Title: My weight loss
Post by: GRUNHERZ on July 08, 2005, 06:07:01 PM
Some of you may know that I have been focusing on losing weight recently.

Since October 18th last year, until today I have lost 110lbs.

Have gone from 330lbs to 220lbs today. In euro terms, from 150kg to 100kg.

Is anyone else doing this too?

I'm 6'2" and went from 240 to 190 a couple years ago. My target was 180, my bootcamp weight. I made it to 190 before bottoming out. Went back to 210. I feel better at 210 than I did at 190.

Thanks guys!

So far it's been pretty simple.

One, I had a damn good reason - a serious health scare. There is a funny story behind that too. :)

Two, I found a way to do it.

The way I did it was with diet changes and simple exercize - mostly walking. I eat 5 times a day, about 300 calories per meal. I always eat breakfast, then eat every three hours until my 5 meals or 1500 calories are spent. I drink 1/2 gallon of water a day.

Some of the most imporant changes to my diet came from eliminating full sugar sodas - or any source of calories from drinks, using PAM cooking spray, and watching calories to set schedule, especially the meals thing.

If you are smart you can make pretty big and tasty meals for only about 300 calories and yoiu can eat them 5 times a day.

I even go to Mcdonalds and In-N-out several times a week - just order the right things the right way.

One last thing, I reccomend that youi guys stay away from Atkins type diets - most of the weight loss there comes from dehydration and that type of diet does not help with cholesterol or many other problems related to high weight.

I actually am doing the same thing.  Sorta.

Not really dieting, but getting some good exercise.

When I started (almost 3 weeks ago), I could barely survive a half mile weak jog.

Now I can go about a mile and a half uphill most of the time on a strong jog before my body starts to give out.  The pain from a cramp on my right side of my stomach is just too much.  But I've recently started to work through it.

I do have a couple of questions.  I'd love to listen to music as I run, but I only have a CD player.  It does have one of those "Anti-shock" features, but will this hold up to jogging?

Also, is it easier to jog late at night?  Or early early in the morning?

I go to MickeyDs when I wish to have violent diarrhea. So I'm not so certain you want to be happy you eat that vile mess.

Same with Wendy's and BK - stay away if you are concerned about health. I worked at Wendy's, stay the **** away!!!

I dont eat Mcdonalds bugers. Their salads are pretty good though and have ben consistently fresh so far.

In-n-out burgers are always great though.

The point is therre are many ways to do this, even when you have no time but to use fast food places. :)

Hi Grunherz,

Congratulations on your success!

During seminary I began really packing on the pounds (we call it "Body by Berkhoff" [a theologian] and it comes from sitting around for hours reading and reading and reading while noshing on junk food.) A year after graduation I was pushing 220, so I went on the Atkins diet and cut it back to 180. Now I yo-yo between 180 and 190. Whenever I pass 190, I just cut out the carbs till I'm back to 180. Not healthy I know, but I just don't have the time or inclination for exercise anymore.

Reading and writing really will be the death of me. ;)

Here is the process the Atkins diet promotes in your body.

http://www.answers.com/topic/ketosis

But look, I'm not gonna waste too much effort in arguing against the Atkins diet. It's a marketing miracle because it tells American men exactly what they want to hear. It's hard to argfue against that.   :)

You see, Dr Atkins had a good point in his arguments against the overconsumption of higly processed carbohydrates such as sodas, sweets, and highly refined flours and I have integrated much of that in my diet changes.

But how that basic warning against eating too much junk sugar got turned into eat all the bacon you want and 3/4lbs cheeseburgers wrapped in lettuce being advertised as "diet" foods is a pretty sad story of the power of american marketing.

Kraft has jumped on the marketing with a complete line of "South Beach Diet" foods. Carb dieting is huge in sales.

Wendy's are good too. :)

One thing I noticed is that there tends to be differences in quality from one place to another though  mine have all been pretty good so far.  But I certaionly dont go to fast food places for great quality dining, I go there for the conveniance when time is short or when I'm on the roador whatever and I love that there are so many more healthy options recently.

