Title: Question about LVT2s
Post by: Delirium on July 09, 2005, 12:37:22 PM
For a change, I've been catching one WWII flick a week from Netflix, this week it was 'The Sands of Iwo Jima'.

While watching it, I noticed (during the Betio raid) that they used LVTs but their LVTs had one .30 cal on each side. Not wanting to trust Hollywood, I've been doing some looking and one site states them as having 1 .50 and 3 .30 cals.

LVT2 (http://amtrac.org/5atst/lvt2.html)

The above site states all the guns used a 'skate mount' which I'm guessing would allow them to traverse 360 degrees in rotation.

Which is correct, AH, the movie, or the site listed above?

(edit: the above site wouldn't allow me to directly link the LVT pic)

I would guess that a variety of weapon sets were used. Maybe all three are correct.

You also had field expediency, it may not have been approved perhaps even frowned on by certain Rear Echelon types, but it wasn't thier butt that was on the line either......

Within any group or class there is variations and militaries being what they are you could have several classes/variation of the same vehicle within a unit and each with some minor or even major difference.

Sort of like having a 1952 M37 3/4 ton truck and having a 1953 model in the same unit, there are things on one that are absent or have not yet been installed (upgrading it to 1953 stds) which will usually happen during a refit.

It can be hard to say if Hollywood is right or wrong, since there is the chance of a limited production variant or field expedient being pressed into service.
