I thought they all just took a break for a year, you know, to tour europe and all.

Oh wait, that's high school students who don't want to go to college yet.

I'd call it a win/win scenario, but some of the Prima Donnas are going to cry.  Brett Hull comes to mind.

What I find more interesting than the upcoming soap opera when they get their paycuts, is the proposed rules changes that are being buried under all the hype of salary caps.  We could possibly see shootouts for tie breakers.  Thats something I've been hoping to see for years.

Hull's prima donna days are years behind him. He's not the player he used to be and hasn't been for some time.

Consider Forsberg. ;)

Dred, go watch it live. Hockey is difficult to watch on television.

I've been to a couple Stars games with good seats down on the glass. It's much better in person, but I'd rather see NASCAR.

Players got porked, not only are they not free agents until 31 years of age, they have a salary cap. So what if you are 26 and the team has spent most of it's cap money already?

But let's get to what is really killing hockey, like the zone trap. Olympic size rinks would put a stop to that real quick, and put the game back in the hands of the skill players and make it exciting again. Who wants to watch hockey the way it is played now? I think it sucks, I want to see the skill players skating up and down the ice making great plays.

Hmm... are "olympic size" larger or smaller?

If they're smaller, I doubt you'll see anyone skating end to end. Lots and lots of traffic.

Every year, the Kings play the Avalanche at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas for the last pre-season game. The rink is tiny and the play is congested.

Still fun to watch, but it's a different game.

Olympic size is much wider and longer.

This is coming from a Former fan (Vancouver Canucks) who took his wife to a Canucks game on their Honeymoon.   On top of the fact, that my Home Team I despise with a passion (Detroit Red wings).

<> the NHL.  Furthermore, <> Roenick you big sissy.

Yeah, Hull just sticks in my craw because of the whiny baby act he pulled to try to squeeze money out of St Louis.

I'll try and dig up the article, I cant remember where it was now.  I read awhile back that during the negotiations, that was one of the things someone had tossed on the table.  It wasnt too popular with owners because it would mean expensive reworking of alot of the current arenas.

You know, the whole concept of a salery cap ammuses me.

You have a group of very rich business men, organized in a group who are in competition with each other who have to write rules penalizing their employees because they can't control their spending and can't trust each other.

They didn't strike. They were locked out.

Roger that - both sides are to blame but I hold the owners more responsible for this whole ordeal.

Im thinking of suing for damages.  The lack of hockey last year forced me to watch lesser sporting events and Im suffering emotional trauma as a result.... plus I spilled really hot coffee on my lap.

So they are cutting the salary of the players?  Including the little known guys that no one evers pays attention to.  They probably still make at least $500,000 a year or so i'd think.  Take money from the GMs and all the other big wigs who are scared to let their precious money go.

And GO AVALANCHE!

Well, they are business men, they should know you have to spend money to make money.

I can understand where the owners are coming from, they would be losing seats, but what good are those seats if they are empty? The zone trap and tackle the man with the puck does not make for an exciting game.

Personally, I think alot of people would agree with you, and even welcome the change in size.  Especially the quality players.  I'd love to see that happen, to really show the difference between teams with talented guys and teams with thugs on skates.  Let some of the newer facilities get broken in, and some of the older ones start needing upgrades or replacements.  It will come up again.

This deal really is good for both sides.  While everyone has suffered (owners/players/fans) it's probably the "best" deal for all involved even though it came a year late.  Add in the opportunity it presents to make big rule changes and I think it'll be good for the game.

I don't think the larger ice surface would make that much difference, if you look at play on larger ice the style is still the same.  Even in world hockey tourneys you see the same trap/lock styles played well, how else does a team like Germany manage to keep pace with a real hockey powerhouse.  Most of the arenas could support larger ice (a good percentage of teams have arenas recently built or in the process of being negotiated/built) and those were typically made to support larger ice.

You wait and see how these rule changes may impact the game though.  If they follow-through with half of that has been talked about then you can expect some very high scoring games.  Smaller pads, less obstruction, no centerline, tag-up offsides, no-touch icing, etc.  Those are the likely additions.  It might mean some serious adjustment time for some teams/players as they are used to a decade of trap/lock hockey, but it should also let some talented guys put some pretty large point totals... maybe getting back to the year where some guys can put up 120+ points.  That hasn't happened in a number of years now.

I would hate to see hockey go the way of basketball. Basketball went the way of rule changes and, imo, ruined the game. First, moving the 3 point line in, then getting rid of the illegal defense. Between these two rules there is hardly any inside players anymore. Look at the Boston Celtics two years ago, they lived and died by the three pointer and even made the playoffs. Now instead of a hanfull of three pointers taken in a game, they are putting up 20-40 of them.

Whenever I watch hockey on a larger surface, I see alot more skating.

I love it, all those millionaires went on strike basically and said they would not play under a cap and they would not take pay cuts, lets see umm i believe the cap is right under 40 million and i believe its a 20 something percent paycut across the board for all players. I luv it, a bunch of rich millionaires having to take paycuts... NBA better watch out there next in line
