Title: War of the Worlds
Post by: Nefarious on June 29, 2005, 08:00:07 PM
Saw it today at 4, What a great film.

Special Effects were amazing, and the movie had me holding my breath for a few sequences.

Of course knowing the ending, after the book, and the original movie. It still was awesome.

Definatley see it.

good to hear.

the local "movie critic" bellybutton in the paper said it sucked, and gave it 2 stars.

How badly did Tom Crazy suck it up?

1- Like Cartman's Mom
2- Like a Hoover on steroids
3- Like a Dust Buster

For the record, I though Tom Cruise sucked before I thought he was crazy.  Now I think he sucks AND he's crazy.

For the record, he isn't any different than when he wasn't getting bellybutton from a fine woman alot younger than him named Katie Holmes.

I got 5 bucks that says she's going to destroy him and tear his heart out and eat it.

That guy has lost all control of himself.

Tom Cruise, while not one of my favorite Actors still played a great role.

He was playing the Divorced Father, How do you take care of Children Role. Cruise was discovering how to keep his family alive during the end of the world. And he did a good job.

Of course, The movie was rated PG13, which kind of turned me off from the beginning. It definatley freaked my Girlfriend out, and Children in the Audience began crying. LOL. So beware if you have children.

Its a great suspense Flick, along the lines of Signs. I liked Signs, especially for the suspense. But this was far more Graphic and way more intense.

I laughed real hard when they were escaping New Jersey, Followed by Martians. Dakota Fanning, says, "Daddy is it the Terrorists?!?"

It left me with a feeling of like, What would happen if you were in that situation? If I were in that movie, I would have been Tim Robbins. :D

GO See it, Its good.

I believe johnney depp is the one thats crazy and sucks. from the remake of charley and the chocolate facroty, i see depp as a wacko and a crazy person, kinda like wacko jacko. I think depp has a secret life in the chocolate factory as a homosexual pervert that has a sick fetish with the oompa loompas.  I think it will bomb bigtime.  Gene Wilder is the original wonka in the chocolate facroty, never will see anyone else as willy wonka.

Agreed but I always thought Gene Wilder sucked too.
Never saw him in a movie I thought he was good enough to be in.

and before ti gets mentioned
Young Frankenstein was a great movie. But not because of Wilder.

Honestly. I HATED willy wonka when I was a kid.

And when I heard they were doing a remake I rolled my eyes and silently thanked God we have so many TVs and DVD players in the house LOL

Actually I didnt like alot of the kiddie movies that were out or popular when I was a kid. Didnt even really like The Wizard of Oz cept for a couple of scenes and I remember my favorite "funny" movie when I was a kid being "Its a Mad Mad Mad Mad World"
Or "Those Amazing Young Men in Their Flying Machines"

I remember my mother putting on Heidi thinking I might enjoy it and I bout thought she was trying to torture me.  Not long into it I remember moaning and groaning that there HAD to be something else on and even suggesting to check to see if the news was on yet. Much to my fathers delight. He didnt want to see it either. Course she accused him of cohersing me which was totally untrue.

YOU WERE RIGHT!!  NEWS AT 11!!

From an investigating detective:
Quote
"That Wonka guy—we should have known," said one detective close to the investigation. "The signs were all there. I’ve been working vice for twenty years, and let’s just say you don’t often find a guy with a purple coat and comb-over who isn’t the head of a sex ring. The man’s name is Willy for crying out loud."

We must be around the same age.  I remember the first two movies that I ever saw in a movie theater.  I must have been around 5 or 6 when my dad took me to see "2001: A Space Odyssey."  I remember everyone leaving the theater with a "Huh?" look on their faces.  Dad admitted when I was older that he had thought it was going to be more like a Buck Rogers movie, lol.  The second movie I ever saw was "Those Magnificent Men In Their Flying Machines."  I remember liking that one.  Wonka was #3 I believe.  I recall having mixed feelings about that one.  I remember being a little disturbed with the grandparents sleeping arrangements, lol.  :)

tom thumb crusie is terrible.  He is of the sean penn, nickolous cage tim robbins school of overacting... he doesn't cry quite as much tho onscreen but stil.   And like sob... I disliked the guy even before he left no doubt he was a nutso.

Much as I dislike his acting I wanted to see the film.  Was it any good?

Tom Cruise doesn't even begin to reach Nicholas Cage levels in horridness.. you must be joking.

Cage is like Richter 10 level in horrible. Cruise is a mild 5 at most.

I thought the original wonka with wilder was terrible. I thought the ONLY thing wilder was half decent in was Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstien. I have no intention in wasting time to see the remake of wonka.

As to any hollyweird "celebrity's" private life, I don't care and don't pay any attention. To me they are all phoney people and beneath notice except when pretending to be something they are not on the screen. This excludes a few who were real people like Jimmy Stewart and others who put on a uniform and served.

Nicholas Cage, yeah, blecch.  I thought he was OK in a couple of things when I first started seeing him in flicks, then he started annoying me more and more, until I saw Face Off, which capped it for me.  That's also probably when I OD'd on Travolta.

Saw 'War of the Worlds' last night.  If you have not heard the original broadcast of Orson Welles doing the story, find it and listen to it.
If you have not seen the original movie, then see it.

There are some subtle and not so subtle things in this version relating to the above.

I went with a group of people and everyone agreed.  Intense.  However, there are some aspects which are flat out wrong, in terms of "Why?" questions.  You will get those shortly after the movie ends.
It is a movie which needs to be seen on the big screen to really get into it.  I do not think the small screen can do it justice.
The effects are outstanding.

A comment on Spielberg.  He is getting dark in his old age.  There is one scene I felt could have been left out.  You'll figure it out.

On a related note, John Woo made his last decent movie back when he was in Hong Kong.

Is Katie Holmes a sex bomb? Well maybe not, she looks like a girl next door. But.. 20 years is 20 years if you know what I mean.

If you don't - well..

That one was pretty rough and I questioned it, but the one by the river really got me.

I understand why they are there, but whoa.

Which reminds.  I would not take any kids to see this movie.  No way.

Oh....Ohh.....

When they arrived at the Ferry.

If so yes, it was graphic. But...

It went very well (IMO) with the flow of things, In a situation of Panic and hoplessness, Humans become Animals. I think it depicted the savagery of people very well. So it was really dark, but I think SS was trying to put the fear of the situation into the audience, And with that scene he grabbed a lot of peoples attention.

does anybody read books nowadays?

War of the Worlds started out as a book by another (H.G.) Wells, still IMO one of the best Sci Fi writers ever.

War of the Worlds the book was a bit melodramatic from our jaded 21st century perspective, but the way it described an alien invasion is yet unmatched.
'Time Machine' is another excellent book by H.G. Wells, again, nobody has come close in describing time travel and a possible future like Wells did, not even Poul Anderson.

I read it, and liked the book also. That's why I went to see the movie. I just tried not to compare the movie with the book to much and enjoy it for what it was..a remake based on a book.
