I slowly start to worry about this :(
The tensions are building up,we still dont have a clear view of the enemy.
Russia has said that they wont help with military support.
Taliban are now saying they will attack every neighbouring country that helps the US
Have we asked ourselves if this evil has thought about the aftermath of this in the same way they planned the vicious attack?
They have plenty information on how we proceed in history and what we do do find the responsibles etc.
What if this plan has been supported by all
major radical fanatics in states like iran iraq sudan lybia afghanistan etc.It seems the group is bigger than we ever expected from what is transpiring from media.
We cant just hit everyone even if all the states are responsible.
As civilezed nations we have a huge responsability how we solve this problem, but somehow i fear we are looking like a huge hammer that is looking down on lotsa ants but is not sure which to squash or how many.
With the days passing the international community will stand a huge test to stay
united and focused, and not loose itself in diplomatic and international law issues.
i just do really hope i am totally wrong

I think there is a great deal of 'talking up' of the whole thing.
For one, Russia has hinted it would allow the US to use its territory as a base of operations against certain states. Don't forget that the Taliban support the Chechnyan rebels.
Then you have the former SU republics who can be brought on-side.
The diplomatic effort is also in full swing - within 24 hours of Tuesday's attack there were talks with Pakistan over this. Also a high level diplomatic mission set off for Moscow yesterday, I believe.
So, basically it seems the US is tightening its hold around Afghanistan in particular using diplomacy, while preparing for the eventuality of military action.

besides agreein' with Dowding I am wondering if we are in that WW3 against terrorism for years.
The Drama we encountered just made it visible and Hopefully the see that it is about time to fight back.
And responses of especially russia i. e. makes me in a way hopefull, that finally the world sees where the real enemy of mankind is instead of fighting each other in a way stupid things from history.

War is big $$$ business, just like jailing people.
Land of the free, home of the brave has more people per capita locked in prisons than China.

yes we have way too many people in prisson over here, but thats a different thread for a different day

The Taliban in Afganistan has threatened the US if it attacks its people.
This demonstrates genuine stupidity and invites their destruction by providing a clear enemy.

Kneel your criminals down in a square and shoot them in the back of the head will keep the prison population down.

sorry eagler if you understood i was wimping out....i'll be there and willing to go harms way myself if needed to defend the freedom of our civilized society.
My worries go as the thread indicates to a global conflict and there i might start getting worried a bit.
With all the uncertainty and time flying by the region around afghanistan is turning into a boiling explosive mixture. There are already thousand of refugees at the pakistani borders.Pakistan said it would support the US while a big percentage of their population support the taliban regime that pronounced it will attack anyone that supports the US.
Now if the population in Pakistan revolts and lands a coup or sumething they have some nukes themselves...so then the scenario changes and we really gotta nuke em...what will the rest of neighbouring countries do?
So i'm whimping a bit because this is very troublesome on my FE
so i'll be glad to be part of the team that fires the first shot...but let it be conventional weapons please
again i hope my above scenario is totally wrong

i say.. legalize marijuana...put all the drug offenders in the military...and use the proceeds from legalized pot to fund a war on terrorism. in effect smoking the enemy into oblivion.

War is a distinct and real posssibility. It would be one sided though...in the short term. We would probably create quite a few Bin Ladens in the process, particularily it we handle it baddly.
Like EVERYONE is saying on BOTH sides of this argument, we need a real and throuogh investigation before we go to war. The possiblility does exist that the guys we are after were the suicidal pilots themselves and there isn't anything left to go after.
Still, the Taliban's responses are particularily stupid.

Is it possible, at the time being, looking only for culprits of 11th. Sept acts?
Will it be at the future?
If it is, will it be possible to take effective actions against them?
If they are, will we have the guts to execute them?
If we have, will be these actions accepted by radical muslims without their ouwn retaliation?
I think there is no doubt we are in WWIII since '70ies against terrorists. In their early stage, an undeclared, and instrumentalized in the cold war context one. Lately, declared on their side, unaccepted by western countries. From 11th, declared on both sides, but yet with extremely blur geografical references.
The real problem, the only one (from my point of view) is if this war can be limited to terrorists themselves. Their tactic is crystal clear: they are using first poor people's rage against US and blind faith to have cheap ammo against western countries. Second stage, they will attempt to unite muslims in general, and Arab countries in particular, against western countries. Heroism and military skills will be the facade, anger against retaliation over Afghan brothers will be the hook.
At this point, I think we should think: Is it really worth Afghan retaliation? Woudn't it be better to look for financial roots, and strike & retaliate there? I mean, let's put it bluntly, and only as a hypothetical situation: Suppose Irak (you could use any other country) is found supporting terrorists. What would you do? Blast Afghanistan, which has no target of military relevance, or take over Irak?. The risk of setting Middle East on flames is exactly the same, I think. The reward for military action bears little comparison. The warning given to cooperating countries will be loud and clear.
I think Afghan retaliation is something that has to be done. Especially after they declared Jihad on US and allies. But, does this have to be the first movement? Is it wise to strike there first?
Cheers,
Pepe
