since the news that ATI would only be release catalyst control center drivers from 5.8 onwards i decided to try the CCC for the first time with 5.6..... and i must say i perfer the standard control panel MUCH MUCH MORE than the CCC. Its slow, and buggy and doesnt improve anything :(

ok but do they work with the older cards like my 9600xt, or are they tuned for the x series just like ati's?

I only have a Radeon 9600 SE Vid Card w/128

Will these new drivers work on that card and if so, where can I get them?

ATI's CCC is built on top of the .NET framework, which is a pig.

ATI users should not use the Catalyst Control Center if you want to get the best performance from your computer and 3D graphics.

If you have a pre X8xx series video card, you should use the Catalyst 4.12 drivers as they appear to work best for older ATI cards.

If you have an X8xx series card, or newer, use the latest drivers from ATI.

That is a general rule.  As with any video card technology, the various applications you are running will have an impact on what ever driver you are using.

Thanks folks for the help.

Skuzzy,
The drivers I found at the Omegadrivers.net site were
"2.6.25 (Catalyst 5.4 and 5.6)"

According to your email, I should be using an older Catalyst version in an ATI Radeon 9600SE.
Where could I find that one?
If the older isnt available, would this be better than the driver that came with the card?

Thanks Again for the advice

The 4.12's are available at ATI, you just need to poke around for "previous" drivers. That's how I found em :)

Instructions for proper install of video drivers.

Pick 1 driver:

Nvidea - http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp - go here and download the drivers to your desktop.

ATI - http://www.ati.com/support/drivers/....x=5&submit.y=4 - go here and download the drivers to your desktop.

Omega tweaked drivers. Recommended by Nvidea and ATI - http://www.omegadrivers.net/main.php - go here and download the drivers to your desktop.

Now get this:
http://www.driverheaven.net/cleaner/ - Put it on your desktop

Now install DRIVER CLEANER

Go to add and remove programs and remove all references to ATI or Nvidea.

Restart in safe mode. Usually by clicking the f8 button during reboot.

DO NOT INSTALL ANYTHING if windows asks.

.

Run DRIVER CLEANER AND CLICK THE CLEAN button.

Then restart. DO NOT INSTALL ANYTHING once again. It's ok, all will be well :)

When you reach your desktop click on the driver you downloaded and follow prompts.

Restart..

If you have any problems read the helpfile that comes with DRIVE CLEANER.

I found the driver and downloaded it. I'll play with it tomorrow as I know if I did it now; I'd be screwed for TOD.,

Thanks very much to all.
