I think 200,000,000 is a very conservative estimate. We've probably got 50,000,000 smoking pot right here in the USA. Your thoughts?

Having scanned the article, it's clear to me that..uh..what was the question again?

curb coca production? That's it next it'll be Pepsi.

"The number of people around the world taking drugs such as cocaine, heroin and cannabis rose last year by about 15 million to 200 million, the United Nations annual drugs report said on Wednesday"
What we need is some politician to propose and get passed a new law saying drugs are illegal.
Then we can say we got another law passed saying drugs are illegal and everyone will feel so good about themselves over this new law. And the politician can stand up and puff his chest out during his run for re-election and say "Vote for me because I got yet another law passed saying that drugs are illegal"
And everybody will because, hey, he did something, he got another law passed saying drugs are illegal. and that makes us feel good about ourselves even if it doesnt to anything to fix the problem.
We can at least say we passed a law

What's the problem? the UN is on it. Is there anything that they don't want to control in everyones lives?

Maybe one day the smokers will outnumber the non-smokers and the candidate from the bring-a-bottle party will get elected and revoke all those laws.

No no...the DEA are WINNING the war on drugs...according to them:
Or are they? (http://www.usdoj.gov/dea/demand/speakout/index.html)
I love the first point...it tends to contradict the UN's take on the situation:
"The Legalization Lobby claims that the fight against drugs cannot be won. However, overall drug use is down by more than a third in the last twenty years, while cocaine use has dropped by an astounding 70 percent. Ninety-five percent of Americans do not use drugs. This is success by any standards."
Not sure how someone wrote THAT gem with a straight face.

I had always wondered why the US had been pursuing a pointless "War on Drugs" for the last 30 years, but now I know; the evil UN made you do it.
You learn something new every day.
-
momus.. your country has no "war on drugs"? No pointless drug laws? I am not aware of a country like that... what is it? where is this free thinking country you are a citizen of so that we may appreciate better your critisizim of the U.S.?

Yes Lazs, whilst our own drug laws aren't as draconian as those of the US, our own authorities also pursue a pointless war on drugs and have done so for a while.
The point is that I don't blame the UN for it.
-
momus... where did I blame the UN? I am the one saying that the UN should be moved to ice bear country after we collect all the money they owe us for rent and parking tickets... I don't think we should take any collect calls from em either.
You, on the other hand, are saying that the U.S. "war on drugs" is bad when you are fighting the exact same war... Yet.. we hear no crys of anguish from you about your laws.. No condemnation of the UN for advocating a global war on drugs... Nope... as usual.. the only boogey man you see is the big bad US...
It is tiresome and hypocritical is all..

No, I called our own "war on drugs pointless as well, i.e:

The UN does what it's constituent members dictate. How much leverage do you think the UN would have in this area if its policies weren't in full accord with those of your own domestic politicians? For example, did the UN force the US to sign up to the 1961 Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs? No. What about the 1988 United Nations Convention Against Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances? Was the big bad UN threatening you with sanctions if the US didn't ratify it? Hardly.
I'm not being any more critical of the US than of the UK in this regard, just of you for blaming the UN for something that is totally in the hands of your own legislature. How you quite arrive from there to crying "amerihater" I'm not quite sure.

the war on drugs is corporate dictated socialism, what's wrong with cannabis don't all good christians enjoy it? like jesus did.

Hehe, cocaine usage may have gone down, but what're those meth usage numbers?
The "war on drugs" is just a huge waste.
...,but those DEA guys would surely hate to loose their jobs. And local governments that make money from property seizures, they love this little "war".
-
Furious, I agree.
The stats are either completely wrong or the DEA has deliberatley left "crack" out in their analysis. Crack is simply a different form of cocaine as far as I know. It's usage has SKYROCKETED over the past 5-10 years.

Are you saying Jesus didn't like to smoke a little weed now and then? Come on, how else is it possible for him to love his fellow man so much? ;) "I loove you, man" Hmm, on second thought, maybe it was the wine! :D
-
momus... you make no sense... me making fun of the silly and impotent UN is in no way the same as me "blaming" them for the war on drugs.
AS to me pointing out that you are quick to get upset about the US war on drugs but strangely mute about your countries exact same laws.... That is exactly what you did... it wasn't till after I pointed that out that yu conceded that your country might be just as bad.
It is all so hypoocritical... both the people who think the war on drugs is bad but at the same time think that the UN is the big brother that all humanity needs and.... the little socialists who take every opportunity to vilify the US for the exact same things that their countries do..
Tell you what.. clean up your own little country before you get too upset about what mine does.