Not to make an attempt to hijack this thread... First I'd like to Congrat GRUNZ!  WTG Bud.

Here's my prob.  I was once 5'6, now 5'4 Ostero sumpthing or nother. 2 back compression fractures, one upper back on spine just behind the heart, one lower back L4/L5, bad knees from the Army. I have Diabeties now, high blood pressure, bad cirrculation in legs which now has my ankles are a nice brown/black and I weigh 178 or so.  About the only way I can exercise is in my pool. I eat healthy...steamed Broccoli, tomatoes, bell peppers in the morning. Lite lunches and a good meal in the evening. I stay away from the starches..eat lean meats or fish and chicken and salads.

I just can't lose weight... I nibble my meals throughout the day... if I don't then I feel sick. I work in a very stressful job too. Try to get 6 to 8 hours of sleep a day. Oh and I smoke and drink.

So besides planning a "Fly By" for me in MA can anyone point me in the right direction?
:(

WTG GRUNZ!!!

For starters.. drop the late night meals. Eat the good stuff abit earlyer and light stuff in the evning (salads etc) try not to eat anything after 9 o'clock at all. take a stroll in the evnings.. just 20-30 mins  in a nice relaxed pace.

maybe, but thats not the brain i use the most ;)

anywho.. i sometimes get the urge to loose abit, and after just a couple of weeks doing the walks and cutting the late night snacks/foods i go down about 3-4 kg. The lighter you get tho the harder it is too loose more.

Problem is that i love eating nice things infront of the tv at night especially in the winter months so i usuall put on those extra kilos again but then i just start all over. I must say tho that i usually excersise also, but to loose the extra weight the things i mentioned is the only change i make.

If i didnt excersise on a regular basis i would be huge. I eat ALOT even if its fairly healty foods.

Mac, the hardest one, give up smoking.
Diabeties interferes with your cells getting the food/O2 it needs to function/survive. Smoking with its Carbon monoxide poisoning compounds that problem by making delivery of oxygen to your cells that much more difficult.
When I was in my doctor's office recently, I saw a chart (although a bit dated) that showed death from smoking was responsible for 400,000/year. I think it showed it was more than all the others combined.
Give up the smoking if you can. Your fight against Diebeties will go better for it.

1 gram of alcohol = 7 calories

For comparison,

1 gm protein = 4 calories
1 gm carbohydrate = 4 calories
1 gm fat = 9 calories

how many grams of alcohol in a bottle of 40% vodka?
Title: My weight loss
Post by: Urchin on July 09, 2005, 08:19:10 PM
I've read different things about the Atkins.  Basically the Atkins diet recommends cutting out all the carbs you eat, which puts you into a state of ketosis.  When you are in ketosis, your body burns "ketones" for energy instead of glucose (which it gets from carbs).  If you don't eat carbs, you get no Glucose, so instead your body takes the fat that is stored and turns it into "ketones" which are used for energy.  The atkins people think this is healthier than just ingesting the minimum amount of carbs needed to stay out of ketosis (but not more than that).  In the Governator's book, he recommends staying just out of ketosis, and testing for it to determine whether or not to cut back or eat more carbs, or stay the same.  AFAIK, this is the recommended method for most bodybuilders, and I don't see why it wouldn't work for everyone else.

Where Atkins people go wrong is protein and fat still have calories, and excess calories get converted to fat and stored.  So even if you are on the "atkins diet", if you are eating 3000 calories of fat and protein instead of 2000 calories of carbs and 1000 calories of fat and protein, unless you are 250 lbs of solid muscle already, you aren't going to lose any weight.

Best way to lose fat is diet and exercise...  best way to keep it off is to put on some muscle.  I don't care how much I weigh, I care what my fat percentage is.

40% means 40 grams per liter (about, depending if the percent is by weight or by volume).

So a 1 liter bottle has 2800 calories from alcohol (plus whatever calories from the other 60%, which for vodka is probably not much).

All you have to do is walk or run 28 miles and you’re even.

...and in addition, you stink.

I can always smell people on the Atkins diet. I usually make a point of asking, "Are you on the Atkins diet?"

