ministers to vote with the government. "

It would be interesting to see what would shake down in a free vote, but that wont happen. Sadly, I see the Liberals getting in again, unless Harper can turn his ship around. He needs to focus a little less on the Liberal scandals, and more on his own party politics. The corruption of the Liberal govt should be obvious for most Canadians to see, now give us something positive to look to.

I read a report a few weeks ago that stated that the air quality, being cleaner than it has been in 50 years, was allowing more ultraviolet light through our atmosphere, resulting in higher average temperatures. Read: global warming.

We've got this **** too clean, we're killing ourselves!!

Its funny how different eastern and western Canada are. This bill was largely not supported out here. Good on Comuzzi for giving up his Cabinet post to vote against the bill. I'm not happy with the way the Liberals rammed this down our throats, but hey, by now I should be used to the eastern politics ruling the land. I dont care if gays want to have unions, and have all the rights, tax benefits etc. Just dont call it marriage. That is a tradition I would like to keep: a union between a man and a woman.

I guess the only hope now is for a Conservative majority to form, seeing as how the Bloc isnt supporting them on this, and that isnt going to happen anytime soon. Even if they did form a majority and pass a new bill, good luck getting it through the Liberal Senate.

Normally I am very proud to be Canadian. Not today.

I think calling a homosexual union a marriage is wrong. Let them have some kind of legal arrangement sure. And dont disciminate but dont call it a marriage.

I am not sure what has been passed but I support a legal union, and not a marriage.

the paid lamenting by the civies will be endless.

Ancient Egypt is creditted with the foundations of our marriage system, which at the time included acceptance of gay marriages.

Funny isn't it, traditional values, civilisation decaying - its nothing more than intolerant (usually Christian) bigotry. When all that is happening is these people are trying to do the right thing and be recognized for it.

He's in California. All the barbers were lined up, gang raped and shot by helmet wearing gangs of gay bikers in tight leathers 20 years ago.

To get a decent haircut from a straight guy, yah need to go at least as far east as Utah... even then, yah gotta ask how may wives the guy has first.. just to be sure.

My true love is the Empire State building. I am being denied my rights to marry it.

And it loves me, no matter how you try to spin it. I am being descriminated against because we can't marry.

I go to the same chinese woman to cut my hair for probly 20 years.   I am pretty sure she does womens hair too.   We had a "real" barber in town.   My head is too lumpy for crew cuts tho so I never went to him.   He went out of business before shaved heads became in vogue for the hair impaired... bad luck on his part or poor timing.

I guess that's better than wanting to marry your dog or cat......

That's not a good comparison for Nuke. After all, the dog and cat could run away, the building cannot and is therefore stuck with him.........:p
