Totally awesome.

The scene in Battleground where Van Johnson starts to cut and run at the railroad tracks fire fight and his buddy follows, saying he's with him and they end up setting up an ambush.

The Hell's Angels scene where the dirigible needs to be lightened and the crew abandons ship by walking out the bomb bay.  Later the scene showing the dirigible  on fire from the viewpoint of the brothers who had just crash landed, and the airship coming down directly on top of where they were.  Many great scenes in that movie.

The scene in Run Silent, Run Deep where Clark Gable's  submarine takes on the enemy sub by firing torps under the decoy ship.

The scene in Devil's Brigade where the misfits stop fighting among themselves upon hearing the Canadian's marching into camp with bagpipes and in formation.  Then the bar fight scene with the lumberjacks  in that same movie.

Gary Owen. It's called 'Gary Owen'.

"GARY OWEN!"

Let Bacchus' sons be not dismayed
But join with me, each jovial blade
Come, drink and sing and lend your aid
To help me with the chorus:
(Chorus)
Instead of spa, we'll drink brown ale
And pay the reckoning on the nail;
No man for debt shall go to jail
From Garryowen in glory.
We'll beat the bailiffs out of fun,
We'll make the mayor and sheriffs run
We are the boys no man dares dun
If he regards a whole skin.

Chorus
Our hearts so stout have got no fame
For soon 'tis known from whence we came
Where'er we go they fear the name
Of Garryowen in glory.

Sounds like this one SoA.

XF-120

One of the first postwar epics to be filmed at Edwards Air Force Base was the Warner Brothers’ "Toward the Unknown." The plot of this 1956 adventure drama was centered here as well. William Holden starred as an ill-starred ex-combat pilot who had dishonored himself by yielding to brutal Communist brainwashing techniques. No longer allowed to fly, he burned for a chance to return to the cockpit and redeem his reputation.

A highly experimental new jet plane finally gave him an opportunity to clear his name and once more serve his country. Faith, courage, and romance triumphed over a general’s skepticism. James Garner made his film debut as Major Joe Craven. "Toward the Unknown" was released in Great Britain that same year, under the title "Brink of Hell." n a film of this nature, the aircraft which appear are usually at least as interesting as the human actors. Several interesting ones starred in this thriller.

The rare Martin XB-51 three-engined bomber made an appearance as the "Gilbert XF-120," and airplane buffs still seek out footage of the rocket-powered Bell X-2 and the Douglas X-3 "Stiletto" research planes. Interestingly, the real-life fame of one of the anonymous F-94C "Starfire" pilots in the action scenes far outlasted the movie itself. Lt. Col. "Pete" Everest, an experimental test pilot who flew most of the X-planes before retiring as a brigadier general, was chief of the Flight Test Operations division.

Numerous other planes from the Flight Test Center also appeared in this film: the XF-92A (masquerading in the movie as a F-102A), F-100 and F-101, the Douglas B-66 and a mighty Convair B-36. Whatever the movie’s qualities might have been as judged by later standards, its lineup of airborne talent was impressive.

Mmmmm, no this one was all prop planes.  They had an old fashioned diving suit rigged to provide pressure and oxygen at high altitude.  I know the one you are talking about though, another good movie.

Which reminds me of yet another good one, Jimmy Stewart flying experimental bombers.........Strategic Air Command.

Thought of another one, then I'm to bed.  I haven't seen this one in a long time.  I need to record it next time it comes on, if it ever does.

In the movie "The Naked and the Dead", the scene where the island invasion started and for a brief  moment, it showed real footage (?) with a line of tanks on a hilltop firing ripple salvos, along with ship firing scenes.  The tank scene lasted about 30 seconds at most, but it was in there with the ship action.  Very somber scene in the movie along with the mood the music set.

Larence of Arabia -
When Larence, a no name officer before he left,  comes back to the officers club after crossing the one desert to take the port and then another desert to shock his command to report that the port was taken.

When his army comes across the Turk army just after they had destroyed the home village of one of the soldiers in Larence's army....  "No prisoners!"

Devils Brigade - When they took the outpost on top of the hill... then Cliff Roberts dies.

Patton -
Opening scene where he gives his speech in front of the American Flag.  ( can you imagine seing that movie in a theater when it first came out!  Must have been awesome)

ooh ooh, I saw that one recently. Fred McMurray was the test pilot who died, and as he was spinning out of control in his Grumman Duck (at least that was what it looked like) he was pinceling final notes about heating the oxygen tube, or something,  to prevent icing at alt. Then he blacked out from lack of O2.

