Title: The Mexican Stamp Controversey
Post by: Curval on July 01, 2005, 01:35:13 PM
News article here (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20050701/ap_on_re_la_am_ca/mexico_fox_interview)

A cut and paste from the above:

"In our country, the image of black people is one of enormous goodwill, which is reflected not only in characters like Memin Pinguin, but in popular songs ... like 'Little Black Watermelon,'" a song about an unruly black boy.

LOL!!!!

Surely they aren't serious.

Numbnuts like that are responsible for us Brits losing the gollywog off our jars of marmalade.

with the relations strained in the last few weeks with Fox's comments and stuff here in the US, i am thinking this was just the thing to push it over the edge.

i find it sad sometimes when the race card is drawn so quickly by some certain promintent poeple here in the US.

do they honestly think a country would intentionally do something like that to put down a race?

Ok, the image is admittedly offensive...

Rather like the old Gollywogs (http://www.sterlingtimes.co.uk/golliwog.htm) (ever have one of those when you were a kid? I had one who sat on my bed next to Andy Pandy).

Then again, I wish we could get down to discussing some of our more substantial beefs with our neighbors to the south, drugs, illegal immigration, and religious persecution immediately come to mind. But what do I know. Besides the Stamp is a slam dunk.

Wasn't this whole affair started by a "whos' illegal immigrants were better for american economy" argument?  Was a row between Africa and Mexico at first but last I heard central and south america were upset too because they believe their illegal immigrants are better than either Africa or Mexico.

PS whats a gollywog?  some kid who follows his older brother around constantly proclaiming "Gee Wally this"  "Gee Wally that"

or is that a WallyGee....Im confused......

I put a link in under Gollywogs in my post above, which will take you to a site giving you a brief background. I'd recommend you also memorize the content of the homepage this comes from, including references to Daleks, Wombles, Magic Roundabouts, etc. It will make Swoop, Curval, Beet, and occasionally even me easier to understand.

People need to get over being offended by every little thing and move on to more important things.  If I were worried about a negative image of blacks, I'd be more pissed off about that windbag Al Sharpton shooting his mouth off.

BTW...To Seagoon - I already know what Daleks are, and I just finished watching the latest season of Doctor Who.  I love it, and I'm not ashamed to admit it! :D

what color is he supposed to be? Purple?

somehow I wouldnt expect him to be the blond haired blue eyes type anymore then I would expect to hear a mexican speak with an Irish brough.

Or is it only ok for... nevermind. I'll let somene else say it

I just used Gollywog 3 times in a sentence. Not committing that word to my everyday vocabulary would be a shame.