They always ask how I know and I always tell them.

Exact from a strict thermodynamic point of view.

But a bit inexact if you take into account how our body assimilate those products.

The thing to remember is that some people (and I include myself in this up until 2003) eat an excess of carbohydrate. I had no idea that carbs and protein/fat eaten at the same meal could be so fattening. For two weeks, I eliminated pasta, potatoes, rice, bread and beer... and I lost about 15-20lb and had to tighten my belt by two notches. It wasn't so bad - I could eat 10oz steaks, but instead of having any sort of potato with it I would have extra salad or vegetable. When I saw the results, I never went back to cooking pasta at home, and have avoided potatoes and meat on the same plate ever since.

Beetle the reason that you lost that weight was a drastic reduction in calories eaten - not because of any special evil of carbohydrates.

You lose weight when calorie expenditure is greater than calorie intake consistently over a period of time. Really quite that simple. Even the officval Atkins menus recognize this as most of their eating plans give males about 1500 calories a day.

Grun,

With respect but why is losing weight interesting? It's kind of girlie isn't it? Or is Metro Man more PC these days. Just how much did you lose off your hips?

Eat less exercise more, lose weight. Pretty basic, yet millions of people can't understand that and keep a multi billion dollar diet industry laughing all the way to the bank..

How is it manly to weigh 150 kilograms when most of that is fat?

Your body needs Carbs in at least small quantity.  The Atkins diet is unsafe in the long run.

Diet Pop converts the "Aspartame"(sp?) into Wood Alcohol.  That is NOT A good thing either.

Well yes and no. I didn't feel I was cutting back; just eating differently. I could have lots of meat and even eggs. On two consecutive days in that two week period of Atkins, I had a full English breakfast - sausage, bacon, eggs etc. - and was still losing weight.

Masherbrum is right, and you can't completely eliminate carbs in the long term. And Atkins can be difficult to stick to, especially if you eat out. And it becomes tedious - so many meals of eating meat and salads.

Grunherz - do you have a picture of yourself that you are willing to post? Would be interesting to see!:)

Simliar thing from my perspective. Back in January I broke down and bought the books on "The Abs Diet". It was the first book on any weight loss subject I had ever read. I read through it three times just to make sure I understoof what it said and by golly it was exactly as all the nutrition course in my Exercise Science course work in college said.

Just eat smart and exercise...well being a former offensive linemen from college I have a hard time not eating 2800+ calories a day. Even 11 years after finishing playing football. The trouble is I can't run long distance; something I love to do; because of my right knee and having 5 surgeries on it including an ACL reconstruction and complete removal of all cartilage.

Well now I have been eating meals from the basics outlined in that book...mainly new recipe variations and cutting way back on the portions and I have gone from 285 - 265 since January. Its tougher for me when I am on the road for business because customers always want to go out drinking and I stopped drinking almost completely except when we have dinner parties at home and then its primarily Tequilla or Scotch...some habits die really hard. Anyway my ultimate goal is back down to 245 like I was when I played Tight End in college when I met my wife. If I don't get back there then I just want to be able to put on that old 34 inch pair of jeans in the waist and get back to a equal length leg and waist once again. A 40 inch waist and 34 length is a hard thing to find but plenty of 34/34 pants exist.

Oh and getting back in the weight room from my last trip down attempting pro-football has been a challenge mentally. I know I can do it but the only way I have ever lifted has been for size and strength and trying to modify that brainwave pattern is infinitely harder than trying to eat right. So I said screw it and went back to 225 reps for explosive power and legs press (no squats due to knee once again...)but damn I love the way squats used to make me feel after I had just finished a set of 10 at 550. Now its leg press 475 till I can't do it anymore. One super set twice a week on everything (Monday and Thursday) the rest of the week is what I call super resistance. I load the bar down on bench press with 475 and ease it down in fifteen second intervals and explode back up with spotters. 2 sets of five on that and your arms and chest feel live they are going to explode. On the leg press I load it down with 650 and do the same thing. Kind of the same feeling squats used to give but not the same. Then everything else is just hand held weight for all small muscle groups.
