Title: FUBAR ,meaning?
Post by: airbumba on July 06, 2005, 12:09:51 AM
Hey folks. I know what snafu means, but what's fubar? And is that what Hank's character cpt. Miller said when they seen the glider that fell like a rock cause they put plating on the floor to protect a general, causing the thing to glide like a granite frisbee?

I have an idea, but I'm not sure. Heard different variants.

Thanks in advance for any clarification.

(BTW, if i was there, i woulda invented an acronym (sp?) of cussing every second day).

Thanks for the quick answer, that's what I thought, (was told), not FUBA..reason. Someone told me the reason thing, and I just thought the word 'reason' didn't sound , right.

Don't know much about it, except it describes a hopeless situation.  In painting for instance, it's when a painter overworks the painting and makes a muddy looking mess.

Looked  it up on Wikipedia and this is what it said:

FUBAR likely had its origins in the German word Furchtbar, meaning frightful, or terrible. It is pronounced with a soft cht, and probably made the transition during World War II because foo had been popularized in American culture, appearing in a 1938 Warner Brothers Daffy Duck cartoon and the comic strip Smokey Stover.

Electronics engineers say that snafu and fubar were used before the war by repairmen sent out to repair phone booths. They had to report the situation at arrival to the scene, often on a very bad line, so they developed these acronyms to make themselves understood.

I admire the attention to detail in that movie. When he's at the church, talking to the sarge about the kids who served under them, when the shaky hand first shows itself. He's standin in the doorway, and all across the horizon, there's explosions, but they be too far to hear. But they're  casting a silhuette, great work.

On a side note, I just purchased at an auction, an authentic Canadian artillery map for Caen, and three French maps of the whole Normandy area.

NTFU: Now, that's ****ed up!

Edited upstream was FUBB: ****ed up beyond belief

& FUBB2: ****ed up beyond belief also.

SNAFU: a little history.. my father in law served in Destroyers in WWII, Pacific Theatre. His ships action record reads like the battle plan of the pacific.. almost every major engagement USS Chauncey was there. The Chief of the Boat told him a story about how his squadron of 11 destroyers, charging down the California Coast at flank speed on a foggy stormy night ran right up on the rocks at Point Honda.. stranding 7 of them hard aground, sinking two. With Chauncy's bow jamed between a cleft in the boulders on the beach, breakers all around her, the captain stormed onto the bridge and snapped to the OOD 'Situation?'

The OD replied.. 'Normal; sir. All ****ed up."

And that's where SNAFU comes from.

My Dad went to sea on a 300 ton freighter out of New Orleans to Argentina in the late 30s.  He was 2nd mate, after being oiler and then fireman.  He tried to keep the ship from running aground at Pernambuco, Brazil as 3rd mate on watch.  Wasn't his job but he happened to step out of the wheelhouse and saw a reef ahead.  Turned the ship so hard it knocked the capt out of bed and he was very p'od.  2nd mate lost his job and Dad was promoted..  They sailed the ship onto the beach for repairs that lasted one month.  During that time he lived in an old Spanish fort amongst Indians.  None of the crew wanted to leave when the time came, but they went on down to Buenos Aires.  He did this work for a couple years.

He told me they listened to the Graf Spee battle on the radio during one of these voyages, and saw it upon arriving to Buenos Aires.  He was in the middle of world war two.

Please, that was one of the worst movies ever.

FUBAR -- ****ed up beyond all recognition (not repair).

SNAFU -- Situation normal **TO** all ****ed up.  (The "to" is an important part of that phrase).
