Isn't the "box" like 10 bucks, with a "free" month? (talk about a technicality... why not just call it a monthly fee, because its anyway "10 bucks").
Also theres every once in a while free trials, in which you can simply download the client and play without a key during the free trial.
The game does split opinions, especially over here, although it has been getting more positive comments over time.
There really isn't any game alike, which would provide as realistic battle with WWII tanks, soldiers and airplanes, all in one battlefield.
It is worth a try at least.
Either 10 bucks or waiting for a free trial.

It was ok starting about a year ago. A different pace and game than AH which I'd grown bored with (and couldn't stand the MA demogrpahics any longer)
If you had a workhorse of a PC which could muscle the bugs and issues into mere minor distractions then it could be fun. But even then after a year and a few more patches those issues, and new ones, come back to expose some serious issues with the game that are hard to ignore.
WWIIO is most certainly *not* World War 2 "online." And there are no "realistic" battles at all. At least nothing like what would have witnessed in the real world.
Anyway. I was on the verge of unsubbing but wanted to wait to see what changes came about with this last patch. Now I am on my way o hit the unsubscribe button. The program performance is horrid again, the development team and phan bois are belligeren & obnoxious once more and gameplay took a nosedive off a cliff.
There is a reason non customers are not allowed to read (or post) on thier boards. If you could see what people are posting about you'd not give it another thought.
HOWEVER! If you have a bleeding edge PC (~4hgz CPU, oodles of mem and cutteing egde gfx card), love to roleplay as if you REALLY were in the military or get off acting like a Little Napoleon or Corporal "Adolph" and enjoy ordering other players around then you will LOVE the new WWIIO.
BUT! If you like to play solo or with a small squad for casual, fun, quasi-historical gameplay then keep walking.
Yeah. There's no other game like it out there. At this point in time that is not an endorsement believe me. Meaning it's a blessing that people who enjoy online games don't have more than this one amateur development team with serous PR problems and thier collective heads up each others rectum putting out a horrible peice of shat as bad as WWIIO v1.19

It gets the ole heart pumping like AH did long ago! :)
I enjoy it and get pretty good FPS.
Running an AMD XP2100 and a 9600 Pro.

It did for a quite while for me too Swager.
But after the learning curve flattened out and the game problems kept staring me in the face very time I logged on. I was also soon back to playing solo (which wasn't too bad at all) after leaving the 332nd to join my brother and his friends in thier new squad. That was a short lived group as they all quickly tired of the 90's graphics, performance problems and ridiculous gameplay issues: ex: airquake, campathon, impact grenades, con limits, inability to use mg tripod in windows, going prone only on flat terrain, etc. And so they went off to play 32+ player hosted games such as Band of Bros, Flashpoint, etc.
For me this latest release was the last straw. It's now a crap shoot finding action now (as a lone wolf). A game which wastes my online game time forcing me to "brigade hop" in order to find a group that has the same goal as me which is to have fun in player-vs- player combat.
Add in that CRS and the phanbois are happy reenacting 2001 all over again by attacking anyone with dissenting opinions on the current "vision." So I unsubbed this morning.

Well, i just started to come back to AH after having spent 1 year on ww2ol.
the new verson has completly ruined what they had good going for it. worst is the treatment crs employees are giving customers on the forum without listening to what they have to say about the matter.
its too bad theres no competition for a ww2 sim as bf1942 would probably be the closet to it (AH is a flight sim)

WW2online has some great eye candy and the sound effects are fantastic. I can remember logging in and hanging out at night during a cross river tank battle with the lights out and headphones on and as the 88 shells would wizz by I actually ducked in my chair, was very wild scene...
The community is very angry and unhelpful so dont expect much at first as far as help... There appears to be some cheating going on in the game but hopefully they have those issues worked out by now....
Everyone is a general and they love to tell you how to play the game as long as you dont ask for help...

You better have a top end machine, or deal with frame rates that spike down to 1 fps. And don't listen to the fanboi who says he is getting great frame rates, that's a crock. I have an asus a7n8x deluxe mobo, 1 gig ram(you have to have at least 1 gig of ram, that comes from the rats themselves), AMD barton 3000+, ATI 9800, and that gives me 20-50 fps in game, and it spikes down to ten alot. I have reformatted, updated drivers, and only downloaded ww2online(cause they said it must be spyware on my machine), and still the same. They say try NT compatibility, all kinds of things. You have to have a subscription to read alot of the forums so you can't read the complaints. If you value performance, ww2online has some issues to iron out.
I don't like the way the game is going, they are giving all the power to the high command staff. Soon you will be very limited to where you can spawn. They don't want you spawning anywhere now, they want to direct you where to spawn and who to play with. Alot of people are getting fed up with the high command BS. Alot of us who built up rank to post missions have had our ranked stripped. They say we haven't lost rank, it is still the same, but if you had the rank to post a mission and now you don't, you have lost rank. It's bad enough I had to build my rank in the LW flying 110's, heck, I was up to major posting p2 missions. Now I can't even post a mission, and if no one is around to post a mission where I want to be, I'm screwed.
The game has alot of upside, but right now with the new patch, it has alot of issues. Alot of people are pissed off, and alot of them are day one players. I am not happy myself, two people I play with have dropped their subs, and alot of others have dropped it because their rig won't run the game anymore.
If you get a free trial, check it out, nothing lost there. Like I said, it has alot of upside and can be alot of fun. I'm gonna give them til the end of august, if they have given more power to the high command to tell you where, when, how, and who to play with, i'm gone.

1.19 just came out, and I enjoy it a lot. My FPS is more stable in the air. I will admit I get 8 fps during heavy combat on the ground, but its still very playable and I like it.

WWIIOL is a good game and the 66th Commando(a squad made up of WB's and AH players - current and ex)enjoys it a lot.
Westy's and others comments are their own experience. Ours, the 66th's, is completely different.
To each his own.......
