I wonder how much Chirac's comments the other day weighed in on this decision at a subliminal level?
“The only thing they (the English) have ever done for European agriculture is mad cow,” Chirac quipped, according to the paper, prompting laughter from Schroeder and Putin.
When asked about Chirac’s reported comments, French government spokesman Jean-Francois Cope told reporters, “I have nothing particular to say.”
Relations between France and Britain were already at a low point, with British Prime Minister Tony Blair and Chirac blaming each other for the failure of June talks on the European Union’s long-term budget talks.
Blair, who took over the EU presidency last week, has particularly irked Paris with his drive to cut EU farm subsidies that mainly benefit France.
'Country with the worst food'
Chirac took the opportunity of a receptive audience to snipe at British food. “You can’t trust people who cook as badly as that,” he joked, the paper said.
“After Finland, it’s the country with the worst food.”
He then told Putin and Schroeder how former NATO Secretary General George Robertson, a Scot, had made him try an unappetizing Scottish dish.
“That’s where our problems with NATO come from,” he said.
The race between Paris and London to host the 2012 Olympic Games is further testing relations. Blair wrote in the Paris-based International Herald Tribune newspaper on Monday that London was the “perfect venue” for the games.

I think his comments to the committee had more of an influence:
"You can put your trust and faith in France, you can trust the French, you can trust us."
lol...

Skies are sunny in London as usual I see. :D
This is cool, because I would be more inclined to go to the UK for the Olympics than anywhere else.

I was very excited when they opened the (brown) envelope.
It means London types get a new infrastructure and Real Britain pays for it. Thanks.

You mean they will teach you to drive your cars on the correct side of the street? :)
-
I saw a few of your two wheel Deutchlanders with no idea which side of the street to be on in the Dolomites this year. Two of em were on the way to the hospital. Crazy buggers, as the Isle of Man TT casualty figures will attest to. ;)

Chirac wisecracked that "the only thing [the British] have ever given European farming is mad cow." The Russian and the German laughed and laughed. On a roll, Jacques ridiculed British food. "You can't trust people who cook as badly as that. After Finland, it's the country with the worst food."
Since there were at least two Finns on the Olympic venue selection committee, did Jacques torpedo the Paris bid?
-
If you watched the broadcast, you saw that Madrid had the best overall planning for stadiums, transportation, and lodging. Not that it matters much tho... it's all politics and $$.

When the olympics get there, the offical food will be fish and chips, and the official drink will be lager.
-
congrats.
But why would anyone want them.
Typically millions are spent to built facilities for the thing and only get used once.
In the long run dont they usually end up loosing more money from them then making?
-
Furball I can't say anything If you don' t remember Atlanta ,Salt Lake City etc...
IOC members are corrupt, nothing new.
And nowhere I pretend we didn't used the same tool, I'm not so hypocrite.

Los Angeles made so much money that the extra profit was put into an investment fund. The income from that fund is used for facility maintenance and grants to sports organizations.
LA was the first profit maker in quite a while and has been the model for subsequent games.

Chirac's biggest blunder was getting involved. Getting caught off camera slagging the IOC's members food must be ranked up there with Berlusconni.
-
So many useless and corrupt politicians in Europe it's hard to keep up.
-
Thank you London!
As someone who lives relatively close to NYC, I'm very happy
to see that circus go somewhere else. Best of luck to you guys.

Found out some particulars:
An announcement by the LAOOC that $222.7 million in profits had been made astonished the world and renewed interest in future Olympics. Those profits were divided between the United States Olympic Committee and the LAOOC which funded, among other things, an Amateur Athletic Foundation based in Los Angeles.
227 million goes to better than half a billion today after inflation.
Peter Uberroth (LAOOC Chairman) showed how it's done, so Olympics since '84 have faired much better than before '84.
Seoul made over $300 million profit
-
I stand corrected.
I was under the impression that long term they end up loosing money on the deal
-
I was here in '84, and people moaned and groaned about Uberoth selling out the Olympics until the profits started flowing.
On a side note, I've never seen LA cleaner than during the summer of 1984.

Anyways I agree; Chirac has been too good friend with Berlusconi and mocking British and Finnish food was the last nail.
-
Not exactly Staga it show ignorance, british food is fine provided you use recipes created before the 18th century.
For the Finnish one I've not a good experience but it's not creative and a bit rustic ,IMO nothing wrong with that.
-
What's all this fuss about the food? I thought that Haggis was French? Sheeps Stomach , deep fried in a pound of butter.
-
Moscow area has TONS of stadiums and provides cheapest price for transportation.
I wonder why IOC listed Moscow all the way to #5 list...?
Btw I really want to see NY host a game.
-
Russia is too dangerous place; for example VERY large Japanese electronic equipment manufacturer (TVs, cameras, hifi) has the storage for Russian sales in Finland.
IF it would be in Russia it would need guards with assault rifles and even then it would be robbed once per month.

Food in Britain is fine. we had an empire once and many of its former inhabitants live here! You can eat trad English fare, fantastic Indian, Thai, Chinese, Caribean. Plus food from all ocver Europe and of course the Americas. All this in almost every UK city.
I've sampled French Cuisine a few times. Every time I was dissapointed. I expected culinary excellence and got culinary excrement. Maybe I was unlucky but its happened more than once to be just a one off.
-
How many times can Rule #4 be invoked! :lol
-
so my post is not misconstrued...
i was talking about the french pop singer Alizee, who is HOT as all-git-out, but sings like a decapitated llama.
some may remember her as my avatar ; )

british food is fine, if you have tastebuds, and like food that fills you.

Merde!
;)
WTG Brits! Summer 2012 promises to be a great time for a London visit, Wimbledon and the Olympics in one city! Now do something about the weather.. :)
-
It'll be the first completely indoor Olympics...althought I suppose you can row in the rain :)
There was nothing but whingeing about the olympics when we had it, but when it was on everyone got into the spirit (including myself) and had an absolute ball....one of the best experiences of my life was going off to a couple of events and experiencing the spirit of the games...
But then we're aussies...not poms :p

I didn't wrote food in britain but british food, and especially the post victorian tragedie.

I'm curious to know what is "French food", in the british example I used ,I narrowed to a special period where the cooking as gone pretty bad.