Many moons ago, when I was just a young lad, I saw a movie about tank warfare during World War II.  In my entire life I've only seen it once, but it presented the dangers faced by American tankers against German armor in very realistic fashion.

In one of the opening scenes a Tiger held a roadblock against an advancing American tank force, knocking out Sherman after Sherman.  It was finally destroyed by a single Sherman that slipped through the woods and slipped up on it's exposed flank.

In another scene, the same unit was traveling up a shallow river when it ran into an infiladed 88mm anti-tank gun.  Same story as with the Tiger.  A 75mm round from a Sherman's low-velocity gun eventually smashed through the earthen berm surrounding the gun and killed the crew.

Anyway, a desperate young tank crewman requested an interview with the unit's commanding general and asked for help in remedying the situation.  The general assigned one of the new M-26 Pershings, which had just arrived in the theater, to the young tanker's unit.

To this day, I cannot remember the title of that movie...undoubtedly a little remembered or acclaimed "B" war flick...but I've always liked it for it's accurate representation of the tank war that raged in Europe.

For Best Combat Spectacle, I'd go with the D-Day drop sequence in Band of Brothers

For best extended dramatic combat sequence, gotta go with Little Round Top in Gettysburg

For Best Small Unit combat sequence, gotta be Brecourt Manor from Band of Brothers.

And for best comic moment (not forced comic relief), without a doubt, it's Steve McQueen in Hell is for Heroes. Bob Newhart plays a clerk shanghaied into McQueen's outmanned platoon. Somebody's trying to show Newhart which end of the rifle to hold, and a round goes off, almost hitting McQUeen in the next foxhole. He locks those laser eyes on Newhart, doesnt look away or say a word -- while he moves his grease gun to the side nearest Newhart's hole and clicks the safety off....

just nuttin more to say.

Same movie....The Aussie SAS and the US Army 'fight night' between a huge hairy spider and a scorpion at SAS Hill,Nui Dat. RSVN
Lots of money being laid down on each critter.
The spider (the Aussie contender) appears to be absolutely owning the scorpion, so it gets crushed by a US Army boot........the fight night then begins, fists, boots, teeth, nails, ammo boxes, iron pickets, water canteens.... you name it, they hit each other with it, greatest movie all-in-brawl of all time.

Not a movie, but a Tele mini series...ANZACS, two private Diggers strolling through the bazaa in Cairo come across a bemeddled Brit officer, smartly saluting everything he passes.....they completely ignore him, much to his disgust...."You there!! Don't you salute in your Army??!!"  ...."We used to , but we're trying to give it up."

We Were Soldiers..The scene where they are talking about how the Sioux fought as a family unit....."Any of you little sons of *****es calls me Grandpa, I'll squealing kill ya"  Sam Neil is it?, the old guy anyway...they show the looks on some of the 'little sum*****es' faces, they believe him.

The Odd Angry Shot is brilliant...the blue over the spider/scorpion fight is a ripper (although for the record, the aussies start it)..Graham Kennedy and Bryan Brown are legends.

The non saluting Aussie was Paul Hogan, and the old bloke in We Were Soldiers was Sam Elliot.

You maybe interested to hear Blue, they're making a film with Sam Worthington called Long Tan...hopefully it'll be a good one

Ta Tronski, knew it was Sam Someone, my Mum idolises the guy.

I just figured it woulda been a Yank that started it, Diggers being bronzed gods who can do no wrong ;)

Long Tan should be interesting, hope they get it something like close to the true events, will keep an eye out for that one.

Not a war movie, but allmost, and a cool scene.....The scene in Mad Max where Max is sitting in 'The Interceptor' with his bluedog and opens the can of dogfood...then eats it himself.
They must have used a stand in mutt, a true Bluey woulda tore his throat out for a transgression like that.
Sucked bigtime when Bluey wore a crossbow bolt :(

Battle of Britain -
Where the Polish pilot bails out and lands in a field, a couple of farmers approach him and he says "Good Morning" in an accent.
Farmers relpy - "Good morning? Get your hands up you bosch bast***"

Same film Michael Caine waiting to take off -
"The engines overheating and so am I, we either get up or blow up"

Blackhawk Down-the scene where D-boy  Hoot sticks his head in the Blackhawk that's being looted, and says in Somalian,"I believe this is mine!"
