Title: Time to say Goodbye
Post by: Adjuster on July 06, 2005, 06:30:12 PM
I said hello to the good people of Aces High in 2001 and was soon recruited into the Firebirds by Nexx.

Over the past 4 years I have had a blast and apart from trips to the Carribbean (thanks to Floyd Michelle and Ivan) I have been online and been 190 fodder (205 Spit 9 109 et al fodder) almost every week for 4 years.

However it is now time for me to say goodbye to Aces High.

I have grown up.

However the MA has not !

When I started this game was as good as it gets. Now however it is no longer good enough for me.

I have explained to HTC what my reasons are and hope to find a better place in future.

I will keep an eye on things here and will be back if the product is back on the top or near to the top.

Sorry to see you go Adjuster. I hope you find what you are looking for, but I doubt you will.

I don't know you but I have to ask, Do you feel better now that you dropped the cheap shot bomb on this BBS?

This is not an attack on you. I just don't know why folks seem to think they have to attack HTC/AH when they are no longer interested in playing anymore. I haven't been here long enough to know what "the good old days" were like, but I've been around long enough to know that the "good old days", no matter they were, are never comming back. It is futile to wish that they will.

I hate to say this Clifra but the good old days are NOW. :)

I've been around for 12-13 years now and guess what? Everyday is the good old days as long as you come, enjoy yourself and have a good time with the friends you've made as a result of the game.

As far as history? Every flight you make goes into the history books, if you get my drift. Each flight has something different to offer because you are not playing against a computer but another, thinking (sometimes anyway) human being and when you get your squad together and take some far off field it's just one more thing to remember about how much fun the game is giving you. Those that participated in the mission will remember it and those that fought to stop your mission will also remember. Even those that see the base capture message will remember it, albiet sometimes fleetingly.

So new or old the game is refreshing each time you take to the sky!

I can do nothing but agree with you Ren. I am just about to complete my 1st year in AH and I am enjoying it very much. Sure there are things that annoy me but not so that I would think about quitting.

My comment was that I see so many people in here lamenting the "by gone days" when the MA was supposed to be so great and how bad it is now.  I am sure there were people "back then" who were doing the same thing. It's a futile pipe dream. You can't go back there and when you try it is always a disapointment. This is truth in AH and in Real Life.

I'm having a blast and don't want to see much of anything changed.

Clifra my post may not be to your taste but I dont think I have won the "Cheap Shot Of The Day" Award.

I have met and spoken to a lot of people in this game over the last 4 years and was saying goodbye and letting them know why I was leaving i.e. I am not bored , not broke, not getting divorced etc.

It probably wasnt the most eloquent post in history but I wont and purposefully didnt attempt to slag off this game or HTC because for me for a long time and for many people this game still is "The Dogs Bo**ocks" of online flight combat.

Maybe I should have said that I evolved quicker than this game.

Anyway  To those people who knew me "Happy Hunting"  To those that didnt you just lost an easy kill (usually in a Spit IX or Tiffie)

Actually, we who have flown for a long time do have memories of days gone by. Of blood dragons, parking a vader on the end of the runway and popping dweebs trying to take off and laughing so hard we were falling out of our chairs, then taking off with 25 kills and landing em. And of taking the same invaders and firing off rounds and dropping bombs until you could get the plane light enough to dogfight in it. Spin dweeb 38's , scenarios, and so many more. There was the time when I was learning, just a spit dweeb chasing after a bunch of Damned on some mission to the back side of the enemy's map to get em all lathered up.  The list goes on.....

But let's look at both sides.

Would I go back? To a lousy flight model with lousy connects? Back when a warp was warp. When you saw a guy coming at you a D800 then dont look back cause he got there at 100 yds in the time it took for you look back. Or, a warping plane that had a trail, kinda like star trek. Hehe.  And, a normal FR of 12-14 then finally upgrading my computer so I could get a solid 17 FR. Woooo Hoooo! Hell no! How about a 300, 1200 and 2400 baud modem's? Boy, what a hoot when we got 14.4K now that was fine!!!! How about the total number of icons you could see at one time was 12? or was it 13? Now thats a dim memory. Imagine when the 14th and 15th guy showed up and you didnt even know he was in the area until you died from a no see-um.How about the never ending "2 weeks" that they would tell us would be when a "NEW" improved update would be out? Or a dog and pony show at the CON where they'd tickle our fancy with some crap that would'nt ever did come to pass. The other game that many got their roots from did progress....a little.

Now let's take a second look at what ya'll have now.

AH wasn't around very long before they came out with AH2. TOD is around the corner. Is all this easy? You take a guess. They continuously come out with updates and changes, some of which I think stink but at least they are staying up with fixes and new things. Show me one other game that is and can handle 500+ people up doing something in a huge arena other than walking around? Some folks are so spoiled they don't know just how good they have it.

But, like all cutting edge games. If you don't keep up with the technology by keeping your own gaming gear up to date, don't expect to get the most from the game. The owners/programmers of this game continue to forge ahead with new and improved gaming.

So back to those of us who have lived some of the history...yes we were there and enjoyed what we had, we are here now and enjoying what's here for us. You, who are just getting started, may look back to today in ten years and say, "boy, we sure had fun but todays game sure has changed alot over the years".

IMHO come, enjoy, make long lasting friendships, and make your own history while you enjoy the game.

'nuff said :)

I'd quit too if I thought I could.  As it is, I just don't show up much.

What concerns me is that the people who subscribe for historical-like fights seem to be leaving and are being replaced by archade players.

If I were HTC I would be concerned that archade players are short-lived subscribers.  Historical players stay a lot longer.

At some point the attrition of subscribers might cause HTC to address the situation.

Oh wait TOD is on the way.

I'm willing to wait, but I frankly have my doubts about TOD.

Anyone old enough to think how silly it is for someone to need to tell a bunch of people on a BBS that he has finally grown up and is now too grown up to play a game with them anymore?

1988 my roomate was Damned Slider. I started out looking over his shoulder in amasment, then borrowed his account on occasion on Genie, and eventually got my own computer and account around AW2. Good old days. OK someone tell me which good old days are those good old days we are supposed to be missing? I'm confused............

I'm 50 and awfully derned growed up, but this game and the fun of it is what "you" make of it. Playing for just 4 years and now your too grown up for it...........hehehehehehehehe hehehe:rofl

Good lord and YUCCA is my squadmate and that 19 year old monster kicks my kester like back in the "good old days"............................. .......:rofl

I just love this game and the free entertainment I get on this BBS....:aok

Lotsa good posts on this thread!

I looked up when I started playing, tour 40, May 2003. LMAO! 65 hours that month, ranked 2589, k/d .29

Anyway, so it's been two years, still fun, I've only seen the game get better.

That's the thing about the "good old days"
memories are always shaped more by the way we want to remember them than by reality itself.

49 here. Since I started playing this I have pretty much quit playing other games. The Xbox gathers dust, the other PC games sit on the harddrive unused. I play just about every day, the other games I would play for a while and once I got through them I lost interest. In this virtual life you know who is gonna whine about not getting a check six call. You see the same people at a base doing what your doing. If somebodys calls for help you learn who really needs it versus the guy calling for for base defense while balling up a Corsair while trying to take off. It's the people. Some you ignore, some you squelch, some you pay attention to, because you learn about them, about the way they play. You know you can trust what they say. And playing this beats mowing the lawn any day!
